Would You drive or fly to San Fran?

There will be 5 of us. Would you drive or fly to San Francisco? We are planning to spend a couple of days with my Sister in Law in San Fran. We have never been there so we can't really judge the drive. It says around 6 hours on Mapquest, but I know traffic can add a lot of time. Is it better to just pay the $50 per person to fly?

If cost is not an object fly. If it is the coastal highway they are lying. I cannot see that drive taking 6 hours no matter what. I live in the San Francisco bay area and it takes us at least 7 hours for us inland.

I would drive and go on the PCH as that would be a great experience. I personally would drive for the views, but if you are just trying to get from point A to B with the least trouble $50 to fly would be worth it to me.

well, i would drive. i mean if your going to fly, your restricted to your flight. So like if you find out you won the mickey mouse penthouse, at least you can drive back another night instead of blowing off blah money to cancel your flight.

time is not really a factor... you still need to get there 2 hours, 1 hour of flight time + 1 hour delays and then wait for your shuttle or rental car, going through baggage. so much hassle.

FLY!!! We live in the Sacramento area (about the same distance as SF) and just flew to DL for the first time last week. WHAT A DIFFERENCE IT MADE!!! We've never minded the drive, I just never realized tense/exhausted it made us. Flying , even with 3 kids, a wheelchair and a mountain of luggage flying allowed us more time to enjoy our vacation and relax. We will definitely fly any chance we get.

I too live in Sacramento and avoid any driving I can in the bay area....flying would be so much easier unless you're wanting to drive along the coast.

Yes FLY..we live north of SF (fly out of Oakland or Sacramento) and it is sooo much easier..even with kids!! The drive is long..and yes add traffic and it takes longer

It would be less stressful to fly, however time wise it won't be much different. We flew down in 2005, otherwise we always drive. It will take you about 7 hours though to drive. It just depends on your preference and if you have that money to pay for airfare since driving is MUCH cheaper....

Fly. It might be the 6 hours to drive on the Interstate 5 (we used to do the route many times from LA to SF in 5 so an extra hour sounds about right). However, the I-5 is not a relaxing drive. It has 2 lanes in both directions of often compacted traffic driving at extremely high speeds.

Now if you had the time to do the coastal route (10- 10 and half hours from Anaheim to SF, but you'd want to make stops), I would recommend the drive.

We lug so much stuff around, I can't imagine trying to check in and dealing with the airport hassle.

We did this drive last year at about this same time. We took I5 and the drive around six hours. We pulled off the 5 at exit #403A-B that took us to over the mountain, past a beautiful reservoir (San Luis) and into Gilroy. From there we took the 101 through San Jose and in to San Francisco. The worst part of the drive was from Anahiem to around Santa Clarita because of traffic. We took off from the DLH around 6:30am and arrived in SF around 2 pm, but that includes a few stops here and there for breakfast and lunch. We would do it again. Have a great time whichever way you decide to go!

I would fly. I hate being stuck in the car on long trips and I always feel like it's taking forever. Flying is so much easier!

It is NOT 6 hours, more like 10 with traffic both getting out of LA and getting into SF. If money is no object FLY!!

I live in San Jose so I go to SF all the time. Even driving from SJ-SF takes a long time. See SF like LA its the traffic in the city that will kill ya.

Fly!!!

We've never driven in all the times I've gone down there. I just want to get there and not worry about the hassles and exhaustion from driving.
