Would You do This in a Restaurant?

Nope, I would never sit down at a dirty table when there were numerous clean ones. Even if I had a favorite table. I would rather see three unbussed tables in a restaurant than some of the nasty bathrooms I've come across.

If I walk into a restaurant and there is nobody there, and 3 dirty tables, you bet I'll sit a dirty one....and if your rude and ask me to sit somewhere else, you wont find even a penny on the table. I am NOT the type of person who tips just because a waiter relies on tips. NOT IN THE LEAST! If your service is crappy, so is your tip. I have walked out of many restaraunts without leaving a tip, and I've also walked out of many with a $30.00 bill, and left $10.00 if the server was great.

What reason would you possibly have for doing that?

Sorry, but it's not the customer's restaurant. The workers are in charge. If a table or a section is closed, it's not an option. And how stupid to make your server mad... do you know what they can do to your food? Not to mention that they can make you wait as long as they want to. Is it your goal to have a nice argument with dinner? What's the point?

I do agree that it would look much better for the restaurant to not leave the tables dirty.

I've worked in retail management (and personnel) off and on for 20 years, and the same laws that apply to most other establishments do not apply to restaurants. Heck, most people don't realize that minimum wage for servers is 2.37 an hour.

What may be considered a break is the 5 minutes your three tables all had food on their table and 'didn't need anything'. However, you have ice to fill, silverware to wrap, bread to get from the back to put in the bread warmer, etc...I stand by what I said. The next time you're in a restaurant, ask your server if they get a 'clock out and really sit down' break. You'll be surprised. One of the places I worked for tried to do it, but unless you worked a double, you didn't get it.

It's funny that you should mention Outback, because that's the steakhouse I worked for for 9 months...no breaks, unless you count 5 minutes here or there. The thing that saved me there was that I was a nursing mom, and when I would get the occasional 5 minutes to pump (another server would check my tables) I would also make sure I got a loaf of the honey bread. There were many nights were I didn't even get the time to pump and the idea of a 30 minute break was laughable. I was the one server who was praying to be 'triple sat' so that I could get everyone's food out and have those five minutes to pump.

I'm glad that Friendly's supports the labor laws, but I find that they do run their establishments more like the fast food restaurants do in terms of breaks and coverage.

Do really think that we get breaks in a restaurants then must not not have work in a restaurants than. I did good if I could to the bathroom. Just be able to take 5 minutes to eat was heaven. I think did good kid. Don't feel bad some customers just like to give people a hard time you can not make them happy.

The only point I agree with is that it probably would have been better - if possible - for you two to switch off break times vs. eating together. But I know how it is in restaurants, sometimes if you don't take advantage of that "lull," you won't get another one until the place closes!

Other than that, ITA with you that those people were rude and ridiculous, and I don't blame you one iota for "taking your time" getting back to them. Cripes.

Never do that, unless it's a matter of the staff have been so run off their feet & not had time to clean the tables.

But, if there was that many clean tables, you have to wonder why they would wish to sit at a dirty one.

I have waitressed at Friendly's, Spinnakers, Ruby Tuesday's (worst place ever), and Chili's..in Ohio, DC and Philly. Let me say, it was rare that we ever got a break.

One time at Chili's in Ohio..I was exhausted, I had opened, paid for my lunch ate it on my feet in 5 minutes, and closed that night. The second shift, it was a Sat night and I was in the smoking section. I got slammed..twice! All 6 tables got sat at 7 then again at 9 all 6 tables. So a younger couple (they were like 24 ..I was 19) asked for the smoking section at 10:30. Well, I had one table cleaned. So they were sat..but they complained. They were disgusted to sit around all the tables with dirty dishes on them.

The manager (who had been sitting down at a table for 3 hours with his friends at the bar)..was no help at all.) So they complained and finally, he came over and yelled at me. I was sooo angry, my body was physically exhausted it was 10:30 at night...I was sooo close to tears I could feel myself using every ounce of energy I had left to hold it in.

I politely told the customers that I had gotten slammed and that I was sorry. They didnt stay..and I was fine with that. I was there until 1am that night becuase on top of having to clean my section..the girl who had salad dressings was allergic, so I did it..which takes forever.

The point of this is...every waitress goes through nights and days like that. At the verge of their breaking point and all it takes is one bad customer to push you over the edge. So to choose a table looking to start a fight, just remember...do people go to your work place interrupt your lunch and expect you to work on their needs?

Maybe they should have taken seperate breaks, but they do deserve breaks and when you go in looking to start trouble..that is all you are going to find. Then who walks away satisfied or happy?

Thank you, Disneymommie!! :)

I just want to make a couple other comments. The restaurant where I work is a very old-fashioned family type restaurant, nothing up-scale, not a chain, etc. It's a 2-room restaurant that seats about 100 people, and has an old-fashioned counter/bar with swivel seats. It's in a very small town (population about 300!) but people drive for miles and miles to eat there. People who live in Lansing, our state capitol, will drive the 40 miles up just to eat there. Our menu stays the same, always. You know what you're going to get, it's very, very consistent (rare turnover of cooks and waitresses) and very well-run. People love the place.

The carpet in the lobby needs replacing, the bathrooms could use up-dating (they are not even handicapped accessible), etc. but it's clean and the food is wonderful, all home-made, from scratch.

We are extremely busy on weekends, and most of the rest of the week is quite respectable (except for this month, s-l-o-w). We do close at 4:00 on Sunday (open at 7:00 a.m.) and 90% of our customers know this. The owner knows we usually sit down at 3:00 to eat and she's fine with that. We all (owner and her husband, and the three waitresses) sit down together usually on Friday and Saturday nights, but sometimes not until after closing but still have people in the restaurant so we are always hopping up and down to take care of them.

We had cleared all of the tables BEFORE we sat down this past Sunday at 3:00. But while we were in the process of getting our food three other tables left. Rather than let our food get cold to clear them (taking care of our customers is another thing, we are more than happy to keep hopping up and down to do drink refills, remove dirty plates, get dessert, etc.) we always wait until we're finished. It takes us about 10-15 minutes to eat, so it's not THAT LONG of a break, really, and like I said we're up and down every couple of minutes checking on customers but we don't feel it's necessary (and our boss feels the same way, or she wouldn't allow us to do it) to leave our food to get cold to clear a couple of tables (plates are cleared steadily as the customers eat, but the glasses, coffee cups, napkins, silverware, butter wrappers, etc. are still on the table) while we eat, since there are many, many CLEAN tables for customers to choose. 99% of our customers will not sit at a dirty table, and it just annoyed me that these people chose a dirty table and refused to move when I asked them. And no, they didn't want to sit there because of the "view", there was no window for them to see out of, and we don't have booths, they are ALL tables.

Like someone else said, the employees run the restaurant, not the customers. Most restaurants have a hostess who seats people and they do not get a choice in which table to sit at, especially if a whole section is "closed" for one reason or another. (I have worked the breakfast shift, and usually "close" the second section until the second waitress comes in so I don't have to keep an eye on both rooms and I've had people ask to sit in the other room and I just tell them "sorry, it's closed.")
We had the "please seat yourself" sign out, since our hostess had left, but had I known these people would be a pain in the *** I would have seated them myself so they wouldn't have sat at the dirty table.

But like I said, I enjoy my job MOST of the time, and we have many wonderful "repeater" customers that I love waiting on, but there is the occasional customer that I don't particularly enjoy. :)
Oh, yes, they did leave a tip. I was surprised!! ;) I mean, I wasn't rude to them. I smiled, refilled their water glasses, took away dirty plates, asked if they wanted dessert, etc. I just "took my time" getting to them after they refused to move. :sunny:

Nope. I would go to another table with a restaurant full of clean tables.

I have found that if you treat people with a little consideration they usually treat you well back. If you act like a jerk it usually comes back at you. The last person I want to piss off is someone handling my dinner.;)

I don't blame you. I know how it feels to be exhausted (and hungry) after a long wait shift. It has been 20+ years since I have been a waitress, but my DD17 works at Ruby's and I have to say the breaks are non-existant if it is busy. She has come home many times after a 6-7 hour shift "starving" and didn't get even a 5 minute break. I said "it is the law, they have to give you a lunch break" and she simply said "you don't understand mom, when every table is filled and the place is super busy, there is no way anyone could say - oh, I am taking a break now". Now on slower week days she will get her 15 minute break. Big Wow. But I guess this is very common, even though they know they are breaking the laws. Don't let it get you down, it sounds like you do an excellent job. And to the poster who said servers make $2.68 per hour, what state is that? Here in CA the minimum wage is $6.75 per hour and that includes servers and/or anyone who recieves tips. They make pretty darn good money when you add it all up!

The wages vary widely from state to state. I know that it's very low in Texas.

I personally wouldn't be bothered by a few dirty tables. I would simply seat myself at a clean table and enjoy my meal.

Lulubelle, Maryland and New York have that as the server's rate. I know I had been looking to transfer to a location in Virginia with the second restaurant and they were also 2.37, but Virginia was toying with making minimum for servers 5.50. That was almost 4 years ago, and I don't know that it happened. Federal minimum is 2.37, but each state can change that to a higher amount, they just can't lower it.

I would of saod in a nice way " Fine clean it off and I will get you water as soon as you are done and seated. :D

A very successful store in our area has operated on the following policy, one that would work in any business, especially the restaurant business:

Our Policy
Rule #1. The Customer is Always Right.

Rule #2. If the Customer is Ever Wrong, Re-Read Rule #1

It is odd that someone would pick a dirty table (and odd that there were dirty tables if things were slow) but they are the customer and they should be made happy. You mention that people come to this restaurant out of habit and because they know things will be "the same". Well, it's possible that part of that sameness for these folks is sitting at that table.
