Except for the fact that the people who owned the house didn't return the stove! That makes it different for me. I would be concerned as to why someone returned the stove after cooking in it. If it was merely missing a piece of trim, why wouldn't they just get that piece replaced from the manufacturer? Especially if they had already gone to the trouble of installing it and cooking with it before noticing it? (I'm assuming if they had noticed it when it came out of the box, that they would probably have sent it back before it was installed or at least used?) The trim story sounds a little iffy to me.
As a person who has been a seller on Ebay for a long time, I have first hand experience with how really strange people are. And there are a lot of people who are just not very honest. It doesn't surprise me at all that someone would return a stove over trim or use it as an excuse to return a stove after using it.
