Would you buy a new dryer to match a new washing machine?

Personally, I wouldn't do it, but I wouldn't fault you if you did. Different things bother different people, and if it makes you happy to have your w/d match, and you can afford it, don't worry about what anybody else thinks! :thumbsup2

I noted in the Budget folder that my washing machine stopped working. The machine was eight and a half years old, and the cost to repair was over $500. I have opted to replace the old washer. That means the replacement washer will not match the old dryer which was purchased at the same time as the old washer.

The old washer was a high efficiency toploader. We opted for a red front-loader washer on a pedestal. The old dryer is a black, traditional design, traditional height machine. It still performs as well as when it was brand new.

This is definitely not a budget question. What would you do in my shoes? Would you get a new dryer and pedestal, matching the new washer, or would you keep the old dryer until it is no longer useful?

Sell the old one on Craigslist, (they go like hotcakes), and you can recoup some $ and apply it toward the new one.:thumbsup2

since you mentioned it not a money issue .. i would definitely get the matching set..... i think it would bother me if it was not...

I guess it really is a personal decision. We got a front loader with pedestal couple years ago but kept the old dryer. I just couldn't justify spending money on new dryer when old one works fine. Now if it bits the dust yes we will get a matching one as I love our Samsung washer. Does the mismatching bother you? Also look into if a newer dryer would be more efficent as your old one too. Our washer and dryer are out in garage so no one but us sees it.

Yes so true. Life is too short. Do what makes ya happy!

I just did this last month. My 12 year-old washing machine died, and even though the matching dryer was still working, we replaced both of them.

Our reasoning was:
(a) it was just a matter of time before the dryer kicked the bucket, so why not just save time and energy and have both done at once;
(b) we would save on a second delivery charge having them both delivered at the same time; and
(c) our washer and dryer are located in our kitchen, so it was important (to us) that they matched each other, as well as the other appliances in the room.

Okay, I confess. I already made the decision and delivery will take place later today.

Free delivery was available this week. DH could have picked up and installed appliances himself, but he's been working odd hours and may be working on Saturday, so delivery was a plus.

We wanted matching appliances, and once DH insisted on a pedestal for the new front-loading washing machine, I decided to prop up the dryer too. So a new washer, a new dryer, and two pedestals will be delivered and installed.

We may sell the old dryer to recoup some of this extravagance. DS has gotten something free through Craigslist before, but we've never sold anything that way.

I bought a new front loader two years ago but did not buy a new dryer. They are both white Maytags, though. Since yours are so different in color, I would spend the money to buy a new one. Sell the other one on Craigslist for to recoup some of your money.

I would and have.

I don't remember if it was the washer or dryer that had gone out (they were an older model that came with the house when we bought it) but when one died we decided to update both of them to a new matching set at the same time.

Well, there you go. My sister just sold her POS dryer for 50 bucks.

My MIL got a used set on CL for a couple hundred and then my dh turns around, sells her old set recoups half the cost.

They sell quickly. Craigslist is a "garage sale". Basically you can sell a good working dryer without effort. Whoever says they will buy and pick it that day you sell too.

If they hem or haw you go to the next person. Good Luck!:thumbsup2

Depends.

Sometimes stores will have deals running where buying the set is not much more than buying only one. In that case I would buy the set and sell the old one.

If it would cost a large amount to get both I would stick with the dryer that works and have an unmatched set.

If my washer and dryer were in a visible area, I would get the new dryer. Mine aren't, so I just replace them as they go out.
