Would you book for this?

Ok, so this may be long and I apologize in advance, but thank you for reading!!

DH and I have been married (almost) 5 months, and he has quickly adopted my Disney addiction. (We went for our honeymoon.) Well, for nearly 3 years, I've been saving pennies (literally, plus any extra $$ out of checks that I could afford) to take my parents on a trip. Originally, I was planning on taking them to DL as we've been to WDW nearly 20 times but never DL. Thankfully, DH was all on-board with this mission to save to take my parents. (They've done a lot for both of us, and my mom has had breast cancer twice. She's our hero and someone we both want to do something special for.)

So, here's why I'm hesitating. Mom has mentioned over the past year she'd really like to go to DL but how they can't afford it now. Well, we're still almost $2k away from being able to afford DL. Airfare and hotel is going to run us a lot more than this new WDW package.

Basically, we were looking at nearly $5k for DL (high airfare from where we live, two hotel rooms, transportation, food, etc.) But, with this new promo, here's what I figured out we could get:

2 rooms at Pop (7 nights) and Park Hopper upgrades (7 day tickets) - 1892.00
Airfare - $800.00 (total, for all of us)

Plus, since we're booking two rooms, we'll get 2 $200.00 giftcards to put towards food.

This trip is literally going to cost us half of what we'd pay going to DL, and mom has been saying she is really ready for a trip. (It's been a rough year.)

If you were me, would you book the WDW trip and just promise DL later down the road or keep on saving? (If we keep saving, we'll be lucky to go by the end of next year.)

Also, I know WDW normally does free dining in the fall, and I'm a frugal shopper, so there's that part of me that's wondering if that would be a better deal. But again, my mom would have to keep waiting. (She has no idea about this; if we book WDW, we'll surprise them at Christmas.)

What do you all think??

I know you want it to be a surprise but why not talk to your mom about it. I would think she would take WDW now over DL later if her year has been that bad. I know how scary cancer is and how stressed out it can be. I decided to take my son to Disney for the first time when I was first diagnosed. Decided to stop putting things off until later because later just might not be there. I am fine now except for this darn Disney addiction I seem to have. Talk to your mom and let her decide.

If it were me in that situation I would go with WDW, because
1) I like WDW better. (Nothing against DL. Just personally partial to WDW.)
2) Go for today and while the health is there. (DH's sister battled cancer for years. We have seen the physical and emotional ups and downs.)
3) $ave and still have a great time together. Being together is what is all about anyway, right?

Just a side note. I was told that the $200 gift cards could not be used for food. Only for souvenir types of things.

Good luck on your decision. You are a sweet person to do this for your mom.

Ditto!!!

I think you are very sweet to do something for your mom. The wdw deal sounds like a great option for your family. If she is anything like my mom (who had breast cancer 4 years), she will love anything you do or plan for her. Good Luck in your decsion and let us know what the outcome is.

I know from gift card usage in the park from the one I loaded up for our trip in May I could use it at food kiosks as long as they had a way to swipe it.

So I don't think they will forbid someone from using it to pay for a meal. I think you just can't use it to pay for a meal Plan like Deluxe Dining Plan or Basic Dining plan since those have to be paid for before you get the Gift Card.

Now with the OP's Question: I'd go with WDW now, and see what you can pull of later for DL if you still feel the need to go. But enjoy today while you have it!

The last time my family went, we were given a gift card as an early Christmas gift and used it to pay for meals, so I'm going to assume it's the same type of card. And, DH and I just went on our honeymoon this past June and used a honeymoon gift card. I'll probably call to verify this though before we rely on it for meals.

BUT! I'm 99.9% sure we're going for it!!!! I'm so excited! Except, I've always been the planner and give myself the whole 180 days out to make ADRs, and we're looking at leaving on January 31. EEK!

I asked this in another post, but no one has replied. Does anyone know how long you have to do the deposit if you book on line? I know via phone, they give you 7 days, but we were wanting to book online tonight when DH gets home from work. We've got the money to pay for the entire trip, but it's in my savings account and I can't make it to the bank to transfer until Thursday. (We never put DH on this account; we're newlyweds, but have just been using this account to save for our trip and figured it'd be fine if I just handled it.)

So, does anyone know about the deposit time line?? I want to get booked now so we don't miss the resort that we can afford!!

Online you have to pay the deposit at the time of booking. What I would do Is call Disney now on the phone, make the reservation and tell them you need to call back with the deposit but want to put it on courtsey hold. Then when you can put the deposit down or pay for it do so online if you choose or call and do so over the phone.

This way you don't miss out on the hotel you want and you'll have time to make the payment.

Otherwise you'd have to pay the deposit at the time of booking if done so Online

I'm going to call when DH gets home tonight then. The thing is, when I priced it on the phone the other night, the TA told me Pop was gone. But, I've easily pulled it up on the internet for less than he was quoting me any of the other All Star resorts.

Hopefully, the TA I get tonight will be able to come up with the same numbers that I've gotten online!

Have the information on the screen in front of you when you call, if they say sorry not available tell them its available online are they sure its not available. If they insist its not thank them for their time, hang up and call right back, chances are the next person might be able to book it.

I had the issue when I wanted to book my package, told the agent I wanted 1 day tickets (i'm an ap holder) and they told me it wasn't allowed. I hung up called right back and the 2nd agent had no issue booking me a 1 day ticket with the 4/3 special.

Great!! Wish me luck! If we get everything booked, I'll promise to do a Pre-Trippie!!!:woohoo:

Good Luck my fingers are crossed for you! I'll be looking for the pre trip! I started one for our trip last time and no one responded :(

Just asking can't you book it online & give the deposit or do they want it all now? :confused3

Nothing to add really. Just wanted to say I just booked Pop yesterday and we are also arriving on January 31st.:cool1:

From what you've said about the year your mom has had I kind of think she'll be thrilled with WDW instead of DL!!

And this is something that you and your DH will never regret.

My mom had been sick for several years and was on oxygen 24/7. We knew she wanted to go to WDW but she also knew that we really couldn't afford it. But DH and I wanted to take her to WDW and we saved and were able to take her for a few days and stayed in the Contemporary. Even though she wasn't in the best of health and was on oxygen, she enjoyed every minute of the trip! We have never regretted having spent the money on that trip and when she did pass away (in 1990) we knew that we had made one of her last wishes come true!

You are a very special person for wanting to do this and you are lucky to have a DH that agrees with you (as mine did)! :lovestruc

Good luck with your reservations!!
