Would you bid on a room only?

Hi-I am leading an auction at our work to benefit kids this coming Christmas. I plan on donating enough points for 3 nights in a studio for the auction. I was hoping that I would be able to spring for a couple of adult 2 day tickets out of pocket or with cash donations to help find items for our auction. It doesn't look like either is going to happen. So, if you were a nonDVCer (you don't know the value) would you bid an a "room only" item? I plan on making a basket and having a few Disney Store gadgets in it also to make it look good. I am worried that it won't sell since someone will have to buy tickets. The average salary is $50K with about 300 employees. So I have an audience (Ithink). Do you think I should make up the item anyway? What would you suggest for a min., bid? Maybe I can throw in some water park tickets since they will be cheaper. Please help! Thanks!

Are you limiting it to weekday nights, or can it be for the more point costly weekend nights?

If you have a valid charity tax ID # call WDW and see if they will donate the tickets. I bid on 4 last night at a chinese auction that were donated to our PTA (I didn't win)....

But I would bid on room only too Start at a dollar and then let it get crazy. Make sure they know it is deluxe accomodations Have pictures of all the resorts they can chose from or many of you home resort. I would definitely bid

I think explaining EXACTLY where and what they get and how much $ it cost to pay cash through Disney would help. I think some people might have the mentality " what's the catch ?" if it's not laid out for them .

Thanks for the replies. I am going to limit it to Sun-Thur. I will call with our Tax ID# to see if I can get a ticket donation. Thanks for the advice! I had looked on Disney's site but could only find info about how their employees wne tout and di charity items in the community.

Just remember that the use of DVC units is not tax deductible. I can tell you that I've participated in quite a few silent auctions, on both sides, and Disney is pretty good about donations if you give them enough time (read months). I think if you spell out the value and specifics, you are likely to get a fair amount of interest. I'd set a reasonable minimum bid and you may want to go in with the idea you'll buy it back if it doesn't reach a certain level.

Yes, that was me. It was listed in the auction as a "Three Nights in a Florida Studio" rather than, calling out that was in fact, deluxe accomodations on site at WDW.

Rather than one of the featured items, it was lumped together with the rather ordinary. I felt it could have been promoted better.

My advice is to make sure the auction organizers understand what you are donating and list it correctly.

I donated 5 nights in an OKW studio for February school break (crowded week) for a fund raiser we had for my brother when he was battling a brain tumor. We had many great donations to raffle off, a Bostone sports pack, which is 4 tickets to each of the Boston sports team, 2 motorized scooters, a weekend bed and breakfast on cape cod. a full spa treatment, ect.

The entire room was lined up at the Disney table. The bucket was over flowing with tickets for that raffle (we kept everything seperate, so they bought a chance on what they wanted). Hands down, my DVC room brought in the most money for my brother and his wife.

No doubt about it, it will be a money maker!

ETA: I was the MC for the actual drawings, and to pull the name out of the bucket, when every person in the room was ready to jump out of their seat in excitement, and to pull a winner! It was AWESOME, to be able to give someone, a person there to support my brother, a trip to Disney.

Disney1fan2002-I am glad to hear that it went so well and you gave me another idea. My DH promised my football tickets to our local Big Ten college but then we he found out I wanted to give a DVC stay also he thought I was being a bit too generous. However, maybe I can have a raffle later for the DVC trip. I am heading up all of the events so it wouldn't be a problem to change. This way, it will look like I am asking DH to donate for more than one event!
