We exchange family gifts with siblings. I had a moment of brilliance this morning regarding dh's sister and her family (preteens). When I mentioned it to dh, he didn't "get" how that is for the whole family. I think our kids would LOVE it, but I'll get their opinions when they get home from school.

The idea - one of those waffle makers that flips - like they have in the hotels. I saw them at Costco for less than $60. I see it as kind of a novelty, but something they could all actually use since the kids are old enough to get their own breakfasts.

What do you think?

I think it is a great idea...

A waffle maker with a couple of IPODS in it, I wish I would have thought of it.

Eh, not so much a family gift. Though my kids are little and could care less about a waffle maker. A popcorn popper would be better IMO. Maybe with separate popcorn bowls and seasonings.

Hmmm, I don't think my kids would be too thrilled--even if they are old enough to make breakfast, its not something they choose to do. The novelty would wear off pretty quickly.

I think you have a good heart, however if I was a teenager, i wouldn't eally think of it as a gift for me.

I do love the idea of a family gift, but it is hard to find something for the whole family to appreciate.

Sigh. I asked my kids and they were pretty ho-hum. So much for my idea! I thought they'd love it because they always make their own waffles when we stay at a hotel. They also complain that they get tired of cereal, toast, etc.

Mine has been sitting in our pantry for 4 years. My dh probably has dragged it out twice.

Nice gesture, but I guess that is why waffles are special when you go on vacation.

I've thought of buying that. My kids love making their own waffles when we go on vacation. The reason I didn't buy it is that that is part of what makes vacation so special. Same with one of those spin art machines. If they have those available, then they won't be so special on vacations or visits to amusement parks.

my friend gave us a family gift that we really enjoyed. My kids loved it as much as me. She bought a kit from Aunt Annnies pretzels at the mall, which you take home to make your own pretzels. We has so much fun making these of cause mine looked like mickey. LOL They also tasted very good.:)

my girls (11 & 15) love our stovetop crank popcorn machine and would love seasonings and special bowls for our 3x weekly popcorn snack.

We all love cooking, so my whole family would adore it. You know the family, so only you can decide if it be a right gift for them. =)

I'll give you the perspective of a 17 y.o. Personally, I wouldn't like it at all. But of course I hate cooking and I'm not a breakfast person. If those kids enjoy cooking and stuff, then go for it. If not, I say pass on it. I like the popcorn maker idea waaaay better. Another idea would be for you to do like a "movie night" basket. Maybe get a cute container/basket, different kinds of movie theater candy, a gift card to a video rental place or the movie theaters, and anything else like that you may think of.

Thanks for all the responses and ideas.

Popcorn isn't an option right now due to braces.

I love the pretzel idea. I wish they were a few years younger because combining that kit with the children's book on the website would have worked really well for a home schooling family.

We've done the movies idea - always a good one.

Family gifts do get harder as the kids get older.

We got a family gift when I was younger. What a disappointment when we opened that nice big box and there was a bread machine in it.

My kids would love it and so would we. I KNOW because we got a waffle maker as a family gift 2 years ago and they were all really happy.

Personally I would love it! We love to cook and we make a big breakfast every weekend. My kids are young (8 & 3) they love breakfast, so they would be excited about it.

"No" to the wafflemaker.

I vote for a family board game....."BLOKUS".

It's $30.00 at Target & definitely a "hit" with my family (DD13 & DS9).

There's a website, if you'd like to check it out. www.blokus.com

We got a waffle maker for a family gift a few years ago and my family loves it!

I definitely think a waffle maker is a great family gift. Nothing like a family breakfast on a Sunday morning to bring everyone together.
We also use it when my brother or sister has friends spend the night to make a big breakfast the next morning.
