Would u fix it if they not under warrenty or buy new??

we have a LG refrigerator (ss french door/freezer on the bottom) that is just over 1.5 yrs old. It has died. The motor or fan has been really loud the last few days. We leveled it off and vacuumed behind and under it. the noise goes away when we open the french doors. We have tried unplugging it too. The noise eventually returns. Today the temp controls stopped working on the refrigerator side and the freezer side automatically bumped up to 6/7. Normally at 4 for both sides.

I emptied the freezer into our extra freezer in the basement. The refrigerator stuff is out on our unheated enclosed porch-- most likely will freeze by morning since we will be under 20 tonight. I put the milk and juice in the freezer part bc that is still cold.

I contacted LG today - It is out of warrenty by 7 months. since I purchased it at Sears they connected me with sears, Sears wanted to send out their tech since it not under warrenty. I said no thanks and called LG back. I asked for help trouble shooting. The rep says the noise is from ice forming in the walls of the refrigerator-- cause poor seals or doors not closed all the way. Neither is the case. I read that it is common for LG's to do this. I explained that the temp controls were not working properly too. He didn't have a cause for that other than a 'board' needs to get replace. I told him I was upset bc it is relatively new-- I expected it to last 8 yrs or soo. He said if I fax the sales receipt in, management will reveiw it and see if they can extend the warrenty. I fax it in already but it takes 48 hrs to get an answer. He was understanding to the fact that being w/o a refrig is a huge deal esp w/ 4 dc.

If it is covered under warrenty I will get it repaired by their techs. Now if they won't cover it -- should I repair it or should I buy a new one??

We purchased it for $850 at Sears outlet. Reg price is around $1200. Add in tax,removal of the old one and delivery it came just under $1000. I hesitate to repair in fear that this will occur again in a few years. Service charge just to check the refrig is $100 from the company we used before for other appliances. that company says that LG takes a while to get parts out too. so that may also play a part in what to do.

Would u start window shopping now for another one in the event it isn't covered??

We had a refrigerator die after 4 years and found it very easy to repair. You can find many appliance forums to help you. Type in your make and model number and see what comes up. Usually the same things always seem to go wrong with certain models. I have found this to be true with all major appliances. We have fixed washers, dryers and ovens for ourselves and relatives very inexpensively. We just fixed my inlaws stove and washer for about 20 bucks each by just doing some research. I always do the research and husband does the actual repair. It ended up being the motherboard on our refrigerator and it only cost us 60 bucks to fix and that included the overnight shipping. I guess you have to be handy in testing parts and taking them apart though. Fixya.com and appliancepartspros.com are a few of the sites I use.

Our timer went on ours and the ice built up. replaced the timer and no other issues. Well lets say until dh decided to use an ice pick to clear the ice build up....whole other story

The general rule that I use is that if it costs more than half the cost of a new unit to repair the old unit I replace. Since your replacement cost on this will probably be $1000 or more I would look a repairing as the best course of action.

When you purchased this fridge did you use a credit card for the purchase ? Some cards offer extra warranty coverage as a benefit. The ones that do this will usually double the manufacturers warranty on the product for up to an additional year. Hope this helps.

Maybe check locally for an appliance repair person. I had a washer with issues and DH knew what it was but not able to fix it (for once ) We called a local guy and it cost $50 for him to come look at it and fix it! WELL worth it I thought. I know if we'd called Sears it's more than that for them to just show up, then to look at it and then to fix it!

I have not heard great stories about anyone needing to have an LG appliance repaired. One of the problems is getting parts. At least in our area - it is almost impossible to get one repaired in a timely manner.

Sounds just like our problem. It was the fan not running. I called a repair man and for under 100.00 the fan was replaced and it has run fine for another 5 years and still working fine. It turned out the fan had stopped and so the coldness was not getting cirulated. I would surely check with a repair man he will know if it is better to get fixed.

Sounds like our problem last year. Ours was 4 years old and did the same thing. We had a repairman replace the fan for unter $200. The guy said they go out all the time and are the #1 reason for people to buy new ones. He showed dh how to do it and if it goes out again we'll go buy the $40 fan and replace it ourselves. Hope yours is the same easy fix!!

You'd be amazed to find instructions and videos on the internet of how to fix just about anything. I learned how to do my own boat engine repairs by searching youtube videos.

Did you by any chance pay for the fridge with a credit card? Some credit cards extend your warranty for a year or more. Check your credit card agreement or call the bank to see if you have this credit card feature and you charged the purchase.

Sorry to hear about your fridge. Have you tried servicemagic.com. once you post your issue, you will be a phone call within 30 mins. They may diagonise it for $50. And, repair may be extra. Also, look up in youtube.com for detail repair.
