Would this bother you and would you go?

I work for a company with about, oh 18 people in the office. There are 2 buildings. The "main" building where everyone is and then about 100 yards away is the garage/shipping recieving building where I have an office. Most of the time I am in there by myself (another big vent I have) and sometimes the field guys come and go.
So today the "main" office had a pot-luck lunch. I didn't know anything about it since I never recieved notice or an email regarding it. I found out around lunchtime by one of the guys who come and go in my building. He asked if I was going up. I went to McDonalds instead. I would have felt uncomfortable being there since I felt was not invited and didn't contribute anything.
What would you have done? Would you have gone anyways and made a statement, like "hey, I'm part of this company too." Or would you have said to heck with them and gone elsewhere, like I did.
I do have to say though I did feel a little miffed by it.

Somedays I like working by myself but sometimes I don't. I have some health problems so I'm afraid that one day something is going to happen and nobody will find me for hours. LOL...what a dork!

I would guess that there was no formal invitation to the pot luck, it was just publicized by word of mouth, and you were overlooked. I would have gone, expressed how much I enjoyed it, and tell them to let you know next time, because you would love to contribute.

You could also have brought your McDonald's fries to share. I bet they would have been the hit of the party! :goodvibes

Yes, that would totally bother me, but I'm not sure how I would have handled it.

I wouldn't have gone, but I would send an email to whoever puts those types of things together and ask them (nicely) to make sure you are notified next time.

:thumbsup2 I probably would have gone, too. Pot lucks usually have plenty of food for sharing. Sometimes in our office informal things like this get planned and there are unintentional "overlooks." I doubt anyone meant to slight you.

2nd this! I doubt it was an intentional oversight, in our office people just start talking and throw it together and dont always think to inform our mechanic out back untill we page back there and tell him foods ready. I would have just gone.

I would have felt weird about not being told, and I'm pretty sure I would not have gone, but I would have acknowledged that they had something, just so they knew I knew. :cutie:

When I first started working where I work now, I was overlooked for everything and I started to get a real complex. As the months went on I realized that my co-workers are just real disorganized about things and plan things the last minute and half of us never know what's going on.

You can come to my pot luck anytime. Just don't bring a jello salad please! :teeth:

I always think it's rude to leave someone out, no matter what the circumstances. You should have been notified of the lunch.

ETA: I probably wouldn't have gone either. It would have made me feel uncomfortable.

i would not have gone-- i would have felt uncomfortable-- maybe they didnt want me there......im wierd like that.......

or....you should have walked over, pretended like you didnt know it was going on and see if anyone said anything to you.......if they did-- say "wow, i guess i missed the memo"...kinda joking....(but really NOT! :rotfl2: )

but in reality...you know they probably just forgot about you becasue you are not in the office all the time.

Like you, I would have gone to McDonalds. This ole girl doesn't show up *anyplace* uninvited. And yes, like you, I'd be a bit miffed.

And this part of your message concerns me: " Somedays I like working by myself but sometimes I don't. I have some health problems so I'm afraid that one day something is going to happen and nobody will find me for hours."

Please be sure co-workers know this and are aware they need to check on you periodically! And hopefully they also know how to help you if there's ever a need!

Yes I would have felt wierd too & not have gone.

Nope, I would not have gone! Our offices at the shelter are in one main section with the exception of the child advocate. She is located in a different part of the shelter, by herself (it is so that she can be with the children in the play room). We would NEVER have a get together without letting her know.

This happen to me last December. The people from the 2nd floor decided to have a holiday party in the third floor board room and we all work for the same boss, I am just upstairs because that was were there was room for my desk. I work right outside of that room. They all trooped in with the food and presents and decorations, left the door open and had a party. About 45 mins. into the party one girl came out and said "Do you want to come to the party?" I said, no, and I wouldn't have come if I was invited anyway and proceeded to shut the door in her face.

OMG!! That is soooo rude- i cant believe so many people dont have a clue! :sad2: i go through life everyday just shaking my head at some of the things people do!

It was rude. Intentional or not. I probably wouldn't have gone. But thats because if I was in a set apart area like you I would have felt a little odd. I would have let them know though so they wouldn't forget to tell me the next time. Now, where I work I sit back by the potluck tables so if I wasn't given the memo, or the email skipped me, I would know there was food. And I wouldn't hesitate to participate. I would know it was an oversight. I might offer to run and get something from the store across the street though. But there is always so much food and more than once someone has forgotten and was not kicked out. If its an office thing then everyone is invited to participate.

I would have gone with whatever snacks I had in my desk and then announced that I was "crashing" the party when I arrived. A little humour goes a long way. :thumbsup2

I wouldn't have went....for 2 reasons...one I would not go without an invite figuring maybe they didn't invite me on purpose...the other is I never do "pot luck" things..I don't like eating from peoples homes I don't know...don't know how clean they are-they could have cats walking on their countertops and that grosses me out!!!

I am in the same situation at my company. There are only 3 of us in the building that I work in. We are further away than you are though. We find out about things at the last minute or after the fact. We will not attend. At Christmas we went out and had our own party. Did we hear anything about why we weren't there? Nothing! I cannot wait to find another job. This has been going on for 1.5 years now. I can't stand it and my co-workers feel the same.
