My Dad is having surgery for his stage 1 Melanoma. I know he is going to be ok but I'm still nervous that they are going to find more than they anticipated. His doctor is confident he will be fine but it's hard not to worry.

I know what you are going through. I had the same surgery in 2001 and when you hear the word Melanoma, it scares you beyond belief. I had to have two surgeries to get clear margins but no other treatment and no other reoccurance, and I pray the same for your dad. I know that he will be fine, and encourage him to keep up with the followups to make sure it does not come back. I still go to my dermatologist every 6 months.

My Dad had a stage I melanoma removed 9 years ago, he's been fine ever since. It's good that your Dad caught it in time.

Can you (and the pp) share any more information about what prompted them to go to the dermatologist? My nephew has a spot that my sister is insisting he see a dermatologist about. She's trying to figure out how you FORCE a 22 year old man to go to the doctor.

It was during his yearly physical that his doctor saw a few moles that he wanted him to get checked out. He went and saw a dermotologist and she removed a few moles and spots. Just the one came back as melanoma. Luckily it was an easy surgery and he will have his results next week. They are testing some lymphnodes as well to be sure that he is clean. His surgeon said that she would be shocked if there was anymore cancer. Keeping our fingers crossed for a good report!

I don't have an answer for you however on how to get your 22 year old nephew to go to the doctor! My husband is 41 and I can barely get him to go for a physical! Men!

This convinces me even more that we need a new family doctor! My current doctor doesn't do a skin check during a phsyical, and has never suggested a screening by a dermatologist. I happened to have a spot that kept itching and he removed it. It came back as a basal cell cancer (minor, I know) and since that time I have seen a dermatologist yearly. I even convinced my husband to get screened! Yay!
