Would like to learn about renting points

Hi all you wonderful DVCer's

We are planning on a Jan 2010 trip, it'll be almost right after MLK weekend. I have to wait until this Dec/Jan for the school calendar to come out. My kids get several days off plus several half days.

Anyways, when do I need to start seriously look at renting the points? There will be 7 of us 4 adults, 2 juniors(13 &12) and one child (7).

We can add on tickets and DDP too correct? This is all new to me.

You will need a 2 bedroom to accomadate all of you. You can purchase your tickets at the resort when you check in. You can also have the person you are renting points form add the DDP to your reservation. you pay for that upon check in so you would n' pay it once there, not to the person you are renting points form (unless there are changes for 2009--we do not know what the particuliars are for DVC and DDP yet).
I would attempt to rent points as soon as you know what your dates will be. The sooner you get the reservation process rolling the sooner you will know if you can get what you want.

Your reservation won't be bookable until 11 or 7 months before your check-in date. I would try to find someone who owns points at the resort you want to stay at so you get the 11-month in advance booking window (so Feb. '09 for your dates). Those who do not own at that resort have a 7-month window. To better insure you get what you want it would be best to find someone who owns where you want to stay.

Keep in mind that some owners do not know that far in advance whether they will need/want to rent their points out, but it never hurts to get things started as soon as you can.

You can buy tickets anywhere you like. If you wait until you get to the resort, you'll pay top dollar. Check with some of the discount brokers and save a little money.
