but I'm a little hesitant about the weighing in part. I've never let anyone see my weight. How do they go about doing this? Is it in private?

Thanks!

Kurry the weight watchers center that I go to, I can't even see what I weigh. I step on the scale, but the readout is behind the counter and only the person behind the counter can see it. They write it down on a card for you and you don't even know if you gained or lost, unless you ask out loud, or until you look at your card. I don't know if this is the same if you weigh in at say a church or Veterans Hall where they hold some weight watchers meetings but I would imagine that even there they try to be very discreet.

You should join, because apparently you have been thinking of this a lot. And a woman at my meetings said she thought about it for 3 years, but she wanted to lose some weight on her own first. Well three years later she still hadn't lost any on her own and she finally joined and NOW she's losing. But she regrets all that time she wasted. Do it for yourself, and don't wait another week!!! Then come here to the WISH board. We'll support you!!!!!!!

My meeting place has 3 scales by the counter with the display behing the counter. They also have a room you can go into if you want to be really private. Take the chance and go...I was very embarrassed by what i weigh...but I've already lost 11.6 pounds and that was in only 3 weeks. I have never lasted on a diet this long before...and IMHO WW is not a diet, it is changing your way of eating! I actually eat more than i did before but because I write everything down and eat all this "good for me" stuff it has been very easy!

Give it a try! I think all the WW centers are set up basically the same way, but like anniet said, it might be a little different if you meet at a church or other meeting place.

They are VERY discreet. One of the things that is really BIG with WW is when you lose 10%. The first time you weigh in, they mark on your card how many pounds you have to lose to lose your 10%. At that meeting, you get special keyring and they make a big deal out of you. BUT they NEVER say how many pounds you lost to get to that 10%!! (And I'm sure that if you feel uncomfortable, they will be glad to give you your keyring privately, and NOT make a big deal out of it, if you ask!)

The same week I hit my 10%, I also passed a 5-lb. loss marker. This is also usually celebrated at the meeting. My leader gave me my 5-lb. star privately before the meeting started, so that she could give me my keyring at the meeting.

I think a lot of people begin WW with feelings similar to yours. But I've been told that when they see how positive the meetings and reinforcements are, they lose a lot of the feelings of embarrassment and are glad to have the honors!

Good luck. I do hope you'll give WW a try.

Kurry, our other loser friends are right. The weighers will be very discreet at Weight Watchers.

My meetings are at a church, and the scales are in a kitchen area. But the staff is really good at positioning the readouts so they are not visible, and they very discreetly write your weight on your card.

I think you'll find that the staff and the vast majority of the members will be very considerate of your privacy. I expect you'll find this to be a very safe environment, where you can share as much or as little personal information as you like.

And no one at these meetings will be surprised, shocked or disappointed in you because of your numbers. :D

At the WW meetings I go to, they use the scales like the ones in the doctor's office. If you don't want to see your weight, they will put a card up.
No one else can see you at the scale. It's behind folding screens.

Definitely join. I stopped going two months ago because of a plateau after losing 50lbs and I found I really missed the people and the support. So I'm back at it and more determined than ever.

Good luck--We believe in you!

Thanks for all the support guys. I think I will try to find a meeting somewhere near me and at a time that will suit my schedule.

Thanks again.

Just chiming in like the others to encourage you to try WW. They are great!

When I recently joined I was so nervous to step on the scale. One of the leaders was actually my children's 5th grade teacher so that didn't help but I've never had to weigh with her. The other leader I always try to go to, when she weighed me in on my first visit I was so embarrassed but she said when she started WW she would have loved to have had my starting weight. That made me feel much better and less self conscious.

Just remember even though the leaders all look good now they have been where you are. Soon you will see those numbers drop and you'll almost look forward to getting on the scale to see how you're progressing!

Come on - go - get the member clip and just see how support we can be! Can't wait to see you join the best "losers" you can find!

Like Liz said, the leaders at WW look good now, but they've been where you are.

You'll see lots of different sized people at a Weight Watchers. I know members at my meeting who started with as little as 10 pounds to lose (in my dreams!!!), lots with 30-50 pounds to lose, and several with over 100 pounds to lose! (Some have WAY over 100 pounds to lose. ) I joined with about 75 pound to lose, and I felt about average in that crowd. You'll find these people at all different stages of success- some just starting and some who are at goal.

But ALL of them are in the same boat you are- working toward getting fit and healthy, and willing to encourage each other to reach that goal. It's really hard to feel self-concious about your size once you get started, but your privacy WILL be respected. Just share only as much personal information as you're comfortable with.

Will you be joining us here, on WISH, Kurry? Please say yes. I need you in my support group :)

There are lots of WWs here. We have a lot of fun and WISH has been so helpful for me. I just know you would find it helpful too.

Come on...join us. We have a lot of fun here.

Katholyn

My friend and I weigh in every week at side-by-side scales and we have never seen each others weight. There is a group of 3 of us that go to meetings together (all started at different times) and 1 girl has lost 62 lbs, 1 girl lost 34 lbs and I have lost (I joined last) 10.2 lbs; and yes that .2 lbs count!:p I really wish now that I had started when they had. With about 35-40 more pounds to lose I am about average in our meeting. I have found that there is very little judging at meetings. Everybody is there for the same reason.

Katholyn needs another tag <font color=purple>"Honorary Weight Watcher"</font> :p
