Would joining Interval International directly be of any use?

I was poking around II's site to try to get some additional info on some of the resorts we can exchange with when I saw that you could join II for $79 a year (basic). What would that do for us DVC members? Would we be able to get other resorts not listed on the DVC website? Would there be any more flexibility than what we have now?

Thanks everyone

Jon T

Actually you can't do that. II requires a resort to be affiliated, DVC has a corporate membership and as such, DVC members are not elligible to join II. Trust me, I've tried.

But to discuss the issue of pro's and cons is an interesting one. DVC members currently have no membership fee, $75 exchanges, limited exchange resort list, no cash getaways, no bonus weeks, and almost no trade up potential. We do have the right to do request first 2 years out and to say yes or no if something matches.

There would be advantages for some and disadvantages for others. Those that would trade only to the top resort during top times and do so rarely are better off with the current system. Those that want to do a lot of exchanging, travel off season or already belong to II would do better with a direct membership. Remember it's $79 per year (some minor volume discounts at times) with exchange fees of $121 domestic and $149 international. OTOH, one could deposits studios during good times of the year and get most anything they wanted most years at other resorts.

Thanks Dean. One thing you said I think is wrong. Didn't we just get some kind of cash getaway opportunities? I know that they just started, but we do have them now right or is what they are offering something different?

Thanks again

I don't think those are cash getaways, only last minute exchanges. I haven't followed up to be certain about it though. The terminology can be confusing. DVC's used the term getaway for less than 60 days exchanges while II uses the term flexchange and reserves the term getaway for cash purchases.
