Would I get in trouble?

I used to work at a large medical clinic. One entire flloor shared a break room and refridgerator. A coworker brought her lunch every day and every day someone was eating out of it. She put laxative in a bowl food, put it in her usual lunch bag and just left in the fridge. Whoever it was "took the bait".

Funny enough, one of the janitors for that area went home sick that day and stayed out for two days. She never had the problem again, nor did she get into trouble for it. I would assume he had the good sense not to admit he had been stealing food.

I would probably be too chicken to try it myself, but I don't see how anybody can prove that you put milk in the fridge with your NAME ON IT with the intention to make somebody else mildly sick. Your name's on it, so obviously it was for you. It's not your fault that somebody else drank it and got sick.

Mayeb I will just tape a note to the firdge stating that I add laxatives to my milk as well as my special Jenny Craig food so I suggest they keep their hands off. But not put anything in there.

I think that's the generally accepted best idea.

Barring that, how about putting a really nice-looking box of chocolates in the fridge, but put a note in it so when the thief opens the box, instead of getting chocolates she/he'll see a big note inside that says
I WOULD HAVE GIVEN YOU THESE IF YOU HAD JUST ASKED.

I love that!

Hubby's work was having a BIG problem with this. When it first started, someone was actually taking WW meals from the freezer and eating them. HIS meals. There were NO OTHER WW meals in the freezer, but they would go into a bag and eat them. They *had to know* that the meals weren't theirs, because there were NO other WW meals in the freezer.

This got bad because hubby was really restricting his diet and these were budgeted both financially and calorie/Points-wise. Yes he has a great Asian market across the street, but any meal he could get would cost around 7 bucks and be WAY over his Points. It was bad. They were basically walking by his desk and stealing money from him on the days he COULD go get something to eat, and harming his weight loss efforts.

He was then, in Sept, diagnosed with diabetes, and started bringing very specific meals for himself (no more chemical-laden, HFCS containing, high-carb WW meals for him). And someone started taking THOSE. Uh uh, had to stop.

So each time, he complained. Since his immediate bosses know of his blood sugar issues, and they KNOW that it is important that he eat what he has planned to eat, and he can't just go get a noodle bowl at Uwajimaya anymore, they took the theft even more seriously (they were taking it seriously before, just not as strongly as recently). He now gets blood sugar numbers that aren't diabetic at all, strictly with diet and exercise, and his bosses know that (and are quite impressed), and the KNOW it's vital that he eats what he brings, NOT something random from the store's food booths.

They actually stated that when they caught the thief, the theft would be job-loss-worthy. YES! Any theft should cause a job to be lost, and it's wonderful that his bosses recognized it as theft, plain and simple.

Ever since that email went out, and it's been about 2 months now, there have been no incidents.

As much as you might want to, it probably isn't a good idea to put something bad (esp. any kind of medication) in food. I would probably start bringing my milk in a thermos, the kind where you can't tell what is in it from the outside. If the theft continues, I would then be tempted to replace the milk in the thermos with soy milk or something else that looks like milk (and is still a food item) but that doesn't really taste like milk.

An alternative would be to get a metal lunch box, go to home depot get a hasp and put it the lunch box, then lock it with a padlock!

(you could stencil "required due to food thieves" on it!!!)

I remember a similiar thread here on the dis about a year ago. Anyone else remember it?

Something about how a teenage boy kept stealing the neighbor's gas can that they used for their lawnmower, stealing all the gas and leaving the neighbors without any gas to mow their lawn. The gas can owners wrote a post (here on the dis) wondering if they could get in legal trouble if they put sugar in their own gas can on their own property.

I think the general consensus was that YES, you can and will get in trouble.

why don't you just fill it with sour milk one day....that should do the trick

If I dissolved laxatives in a little carton of milk with my name written all over it and place it in the work fridge? and if someone else uses my milk and they have a nice trip to the restroom?

DH did it when one of the dental students kept stealing his milk. He didn't get in trouble back then. Who knows what would happen now. With your name all over it? You should be okay.
