Would it make sense to buy an annual pass if we go to WDW about 5 times a year, a week at a time with a park hopper... so about 40 days a year?

Oh my goodness, yes!

If you go into WDW parks over 11-12 days in one year, an AP will save you money.
Plus, an AP offers other discounts on meals, shopping, special tickets, and (at times) on resort stays.

Yes.

You'll pretty much pay for the annual pass after two trips. I think the math is that a AP is less than $100 more than a 10 day ticket. So if you are going for 5 weeks you have more than paid for the AP.

Plus 5 weeks worth of discounts might pay for the AP as well.

10% off most resturants (although you might do better buying the TiW card depending on your eating style, it's an extra $100 but you get better food discounts)

10% off merchandise

10-20% off tours

Plus if you happen to luck into any AP Room Only discounts at the Resorts.

Not even close!! A 6 day park ticket w/hopper is just under $400 and an AP is $675. So by the 2nd trip you are already saving money with the AP. This is not even counting the other discounts you get with it.

Oh my yes. I miss having APs and going four times in a year.

Thanks guys! I just might convert our park tickets to AP when we go in January. Just might have to convince my DBF:lovestruc first. Fingers crossed:thumbsup2
