Would a Swiss Army Knife be allowable??

I usually have a Swiss Army knife in my checked baggage. It has a scissors, a blade, a corkscrew, nail file. The blade is only about 2 inches long. I see the list of prohibited items includes knives . . am I reading it too literally? I would use it to cut my room service sandwich in half or cut tags off my luggage, etc.

on another cruiseline in Europe DS's Swiss army knife was confiscated and we had to reclaim it upon disembarkation. Sorta a pain to remember to get it back.

Wow. Thanks.

How about a little pair of scissors? I am planning to do some art - watercolors - and would need a small pair to cut paper. Like they give to kids at school.

I brought a small pair of pointed embroidery scissors (a 2 inch blade) on our first trip. I had to have something sharp to poke a hole in my door magnet for the peep hole. Maybe I was lucky, though. It was in my checked baggage, probably with other toiletries, including nail scissors.

Thanks Figment Spark . . . this all seems so . . . excessive? I remember going through the TSA screening with my Mom who was in her late 80's and they wanted her to stand with her arms out and they wouldn't let me at least hold one hand so she didn't topple over and they said no. She couldn't even hold on to her walker. She never flew again.

Wow, that's pretty stupid/nasty of them. I hope your Mom was okay. With any other company, I'd tell you to complain, but with TSA, we're all just glad they allow us to fly at all.

I've taken scissors on before as well, maybe 4" scissors I keep in my toiletry bag. DD also has "student" scissors in your emergency diabetes bag for cutting tapes. Never had a problem with them on the ship.

I know what you mean. When my DD was first diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of 9, her Medical bracelet set off the metal detector. They made her stand aside. She was obviously upset and scared and when her dad tried to touch her shoulder and comfort her, he was curtly told to "not touch the subject." Really??? Well to this day, she is nervous about going to TSA.

I bring small scissors in my checked bag every cruise and never had them confiscated....small scissors are OK in the checked bag but a Swiss Army Knife (even a small one) most likely would be confiscated from checked luggage (all checked luggage gets screened behind the scenes) and you would have to claim it at the end of the cruise. They would notify you onboard that it was confiscated.

As far as TSA I just roll with it and I don't need the hassle that would come with arguing but now they seem to be going the other way....talking about not requiring screenings at some smaller airports across the country. That is just silly. My DD and DGD often fly from RDM to EWR or JFK (Oregon to NY) and they always have to change planes along the way. This would mean they would not get screened at RDM (which is so easy) but in San Fran or Denver or Salt Lake before their connection which would be a real pain. Some connections are so tight as it is adding a screening would just make it crazy.

I also don't get the liquids thing. Whose to say someone couldn't do something nefarious to bottled water or liquids (an inside job) on the other side of security. Just makes no sense to me.

I used to carry a leatherman micra with me everywhere. I had it on a Disney cruise in my checked luggage and it was fine. Problem for me was, I carried it in my pocket off the ship and was almost detained when I tried to re-board, even though it is a very small tool with a very small knife. They let me keep it but warned me to leave it in my cabin the rest of the cruise. They are not allowed a lot of places now so I stopped carrying it. I've had to take it back to my car everywhere from Sporting Events, Concerts and even some museums.

I fly out of a smaller airport as well and even though it always requires a connection, I love how quickly and easy it is to get though security. I hope TSA doesn’t go through with this new idea. It’s still a major safety concern for all passengers and like you said, it will require additional time if you plan on making your connection.

Obviously it's not TSA doing security on the Disney ships (or any cruise ship) but it's the same mentality, sometimes overzealous and occasionally without common sense. I'll bring a small pair of kids scissors and hope they get through. I'm sort of leaning towards taking Cunard across the Atlantic instead of flying in the future. Not because I think flying is dangerous, just a huge hassle. I took a train from Chicago to Seattle and it was really wonderful!

In the 'old' days I found flying rather relaxing. You could be in your own little world and look out the window and read . . . It's not like that anymore. Hoping my Transatlantic Disney cruise will be relaxing! Going to see if I can find serenity with Mickey!

My sister does hand quilting on the ship. She brings a pair of child's scissors with a rounded safety point [small enough to meet CATSA/TSA rules for carry-on] and has never had an issue on DCL. They are in her carry-on for both the flight and onto the cruise. They have come in handy a few times for non-craft reasons.

I have done two transatlantics on DCL and LOVED, LOVED, LOVED them!!! Enjoy!

Word of advice. Don't forget and accidentally bring said knife ashore. If DCL confiscates it, no big deal, you'll get it back at the end of your trip, but if the security on shore gets it, it is gone forever. I have a little pair of scissors I keep with me and most of the week it was no issue. On and off the ship, I didn't even remember I was carrying it. Then, at one port, I tried to get back on the ship, and they found it. Confiscated. Gone forever. No chance to get it back later. For me it was only scissors, so no big deal, but I wouldn't want you to accidentally lose your SA knife.
