Since the cost has decreased, is it worth it to repair digital cameras?

I have a Kodak Color Science 8 megapix, and for some reason, the entire screen / viewfinder is darkened, blackened, and you can't see anything thru it. Well obviously if you can't see, you can't take pics LOL

So is it worth taking for repair? Or just toss it? :sad2:

Toss it but don't forget to take any pictures still on it off and remove any memory card before you do. I was at Aldis the other day and they had a 12 megapixel camera with case and tripod for $59.99. Unless you have a digital SLR cameras have become disposable items.

Depends on how much you love it. We have a Canon S5 1S that we love. We've had it for 2 years now. In Feb it developed a speck of dust under the lens. We took it in right away to get it removed before our March Disney trip. Initial cost was going to be $150. We spent $350 for the camera so it was worth it for us. It still costs $350 so it hasn't gone down in value nor replacement cost.

But, I highly recommend you research a place and ask around. We went with one that said they could get it done in time and in person (as opposed to having to send it some where). Well, it took them 5 weeks, not 15 days and it ended up costing $230, not $150. If you are in DC, don't go to Strauss Photo Technical Service.

In the end, we are happy we did it, though. We ended up getting a smaller Canon for our Disney trip since our main Canon was still in pieces. Now we have 2 :)

It's usually better to just get a new camera. However, call the manufacturer first and see if there are any issues with the camera that they are fixing (for free) beyond the typical warranty period. I'm not familiar with Kodak, but Canon has done this for different models of cameras that have known issues. For example, I have an OLD Canon that has a cracked screen, and if I send it in they will fix it for free since that particular model had issues. The problem is, I can't find the darned thing! :sad2:
