I noticed an online price of 99.99 for the Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED Zoom Lens (non-VR) and wondered if it was worth having in my collection? I currently have the Nikon 18-135mm lens on my Nikon D40.

I am usually the one to suggest to everyone to buy buy buy. In this case I am not certain for the speed and focal length of the lens that you would be better served to save the coins and wait to get the VR version or the 18-200.

Better glass is always better IMHO

If you already have 18-135, I don't think this adds much to your collection. Especially the non-VR version.

I have the non-VR 55-200 (came with my D40 in a package deal) , and I really don't like it at all. I would stay with what you have, maybe look towards the 18-200 VR.

My .02.

Agreed. You will not be satisfied w/it if you 18-135 has VR and you're not really gaining much that you can't make up with a couple of quick strides.
