Worst National Anthem ever

While the overall arrangement was absolutely awful, I don't think I hated the vocals. To be sure how I feel though, I'd actually like to hear the vocals on their own to see how butchered they really were.

I think Roseanne was much worse!

The Fray's version was pretty bad, but I think it had potential to be okay. The guitar just sounded horrible. I don't know if the guy was hitting the wrong notes or if it was just terribly off pitch but without the guitar I think it would have been fine. Not great, but not too bad. The guitar made it painfully bad, though.

Yeah Roseann was the worst. This version was hideous in its own right. Why don't they just hire people who can acutally sing. I never understood hiring people who can't sing just because they are famous. No one wants to listen to our National Anthem being butchered.

I was expecting something much worse. Yeah, the guitar was BAD, but the singing was actually nice and sounded like it was sung to the right melody, just the accompaniment was off.

The singing was good, but that guitar was :scared:.

The guy has to have had his guitar accidentally tuned wrong or something. It's not that it's just an unusual style; there's something totally wrong with the notes/chords in there. But it sounds like an accident, and not like they meant to play it like that. I wonder if they couldn't hear themselves through the monitors or something :confused3.

They would have been better off playing the classic Whitney Houston rendition from the 91 Super Bowl. The version last night was ridiculous.

I was expecting something much worse. They tried something different and many people didn't like it, but I don't think they butchered it. It wasn't nearly as bad as Roseanne.

I dunno'. Roseanne Barr still tops the charts for worst rendition ever in my book.

One difference though - Roseanne was trying to be bad. Those Fray guys were actually trying to make pretty music.

Isn't there some rule about changing the arrangement so much it doesn't even resemble the original? If not, there should be. Musically, that's not even the same song.

I thought it was awful...my Facebook was blowing up Monday night with people saying the same thing!

In all honesty, I wish pop stars/celebrities would just realize that singing the National Anthem is NOT about them and they should simply sing the melody as written. No weird trills, vocal gymnastics or kooky arrangements. If you really want to hear an amazingly wonderful rendition, try to find a recording of Huey Lewis and the News singing it around 1984 or 1985 from either a Giants game or the All Star game. Beautifully arranged for 5 voices, performed acapella with the melody shining through. I have never heard anyone do it better.

I actually started a thread a week or so ago saying the same thing. Singers need to sing the anthem as written and leave their personal stamp off it.

The Simpsons did a great take on it quite a few years ago. They had Bleeding Gums Murphey sing the anthem. The clock in the background started with him singing at 7:30 and when he finished it was like 7:42 LOL

Oh say, oh say, oh I say can you seeeeeeeeeeeeee
