If I rented 255 points and had them transferred to my account to make a reservation for a OKW Grand Villa in April 2008, what would happen to those points if I needed to cancel or downgrade to a 2 br? Can they be transferred? Does it depend on their use year? The person I want to rent from specifically says that he wants to rent for a 2008 reservation so that he doesn't have to borrow into 2008. Does that make sense?

You couldn't transfer them back because you would exceed your once a year transfer allowance. You could bank them into next year, though, as long as you hadn't passed your banking deadlines.

If the point morphing bug is truly fixed... Wouldn't the banking windows run according to the renter's deadlines?
