Worried about the Half Marathon

I too am another that hasn't been consistent with my training and worry about finishing. My goal is to start and to do the best I can. Of course I want to finish and that is another goal, but this is to also help me remember that I need to start focusing on myself a little more. We will be there for each other and I am hoping that the excitement around me will help keep me going and not thinking about how far I have to go.

Sending PD to everyone who is going to be traveling and we'll see you soon.

Thanks for starting this thread. The encouragement I've read here is very uplifting. I haven't walked more than 7 miles and haven't seroiusly trained. But I am determined to start and give it my best. I really like the idea of looking at it as 13 one mile walks. My DD is joining me. Hopefully we will cross the finish line together. I am looking forward to seeing you all next Sat at TE for dinner and walking with you Sun.

Count me in as terrified too! I actually signed up for the FULL with my husband and sister. Then in March after an MRI I found out that my screaming back pain was due to 2 fractures in my lower spine. That has pretty much brought my training to a screeching halt. I did make it up to a bit over 8 miles during training in July, but went back down again after pulling a tendon in my ankle.

Suffice it to say that with minimal training, and a lot of "wogging", I will be trying to suffer my way to the HALF finish. I look at it this way... Disney has my $90, so I want my $90 souvenir! You can bet your sweet bippy I'll be wearing that Donald medal the next day too!

So, is there anyone else here who really believes they will make it on pure grit and determination? I do!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Good luck to us all!

Tracy

Well, with all the problems I've had this year, I'll be doing good if I make it 2-3 miles!! But, I'm going in knowing that! So, hopefully, I won't be too disappointed and instead will be relieved when I get swept up! Then, I'll just be waiting at the end to cheer all of you on!!

I have the same fear as everyone here. I have not worked out during the past three weeks and my eatting habits have been something to be ashamed of. But come heck or high water I will finish. I keep saying two things to myself. My first quote is right out of the mouth of Peter Pan on the Magic in The Streets CD and its "Anything Is Possible...If Only You Believe" and my second saying is something my God mother would sing all of the time it "Somebody Prayed For Me...Had me on Their Mind...Took The Time to Pray for Me" I sing this Hymn in my head while I run and it's gets me through the tough everytime. We all will finish with out being swept. I learned while in Basic Training 9 years ago is that sometimes we can push ourselves to do the unthinkable. Sunday is one of those times that we will push ourselves to do something we never thought we would be able to do...It's scary and oh so exciting at the same time. I'll see everyone at the marathon...

Well Ms. Doe was telling me that if you can walk half the distance at a decent speed that a marathon website said you should be able to complete the entire distance just fine on race day due to adrenaline. DH and I walked 6 miles in 60 minutes yesterday! We ran about 2 miles of it we think - I am going to calculate it tonight to make sure. So I am feeling much more confident about the race! Thanks to everyone who has posted it has been great to read the responses! :grouphug:

I've heard that as well--Good luck!

You have no idea how badly I needed to read this thread. I was originally very gung ho when I signed up to walk the half marathon. My SIL agreed to walk it with me, and it became our goal for 2004. I got into a walking groove, and began training, and I was SOOOO motivated (such is the life of a perpetual dieter!).

And then...
summer came, ds was out of school, it was SOOOO hot here in Alabama... so I thought I would slow down and pick it up in September when the weather was a little better. I walked a little again in September, and then we got into a car accident in October (on I-75, on the way home from WDW). Our truck flipped and was totalled, but all 3 of us walked away from the accident, praise God. DS had a scratch, dh had some cuts and bruises, and I injured my rotator cuff.

And that injury was all the excuse I needed to stop training.

But a funny thing happened today. I accidently started reading info on the Half-Marathon, and thought "I wonder..." Finally, I shared my thoughts with dh, and he has been so incredibly supportive! And then I read this thread, and just knowing that there are others out there like ME, I've decided to go for it! So, if you've got one room for one more on that "slow walk to the finish line", count me in!!!!

Of course there is always room for one more!!!!

Can you make it to Trail's End Saturday night for dinner. We're meeting there between 4 and 4:15. If not, then look for the walkers wearing green scarves and purple glow in the dark necklaces at the start line and you'll find some other WISH Walkers.

Hoping to see you there!!! :Pinkbounc

Susan,

Thanks for the warm welcome! I just confirmed ressies for OKW this morning, so it's definitely a go! I'm planning on trying to make it to Trail's End on Saturday. I'm looking forward to meeting everyone :).

I'm not going to look at this as one LOOOOOONNNNGGGG walk. I'm going to think of it as 13 1 mile walks. I'll finish 1 mile (no problem!) and then I'll just do another.

I LOVE your attitude!!! :flower: When you break it down into little teensy 1 mile chunks it's not so bad after all! It's just a mile, right? You can do a mile with your eyes closed!
