My 14 year old daughter, now for the 2nd time this week is complaining that her peripheral vision is blurry.

The first time it happened it went away within an hour or so, so we didnt worry about it. Its back now this morning and I made a eye doc appt for this afternoon.

(Actually after asking her again she said it has happened off and on at school).

Of course I am worried now about what it could possibly be. Anyone ever had this happen?

I've never really asked for any prayers or PD before, but if you could just please send some good thoughts this way. After looking it up on the internet (NOT a good idea) my head is filled with brain tumors and glaucoma and many other unpleasant possibilites.

Thanks!

I hope it is nothing serious, I will pray for her. Let us know what the eye doctor says after her appointment and try not to worry too much.

Is she having bright flashes of color too? Could be ocular migraines. Unlike the name implies, they don't hurt. I've had them before - they are stress related

I just saw the eye doctor because 2x I had seen kaliedoscope type things in my periphereal vision.

He told me it could have been "visual migraines". He wants me to have a visual field test done soon too.

Maybe she needs glasses - let us know how she makes out.

Good luck at the dr's appointment. Has the school ever tested her eyes? My dd failed her eye test a couple of months ago and we took her to have her vision tested. At 10 yo, she's 20/200. She never complained with her eyes bothering her, or squinted, so I was pretty shocked it was that bad. She had hers semi tested at my eye dr the year before and they weren't that bad yet, but he could tell she'd need them in a year or so. The eye dr said she probably went through a growth spurt and that's what caused her eyes to go bad like that. I remember when the eye dr looked at me after he did her exams, I just knew he was going to say she had a tumor or something too.:o

I was going to mention the migraine auras also. You can get them without the headaches and I've had them many times. I especially get them when I am having low blood sugar and drinking some orange juice helps as does taking Advil. (I don't have diabetes just a little low blood sugar when I haven't eaten in awhile.) They also occur mostly at "that time of the month" a day before my periods.

Usually it just effects my peripheral vision but at times, my vision will be actually cut in half. I can only see one half of my field of vision and the other is just blanked out like that blindspot everyone has. Unfortunately having a blind spot that extends half way across my vision can be scary.

Other times, my vision will be kalediscope, where everything I look at is broken up into kalediscope fragments. And a few times, I have had a wavy vision like when you look at the mirage on the hot highway ahead.

I have never gotten the headaches but do feel sleepy when the vision distortions do go away.

Just stopping by to wish your daughter the best, Melora. Hope to hear soon how things went at eye doc. She is in my prayers for a good report.

Melora, I hope all went well at your daughter's eye doctor appointment. I'm thinking of you both and sending pixie dust your way.

Your daughter is in my prayers, please let us know how she made out at the eye doctor.

I too was going to say it sounds like migraines. I usually lose my peripheral vision first and the see star like flashes of light to the point where I can hardly see at all.

I hope you were able to get some encouraging answers at the appointment today! Please let us know how it went.

I have a relative who had some visual disturbances like that at around that age; after lots of testing the doctors finally decided it was just part of the hormonal upheaval that happens to girls that age. The problem went away after a few months and never returned.

Hugs to you and your daughter!

Thank you all so much for your good wishes. I managed to make it through the afternoon while my husband took her to the doc by watching POTC with Sarah (16). One adult had to stay with the younger kids, so since I figured Jeff would better know what questions to ask I sent him.

Well as this as a form of ocular migrain that in not uncommon in teenagers. He did a very thorough exam and dilated her eyes and aside from one eye that was 20/40 her eyesight looks good and her retina, blood vessels and optic nerve look fine.

I hate to get so nervous about stuff like this. But once your mind gets going its hard to shut it up. :scared:

Once again, thank you all for your kind thoughts. :sunny:

Thanks for the update, Melora. I'm glad to hear that it's not very serious and I hope that it is not something that will bother her very much. :)

Glad it's nothing too serious....:D

I'm so happy that your daughter got good news at her appointment! It's so hard for us Moms to not worry - I sometimes think this kind of stuff is harder on us than on the kids!

Hope the problem disappears soon for her! :sunny:
