Does anyone know if WDW will be doing anything special for World Cup coverage? I was thinking since ABC and WDW are joined at the hip then maybe?.............I think it would be pretty neat to see some kind of screens set up in Epcot since Soccer is THE international game and Epcot represents the world........it would be fun to see, say Italian castmembers watching Italy play their game.........then of course, they wouldn't really be concentrating on "work". Oh well, maybe it will have to a visit to ESPN then!

No, they wouldn't be concetrating on work, but I am pretty sure they are not all working at once.

What a great idea this would have been for WS. England, France, Italy, Mexico, and most especially Germany, the host country. Considering ESPN and ABC are the US tv outlet, I am surprised this didn't happen.

Hey this would be a great idea. That is if someone in this country (i.e. the vast majority of visitors) gave a hoot.

Heard them talking about the same thing today on the radio today.

It's not just the general public that has no real interest but the corporate America as well.

Sorry but FOOTBALL here is played in the fall and winter.

DD would love to watch some however we have better things to RIOT to here in the states.

That really surprises me for the people of America not to get behind their team and even more so that they have worked hard to break into the top 10 in the world. Beats throwing an egg shaped ball around! :confused3

I will try not to succumb to your thinly vailed attempt to get fans of the greatest sport in the world angry, but besides that, people in this country also don't give a hoot about Guy Fawkes Day, Bastille Day, or Norwegian Independence Day, but it still gets a mention at WS. The World Cup, is FAR more important :thumbsup2

Also, aren't we supposed to be trying to give visitors a glimpse into the cultures of these countries. Well believe you me, next month this tournament IS the culture of these countries. And we American sports fans could all use to see how in other countries the greatest and highest paid althletes risk injury and throw away there precious little off-season to put on the uniform of their nation, with little or no pay for it, and represent their homes and their countrymen.

Okay, you got me!

And there, my friend, lies the reason why the world's most popular sport is NOT popular here. People are not exposed to it, because the American media machine could NEVER play a game that goes for 45+ minutes at a time without commercials. That's why we don't care about soccer

Well said dbm, wish I had put it that way!
Most businesses (mine included) will shut down for the England matches, 4 years ago even schools had TV's in and cancelled classes.

The reason we don't care is that watching soccer is like watching paint dry. The only sport more boring is NASCAR.

Pandora's Box you are hereby open.

Ahhh, but people in this country clearly DO care about NASCAR, even if it is 4 hours of cars making a left. But not soccer, even though we have an enormous immigrant population from countries where it is all they care about. So what is the difference? They can build in time for commercials during a NASCAR race. They can not during soccer. No matter how big it may get, it still won't be broadcasted like other sports. Nobondy cares about hockey either, but it gets broadcasted no matter how bad the ratings get. And believe me, Edmonton and Carolina will draw about 4 people outside of thise cities and Canada

I'm not sure if being shown on OLN counts as being broadcasted.

I was kidding about NASCAR. I personally think its ridiculuosly boring but I understand its almost as popular as Baseball, Football, and college football.

Just out of interest, Sky have just paid over 1 billion pounds for the rights to the English Premiership for 3 years. What are the figures in the US for Football, baseball, hockey etc.
Watching paint dry hmmmmmmmm, beats watching adverts every 2 minutes!

I understand its popular over there but so are frogs legs and kidney pie. And have you ever watched paint dry. It can quite the experience.

MJ, please, frogs legs are French and it's steak and kidney pie, pick the kidney out and it's not bad!
I think I have experienced paint drying but I think you may call it baseball!

We also enjoy watching the same play shown over and over and over and over and over again. Even if that play is as exciting as a routine groundball.

And how long do these games take?

Well there you go. One of the biggest complaints you always here is the games are too long. No matter what the sport. The start too late and the games last too long. That's not because of the sport, it's because of the ads.

The average NFL game is 3 hours long, with 1 hour worth of clock time, and an average of...get this...less then 15 minutes of actual action! The rest is blow-hard commentators and commercials. Soccer on the other hand, is never more than a 2 hour event including pre-game and half-time, normally less, and has a bare minimum of 90+ minutes of action. The only non-action is the 15 minute half-time. But we American's seem to prefer watching a whole lot of nothing

How dare you. Baseball is America's past time.

But it is not the World's past time? That's soccer...ehhh...football, which is why showing it at the WS during the single biggest sporting event...heck single biggest event period...is a GREAT idea!
