I am the queen of an awful schedule..
I am student teaching. I am out of the house by 7:45 and I am in my classroom until 3:30-3:45. I would be later, but my room is used for afterschool program and I can't get any busy work done there.
Two nights a week I drive an hour to get to my university seminar classes and are in class until 8 pm. Then it's the hour drive home.
The other two nights I am doing lesson plans, unit plans, grading papers, papers of my own for my classes, etc... until at least 1 in the morning every day. I have tests and exams in these classes so I'm studying.
I also do "school work" on Saturdays and Sundays.
My kids have learned to do their own homework, laundry and this year, dinner on the two nights I have classes. Granted the dinner is something easy like soup and sandwiches but it gets done on their own. They also pack their own lunches every day. BTW, my kids are 11 and 13.
My DH has an awful schedule, where he works overnight night shifts so he is either sleeping or at work when the kids are up. I do it all myself. I get them up and out to school, etc. My DH is also in school, so he is also taking courses, studying, etc.
Don't try to do it all. You will drive yourself crazy. The reading and PE are guidelines.
Truth be told, I (as a teacher or soon to be teacher) have to have a home connection component in every one of my lessons, this is required by my district. That is a guideline.
It should also not take 20 minutes to prep and clean up if you have plain burgers, berries and salad. If you get your son to clean up with you that will cut time in half.
