Working on Weight Loss During Training—New Year New Us!

Morning!

Maria- You should only feel incredibly proud of yourself. Doing any exercise is more than most people do, much less 3.5 miles. That is a lot! Ask some of your non-running friends or co-workers if they want to do 3.5 miles with you, and see the looks you get . And at least for me, the first 3-4 miles are always the hardest because it takes my body a while to warm up. The more you do it, the "easier" it'll feel.

Okay, I think what I need to do, instead of posting my meal plan for the upcoming day, is to post what I ate the day before. Because I'm not sticking to the plan, and I think confessing what I actually ate will motivate me to make better choices.

So what I actually ate yesterday is:
B: glass grapefruit juice, coffee /w coffeemate creamer, veg burger w/slice ff cheese, 5 veg pepperoni circles, little ketchup
S: nsa yog w/sf seeds
L: 667 cal Moe's burrito
S: ff mozz stick, nsa cocoa
D: ff cott cheese, salsa, green olives, tortilla chips (not a whole lot), slice ff cheese, cantaloupe
D: banana pudding, glass red wine

Other than the burrito, does that seem like a lot? ::yes::

Hello everyone! Sorry to have been AWOL this past week but I was on vacation and not on line much at all. Actually I lost a few pounds but not in a good way. I ended up with a bit of a digestive issue and my appetite was a little off. At least I didn't have to miss any work!

Everyone seems to be doing well! I will check back in this week for sure.

Have a great week all!

Hi Everyone!

After a disappointing weigh-in Wednesday (retaining half of the Atlantic, trust me), I am happy to say I seem to have rebounded. It's only been half a week, but I was down 3 lbs., which lets me know I am doing the right things.

I have been super vigilant about diet and exercise this week. I had five workouts, three of them were running, 2 on the exercise bike. Tomorrow I'm doing my long run -- 3.75 miles this week.

We finally have sunshine and warmth, so I'm exciting about getting outside. I'm also a little nervous. I need to buy an I-pod or MP3 player to run with. Any suggestions? We don't own anything that advanced, we are technology neophytes. We both want to get one, so our outside runs will be more enjoyable.

I am running my first 5K on June 9th. It's a local YMCA race, and it's supposed to be a flat, fast course. I'm really excited, and pretty nervous, too. Maybe I'll try not to think about it too much.

Susan -- I'm sorry, it sounds like your vacation wasn't exactly what one would hope for. I hope you're feeling much better now!:goodvibes

Jennifer -- You are right, people would think I was losing it if I asked them to run with me. They don't even want to walk around the block at lunch!:sad2:

Dave-- I'm glad I shouldn't feel silly for doing some walking, because trust me I expect to! I think I will last alot longer over time if I don't run the whole way. :cool1:

Kristi-- How is the Core treating you? I have been really sticking to my points for the last few days. I'm starting to not feel hungry, so I'm getting used to eating less again. It just takes me awhile to get going, but I think I'm finally headed in the right direction. :thumbsup2

Jen-- Were you able to run your race? How is your foot?

Cam -- Tell us more about sparkpeople. Do you find it to be really helpful?

Well, I'd better turn in if I'm going to get up and run! Everyone have a great night and plan for a terrific week!

Maria

Hi, everyone! I have been missing the support of this thread. I really need to get here more often. I have been so off my eating game. First, I was tied up on an expedited proceeding that took me through a hearing on 4/2, then I went away to visit my aunt and uncle for the 3 day Easter weekend and ate wayyy too much. I came back from that weekend totally exhausted and just never recovered. Soon it was the 2 year anniversary of when my Dad died (4/14) and constantly dreading the 2 year anniversary of when my Mom died on 5/1. I have been totally wiped out and finally went to the doctor last Wednesday and finally got a diagnosis (or 4) and lots of meds. The bronchitis is the worst, but the sinus infection is causing severe headaches, the upper respiratory infection is making the bronchitis coughing seem really icky, and my ears hurt from nearly having an ear infection from all the congestion stuff. Needless to say, when I feel like eating, I am not making smart choices. Definitely HAVE to get back on track. I am only down net 5-7 pounds from the marathon and I know I could have done much better than that in the past 4 months.

As for sparkpeople -- I think it is absolutely the best resource for tracking calories taken in and burned. Once I got my most common foods into the favorites section, it made tracking food so easy. I even set up a bunch of food groupings for the meals I eat regularly -- morning coffee; whole wheat toast & fat free cheese; chicken, corn, bean & salsa mix. Awesome resource! And now there is a DISers team over there, too, in case anyone is interested! just send me a PM with your email address and I'll send you an invitation to the group that another WISHer very generously set up.

Food today:
B: coffee; honey nut shredded wheat w/RF milk

Hi Cam we missed you.:flower3:

Thank you, Dave! It's great to be back.
I did pretty well on food last night, thinking of all of you.
I used a bunch of leftovers and some core items and made a mixture of diced grilled chicken breast, kidney beans, corn, broccoli & medium salsa, topped with 2 slices of fat free cheese. I had leftover brown rice and threw that in there too. It was delicious and I have leftovers for lunch. For dessert, I ate a weight watchers frozen peanut butter chocolate chip 2 point bar and 7 honey braided pretzels.

I got up at 2:36 am. ( ) to make Palos & Spa reservations for our July Wonder cruise (90 days out is 4/23, but ressies opened at midnight on the west coast and so, 3 am on east coast). Despite my weak spirit, even though I was up and about for an hour and then lying in bed awake until 5 a.m., I did not eat anything else. That is a personal victory.

Food today:
B: coffee w/skim milk; banana; vitamin; antibiotic :rolleyes1
L: chicken, corn, kidney beans, brown rice & salsa mix
S: apple
D: grilled steak; some kind of green veggie; baked potato

WW weigh in tomorrow night is going to be ugly. I think I am up 2-3 pounds from the last time I went, which was 3/20. :sad1: Oh, well, getting back on track. That is what we do, right? No landslide to more pounds gained.

Cam - did you get your Palo's reservations? I just love that place. The brunch is just so yummy.

Maria - thanks for asking, I am feeling much better. Actually being sick on vacation was a good thing. I didn't have any reason to push myself to get back to work so I was able to really take care of myself.

I ate a pretty big lunch today - a BLT pizza at California Pizza Kitchen but I had Slimfast for breakfast and will have the same for dinner so I should be OK calorie wise I think. I will run tonight an do a bit of ab work at the gym as well. This is NOT the week to weigh in so I think I will wait until next week.

Did any of you happen to see the show on TLC last night about morbidly obese people. One guy ate over 36,000 calories a day! A woman they profiled ate over 9.000 calories a day. It was a very interesting show about food addiction and I would recommend it if they show it again.

Have a great week everyone!

Susan -- those calorie counts sound so scary. Apparently I am supposed to eat no more than 1550 calories/day to lose about 1-2 pounds a week. Yesterday I had 1747 due to the much higher calorie count than I'd budgeted for with the brown rice and the kidney beans at dinner. At least they weren't empty calories, but I can't even imagine eating 9,000 calories in one day.
I am so sorry you were sick on your vacation. I am so glad you are better now. :flower:

I am very excited about the reservations I was able to get for us.
I got DD a massage as a surprise.
Made ressies for the surial mud bath for DH and me
Made ressies for a couples massage (on the ship, not at Castaway Cay)
Dinner at Palo's for Howard and me
Brunch at Palos's for Howard, Jenn and me

Definitely worth getting up in the middle of the night in order to get everything we were looking for.

Hey all, not much to report from me. I am up the darn 2 pounds that I yo-yo with. I know why, I have been grounded from running for 1-2 weeks because of PF... so I let life and food take over. UGHHH. Today I am doing really well tho!!!

Cam - Mel forwarded me an invite to the Sparkpeople page. I am so addicted to that site!!! I check in every night when I can and play around. I have even found some great recipes. Oh and I agree with Dave, you have been missed!!!

Susan - When I was scanning channels last night I saw that show listed. I didn't watch it tho. Maybe I should!

OK, work is nuts so this is short.

Good morning!

Maria- Congratulations on signing up for your first 5K! Races are so much fun and a really really good motivator to keep up with training.

Cam- Glad you're getting back on track. I've been making some questionable food choices lately due to stress, although it is just everyday stress and not related to anything as sad as your parents' passing.

:offtopic: On Saturday I had to hang out with an acquaintance who never fails to insult me. I think it's because she is insecure, but it still bugs the heck out of me. Examples: a couple years ago, while we were all still in law school, she told me and my DFH totally out of the blue that she and her DFH would "have more money" than us; she recently lost her engagement ring and told me, "you could go out and get another tiffany setting anywhere, mine was custom made"; she asked me what my wedding dress looks like and made sure to tell me that when she was getting married she tried on one like mine but didn't like it; and she regularly insinuates that my DFH and I abuse alcohol and illegal drugs (we don't). :headache: :headache: :headache:

I've mostly done ok on the eating front, but some mentionable slips were a whole bag of Sour Patch Kids at the movies, office birthday ice cream cake on Fri and a big slice of leftovers on Mon, and Danish butter cookies yesterday and today at work (4-5 each day).

I am very much looking forward to the Minnie and taking a couple days off from work!!

Have a good day everybody!

Maria -- Can't wait to hear all about your race! I will be working with Special Olympics that day at the state's Summer Games and I will be thinking of you!
Have you decided on an mp3 player yet? I just bought a (DIS) lime green ipod shuffle (the really tiny kind that clips on to your shirt) for $79 at Best Buy and I love it. It holds sooooo much music and I have it set up with a fast-paced play list to help me maintain race pace when I am training outside on my own. Let us know what you decide!

Jennifer -- I'd say that that woman is not a friend and actually seems to be toxic, KWIM? I'd distance myself from her as soon as possible. Especially in the career you've chosen, you can't take a chance on having someone like that damaging your reputation. I hope you don't mind my candor!

Jen -- please do not worry about those couple of pounds. They will definitely come off when you are able to resume normal activity.

Susan -- How are you doing? Back to 100%? I hope so! :goodvibes:

Well, yesterday's eating went a bit off track when I went to the library at lunch before eating; it was so nice out that I couldn't bear to come back to my office. So, I walked to pretzel boys and bought a turkey sandwich on a soft pretzel. I figured out it was about 450 calories! Then I also got a garden salad which I saved for dinner. I ate the sandwich for lunch and then did my leftover chicken, corn, bean & salsa mix over the huge salad for dinner with a side of broccoli. I am very happy to say I salvaged the day with only 3 flat crisp pretzels & a 100 calorie chocolate pretzel for dessert, bringing my total calorie count for the day to 1,091. The scale was my friend this morning (surprising since I have not exercised since last Monday) and I am hoping WW weigh in tonight isn't too bad. I expect to be up 1-2 pounds from my last weigh in 5 weeks ago, but I'm not beating myself up over that.

Food today:
B: coffee w/skim milk; banana, vitamin, antibiotic
L: "free" salad w/packet of tuna (90 calories) & fat free mayo (20 cals); steamed broccoli

I hope everyone else is having a great day!

Jennifer, sounds like your friend is the kind slapping was made for. We love you, you are an ace in our deck.

Cam your bubbly personality was really missed, don't you leave us any more.

Maria, I love your avatar. It's funny how we identify each other with our avatars. Your's always makes me smile.

Everyone hello.

I had a lousey morning. I couldn't get Erica out of bed so I had to go walking by myself. I forgot my iPod so I had to listen to the traffic along the side of the road. I kicked a bag and got tarter sauce all over my leg. But you know what? By the time my 8 miler was over the world didn't look so bad after all.

13 days to Oink Oink Flying Pig WeeeeWeee all the way home!!!

Dave:hippie:

Dave - You kicked a bag and got tarter sauce on your leg??? Well... that is something that would happen to me!!!!:rotfl2: I guess it was one of those days, eh!!

Cam - I am impressed that you finished with 1100 calories for the day. A good day for me is under 1500. I am a sad case when it comes to my food!!!

Jennifer - I sorry, but those don't sound like accidental blunders in a conversation. That is just not nice. So when are you getting married??? You want to see the dress from me wedding and compare.... just teasing!!!

OK, I am having lots of work takes over days. I need a vacation!

DOH!!!!!!!!!! I forgot to mention. I did 40 leisurely minutes on the bike, pulling DDalmost4 in the trailer. It wasn't as easy as it sounds. She doesn't like to stay buckled, so I have to drag her up hills and then overcompensate for her jerking the bike every which way!!! Tonight I want to hit the elliptical at the gym if there is one open. I am hoping to get back to running on Friday.

Dave -- this had me :rotfl2: . Not AT you, of course. It just sounds like something that would happen to me. Good for you for getting out there even if you had to do it alone and without music. :thumbsup2 You ROCK, WISH buddy!

Jen -- Yeah, 1550 is supposed to be at the top of my calorie range and I am always a bit over, so keeping it under after my lunch splurge yesterday seemed momentous for me.

I realized yesterday that I have been making some really huge mistakes with my eating and really breaking some of the cardinal rules. The biggest thing I have been doing wrong is eating any meal at all without a fruit or veggie PLUS a protein. That guideline has always saved me in the past and really boosted my weight loss and I have gotten away from it recently.

This morning (after the banana), I ended up having fat free plain yogurt with frozen unsweetened strawberries & some sweet 'n low. My stomach was growling so loudly that my friend commented on it. I figured if I didnt' eat something I'd make some bad choices. Keeping with the protein + veggies model, for lunch I am doing tuna on my salad. For dinner I have broccoli and I'll make some kind of meat. I think by stopping to think about what I have been doing and the results I have been getting I am able to remind myself of what I SHOULD be doing. I have read a quote -- "If you keep doing what you've been doing, you'll get the same results you've been getting" or something like that. In other words, time for me to stop and re-evaluate and fix what's broken.

Hi Everyone,

I've been posting on the training thread for a while now, but now it's time to start on this thread. The training thread has helped me stay on track so I'm hoping for the same result here.

My goal is to lose 30 lbs by next January 13th. (I'm running the WDW Marathon.) Since it is 37 weeks away I think it's a reasonable goal, but I've had problems in the past staying motivated to eat healthy. I have a big sweet tooth and I tend to indulge it especially when I am tired or stressed.

A few years ago I bought the WW at home package and had some success. I'm going to try to do WW again counting points. I started a week ago and lost all of 0.8 lbs in the first week. Not a great start, but since I had a few birthday celebrations this past week including my own, I only stayed on the plan 4 out of the 7 days. I'm hoping to do much better the second week.

I know that dropping 30 lbs will make me a better runner so that is going to be part of my motivation. The other is to set a good example for my kids. My DS5 and DD2 are quite thin, but my other DD2 is a bit more rounded. I think she'll have to struggle with her weight as I did as a kid and I'd like to help her avoid a lot of that by teaching her healthy eating habits.

I've set up a few mini goals to try to keep me motivated. Five lbs is the first goal so I hope I'll be able to reward myself sooner rather than later.

I look forward to losing with all of you.

Cindy

Cindy -- :welcome: Your goal sounds very realistic! And your motivations are the best! We are all helping each other stay on track here. I know the more I am here, the better I am about eating. I have to get back to feeling accountable. ;)

Cam- I think you're totally right, and I do try to avoid her as much as possible. On more than a couple occasions her big mouth has come back to bite her, so I think people know what she is like.

Dave- :rotfl: about your story. It's very windy where I live because we're close to the bay. People leave the lids off their trash cans and their trash blows everywhere, and of course they don't pick it up. One day I got mad because there was garbage on our driveway *again* from the neighbor, so I (being very mature ) walked over and kicked a Coke can back from whence it came. It was not empty! And I got sticky Coke all over my leg.

Jen- :rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2: I am so riled up today that I did a double take, thinking oh no maybe we should compare dresses, just to make sure mine is okay. :rotfl2: Oh man.... too funny. Thanks for helping me laugh at this, because it really is ridiculous. The wedding is January 19 :bride: :groom:

Welcome Cindy!

Jennifer -- I just noticed you are doing the Minnie. Have you been on the Minnie thread? Hmmm. . . I'll have to go see if you are on the WISH list there. It has gotten so big that I'm not remembering everyone as well as I'd like.

----------------------------------
Okay, I'm back and as I feared you are NOT on the Minnie WISH roster, Jennifer! What's up with that? Come visit the thread, sign up for the WISH meet, and the Jellyrolls meet and get with the WISH crowd! :)

Hi Everyone,

I stayed on track with my points yesterday although not without temptation. At the last minute my kids were invited to the neighbors for dinner (a bday celebration for their dog). I went with them and was met with all types of food choices, hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta salad, chips. I declined any food because I just wasn't sure how to estimate the points values for things without the nutrition label and my measuring cups and scale. I waited until I got home to eat what I had planned for dinner. Well, in all honesty I did have 4 sun chips (yes I kept count) and 2 small but delicious spoons of cake. My daughters didn't clean their plates and I can't stand to waste food, so I did sample it. How do others handle eating when not at home? I guess it will be easier once I've done it for a while and understand what a 3 oz burger looks like.

Best wishes to everyone.
Cindy
