Working in the USA

I know this is a long shot, but my son asked me to post this !!

He is going to College to study Sport and Fitness starting in August, and when he finishes his HND he intends to go to Aberdeen Uni for another year to get a degree in the subject.

When he finishes he says he would love to work in the USA - mainly either Miami or Arizona. How would he go about applying for a green card?

Maybe I should have posted this in the USA section? Or can anyone over here help?

It's not at all easy, Sue.

This website offers information and advice:
http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/types/types_1323.html

If he is really serious about looking into this further, he should contact a good immigration lawyer (PM me if he wants a recommendation). They will be able to offer individual advice based on your sons circumstances.

We are considering applying for green cards (the temporary visas we have also allow us to apply for permanent residency at the same time) but it is a long, complicated and tiresome process with no guaranteed outcome.

It depends on what he wants to do out there. I have a degree in Sports therapy, Health & Fitness & I wanted to work in the US as an Athletic trainer but I can't unless I do another 2 years minimum gaining another degree in what i'm qualified in at a college/uni out there as they don't recognise my qualification.

So it maybe worth while trying to research if he can work out there having gained his degree over here.

I lived in the U.S. a few years ago but couldn't 'officially' work because I had no green card.

There are sites that explain this stuff, but in laymen's terms, you have to find someone willing to employ you. If they want to employ you, and can prove that they have no equal American candidates for the job, it can be done.

There are programs that allow you to work for a short time in the U.S., in particular fields, and I believe one of them is Health and Social care. That's a good way of finding out whether living there permanently is really what you want, and also it's a good way of making contacts if you still want to work over there.

Eventually, I came back because I missed the people here so much, but I still miss living there a lot. I work in education now, and I know there are avenues I could explore if I decide I still want to be there.

Another option is applying to do postgraduate work at an American university. I have a friend who did this. It can turn out to be very expensive, but it's doable.

Hope this helps!
