I voted work to live. At the end of my life I don't want to be saying wow I wished I worked more.

Years ago, I was working a lot because I wanted nice things for my dd. Well a hurricane almost killed me then shortly after my df was diagnosed with lung cancer. I couldn't get that time back that I missed that I could have spent with dd and df.

I've got both. Of course I work to live - unless my last name is Hilton, or trump, I've got to make an income. Luckily, I love my job as a special needs tutor at the high school level. It's stressful, but I get to be creative, quick on my feet, and the rewards (successful kids) are incredible. And once in a while I get to kick a butt or two, which is also rewarding in its own way ;)

With taxes and cost of living on the West Coast... can't afford early retirement.

I guess neither???

I enjoy working and I just have gone back to work after many years staying home with $0 income. Because of this, we learned to live on one income, so I don't HAVE to work really, but we did want $$ for our kids' colleges, and some extras.

Thankfully I do enjoy what I do for the most part.

Hmm, I probably lean more toward the live to work column. I love going to my job everyday, and I love seeing the fruits of my labor result in something real. I remember in college, I hated going to class every day and couldn't wait until I could work and put my degree to use. However, I do also enjoy the time when I am not working and believe I have a healthy balance between work and fun/personal life. I'm so much more a morning person than a night owl, so while I rarely stay past 5, it's no strain at at (quite the contrary) to get to work at 7 am before anyone arrives at my office to get stuff done.

I am a magazine editor.

Work to live. I actually like my job, but not enough to keep doing it if I didn't need to.

Same. I do for a living what others pay to do for fun - but that doesn't mean that if I won the lottery I wouldn't quit in a heartbeat!

DW and I were live to work until our son was born. We were 30 at the time. Nearly 30 years later we are still work to live.

At one time I was live to work when the economy was good. Was making double mortgage payment. Had more money back than making double mortgage payment than having no mortgage now. Same job just way less ot. So glad I was making double mortgage payment hate to have a mortgage in this bad economy. Only making about 2/3 of the money that i made 10 years ago.

I graduated with my Nursing degree in 2014 and it took me 8 months to get a job. Thank God I love my job because I have a long time to work before I can even think of retiring. I work to live.

.
Same here. I enjoy my job (most of the time), but would give it up in an instant if I won the mega-millions lottery.

Lol I would like to meet the one diser who voted for live to work!

Sound like my exH. One of the reasons he's my ex.

I toggle the line... I really prioritize a healthy work/life balance, but I'm also very passionate about my career and consider it a very important part of my life/purpose.

Yep - doing what I do well is important to me but if I didn't need the money I wouldn't even go back to pick up my stuff...

I have always thought of myself as fundamentally unambitious, and work as a necessary price to pay for the life I want to live. But I've recently discovered that I do have a latent "live to work" streak that I have to consciously keep in check until the rest of life permits jumping in with both feet.

For me I turned a hobby into a career and I love it. I tend to do work related activities and training in my off hours because I love it.

Having said that, I work so that I have money to pay for the things I dont want to do (plumbing, cleaning etc) or the things I want to do (Disney!)
