Our party will be myself, DH, DS(14), DS(14), and DS (13). We were supposed to go last June but had to cancel due to training with a new coach. Help! We are planning a trip Thanksgiving Week but need a place with at least a 25 yard work out pool for sons. They will be in prime training time during that season swimming over 5000 yards a day but I need a vacation. The coach has agreed to let them workout on their own that week since they will be somewhat tappering - ugh! Any suggestions?

I don't think the length will as much as a problem as the other people in the pool.

to do what your sons needs - you will have to find a desert area and I don't think you will during Thanksgiving week - unless a cold spell hits the area.

sorry - I would go for one with lifeguards (so the lifeguards could clear the area for your sons - will definitely cost more)
you could always ask....

I really don't concern myself with crowds. Usually the manager gives us permission to swim in the early a.m. before the pools are usually open as long as I stay on the deck. We're talking around 7 a.m. We definately need the length. You just can't work out in a less than 25 yard pool unless you want to break an arm. Swimmers learn to swim by counting strokes if you shorten the pool, they will smack into the wall - lol.

I believe there is a YMCA on I-drive that gives day passes. I have seen some hotels (can't remember which ones) that say they have privileges at the YMCA. You may not want to be closer to the Universal area, though.

When we stayed a few years ago at Silver Lake Resort, they had a large pool area. Included was a lap pool. It is close to the "back door" of WDW, near Sherberth Rd.

I totally understand about needing the lap pool for swimming. My 16 y/o daughter was a competitive swimmer for years. We finally had to let it go a couple of years ago, due to school sports and cheerleading. We also took our first Disney vacation since she was about 5 years old once she let go of the sport.

I know how important it is to continue the workouts, and I agree with checking into the YMCA pool as well. I know there are teams in the Orlando area. Have you tried to contact any of them to see if the coaches would mind letting your children do the workouts with their teams? I would let them know they will be in tapering mode at that time also. Are they preparing for a really important meet? If so, I would try to schedule your trip for a different date, or make sure they train with a coach on one of the teams there in Orlando. I have done this for my daughter while visiting family in Alabama. Once they are USS registered they should be welcome at any pool with a competitive team.

I forgot to say "good luck" to your children for whatever meet they are training for. Swimming is such a good sport, and I have found myself missing the meets and people I have met during all of our travels. My daughter has decided to give up soccer this year, and wants to get back in the pool. She lifeguards here in town, so she keeps up with lap swimming. Swimming is really her great love, but we live one hour away from an indoor pool for training.

Would you need to be a US citizen to use the pool at the YMCA, my son has just competed in the British Youth National Championships for the first time and although training trails off a little over the summer his coach is concerned that he will need some lap training during our 3 week stay to keep at peak fitness! so would be great if we could go to the YMCA a couple of times a week. I did email them a month or so back but never recieved a reply!!

I don't know of any reason why an international visitor would be denied priveleges at the YMCA specifically.

I think you might want to check out the website www.swimmersguide.com for the best source of information for pools that allow lap swimming in any state in the U.S. Again, you may also have better luck contacting a team in the Orlando area directly, and can find the listings on USS Swimming. I hope this information helps you and good luck to your son!

We have trained with YTeam Orlando before (the team at the Y). This time we really don't want to do that because when you train with another team, you do their workouts. They have a new coach who is fantastic but is a bit nontraditional in her approach. We've been with her for 3 months now and have dropped at least 5 seconds off every time. Our plan is to have her write the workouts and they just follow her workouts. BTW, I am a certified coach (I coach a JV swim team at the Catholic School) so I can work them out on my own if I had to -- just want to keep them in her routine.

My older two are the main ones...they 14 and working on Senior Sectional and Zones cuts for next year. Big move being so young but their choice.

That's great to have those goals. My daughter made the Zone team for Mississippi for 2 years, and competed in Houston, TX and Columbia, SC. She's a good butterflier, but through time, has probably lost a good bit of her technique. It's really hard to start over again, especially when she was doing so well at ages 11 through 13, but if she wants to try, I will support her.

You might want to check with the Swan/Dolphin. I know they have lap pools but I don't know the length. I have seen people training in them in the past though.

Sweet Maxine

I sent you a pm.

Thanks kylara, I will email the Dolphin and ask.
