My former company used to have it on a weekday evening at a swanky hall. I went to one of them my first or second year, didn't really like it.
At some point, they moved it to January/February, put it on a Saturday night, at a hotel (with discounted rooms available, but not as discounted as the one PP mentioned), had drink tickets for alcohol, full catered meal, gifts for people celebrating anniversaries (5 years, 10 years, 15 years), individual presentations for those at 20, 25, 30, etc years, then a band or a DJ. I only went at my 20th and then found out I had to give a speech. Then I became a manager and was sort of obligated to go.
When my company was bought, the new owners did the party one year, then cited liability reasons for ending it the next.
My current employer does a thing for the home office, but my department is spread out across the country, so it's just a zoom for us.
