Words that you don't hear anymore.

So I was watching some old Brady Bunch episode with my daughter and BEHOOVES was said. She asked what that meant and then I got to thinking- boy that word disappeared. I don't think I have heard it since that Brady Episode first aired.
What words have you noticed disappearing?

I actually still use the word "behoove." But I think my speech patterns and vocabulary tend to skew a little more varied and formal/educated than most. The same is not true of my message board writing.

Well it behooves you to try to work it into your board writings. (use it 5 times and you own the word or so I've heard. )

My husband used to have a 1SGT that would use the word BEHOOVE. It was well known that if he was using that word, it better happen soon or hell was to pay.

The other day I used the word obliged and the kid had no idea what that word was. You could litterally see the blank coming across his face.

Which reminds me about the story about the English teacher telling her class to "use a word fives times, and it will be yours for life," only to hear one girl in the front row muttering under her breath "Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim, Tim."

I use "behoove." When we were first married, DH thought I made up "higgledy-piggledy" and "willy nilly" so I had to look them up in a dictionary to prove to him they were real words. He had also never heard "cattywompus." Lots of words like that have come up through the years with us. I think his family's vocabulary must have been dull compared to ours. We like colorful, lively words. DD uses one that I have never heard and I'm not sure it's real, but it is good. It's "willy wompy." I believe she has combined my use of willy nilly and cattywompus to invent a new word.

Speaking of the Brady Bunch, I still use the word "Groovy" Ok i grew up in the 70s! My kids laugh everytime they hear me say it.

Supper? Like the last meal of the day? It's used very much in my family household in Arkansas. It confuses my poor husband because he uses the word dinner for the last meal of the day but at home dinner is lunch. We just ring a bell so he knows it's time to eat

Davenport, which seemed to be on it's way out when I was a kid. Seems that most people say couch or sofa.

The word "slacks" makes me giggle. No idea why, it just strikes me as funny.

Good question.

I still call some of my tops blouses - the silky ones I wear with a suit - but I can't remember now if the sale papers do any more. I know they call them "tops" but I am not sure if that is b/c "blouses" is too old-fashioned or "tops" covers more than just the silky blouses.

On my charity receipt, it did list blouses, and women's and men's slacks.

I also miss houligan and shenanigans. As in "those little houligans are up to some shenanigans, I just know it!!"

I use most of those words on a regular basis, including supper. I like words, especially fun ones people seldom use anymore. I get laughed at when I say things like "namby pamby" or "program"

"Lavatory" is a word I haven't heard since I left Catholic school. Thank heaven.
