Congratulations!!!!! Good for you! What a terrific accomplishment! Are you going to have a mortgage burning party? I remember my parents and their friends did that when their mortgages were paid off. And, their mortgages were about $60/month.
Congrats - DH & I are steadly working towards that goal! if we stay on "schedule" (ours, not the Mtg companies) we will have paid off a 30 year mtg in 18 years
CONGRATULATIONS!!! How do you all manage that?? I'd love to make that a goal for hubby and I! seeing as we are in our early 40's and just bought a new house within the last 4 yrs..... and I don't want to be 70+ when my mortgage gets done!
This thread is making me sad that I won't be posting the same for 10 more years. We just refi'd to a 10 year mortgage and started payments in January. Since we got such a wonderful rate (3.125) we decided to stop paying the extra into the mortgage payments and instead are using the difference to put more into the kids 529's. As it is now our mortgage will be paid off when kids are in college - which is good timing as I'm sure we'll need extra cash then.
But it would be nice to still be paying the extra and be able to have it done in 5 - 6 years.
Congratulations! We're 7 years into our 30 and just did a refi for 15, thinking we should have that paid off in 12. Wish we could be as good as you and have only a few more years to go! Again Congratulations and enjoy that meal with your DH!
WOW, congratulations! Can't wait until we're there We were just a year away from paying off our first home but then we adopted a sibling group and had to upgrade as our first house was only 900 square feet. We're getting there.....only been 5 years in the new home but we're on a 15 year loan so hopefully it'll be within the next 4-5 years.
I bet you're just so relieved.....and good for you standing up and making them take your money. Sometimes finance companies just confuse me LOL When we have paid off various cars over the years they always want you to wait on the payoff slip too, so they don't have to refund any overage. I'd rather pay a few dollars too much and just get it DONE!
The first year I scrimped to add $10 per month to the payment, I was a SAHM working on my Master's degree.
The second year I added $20 to that $10 for a total of $30, the the third year $30 to the $30 for $60, the fourth year it went to $100, the fifth to $150
year 6-$210
year 7-$280
year 8-$360
year 9-$450
and so on at some point I had to leave it stagnant for a year becasue we needed to get a car as repairs were exceeding the value of the car and were far more expensive than a payment.
When I discovered I was going to be done with it in a year I also didn't add to the last year.
It took a total of 13 years and 5 months to pay off the 30 year mortgage!
