DISers are so smart, I just know I'll get the information I need here. :teeth:

The wooden front door of our house gets quite a bit of direct afternoon sun and the lower half is already weathered a little. Is there a way I can fix this without refinishing the entire door? Can I touch it up with stain or something?

TIA!

For a temporary fix, I've used shoe polish on my front door.

I took a furniture refinishing course through community ed once--the instructor poo-pooed the idea that you have to strip a finish before you re-stain it--he would lightly sand then restain--I've never tried it though! And if you have a polyurethane finish, you'd have to repoly it as well! (Although I have seen stains that are stain + poly all in one step, I've never used them).

Can't wait to see other responses to this thread!

umm you want rofessional opinion,, or a quick fix,,lol

first what kind of finish is on it,, stained natural wood, paint, clear gloss,,

betting stained with a gloss coat,, you probably dont have any acvtual door damage yet but check first, the veneeer( outer thin wood layer) may be seperating,, if it is,,, you neeed a new door,

styained with gloss coat, try a light sanding then recoat with clear gloss polyurethane, you can ghet goos poly at wal mart,, deft thane is my favorite,, and it can be hand rubbed.. sand door lightly, heavbier in the sun dmaged areas, if this apperas to even out the color, dip rag into poly and rub it into the door, let dry,, rrub on second coat,,, wear latex / rubber gloves, and clean hands with wd 40 for a less harrsh remover.

Froggy's answer is an awesome answer. But we didn't do that.

When we lived in New Orleans, our front door was western facing and cooked in the afternoon sun. We actually painted the door twice in 5 1/2 years. We found a color that was as close to the original color as we could get. The first time DH took the door off the hinges and did it "right." The 2nd time was right before we put the house on the market, so he painted in the am, then closed it so it baked in the afternoon. Paint dried in no time! Fortunately, he was smart enough to mark it the 2nd time so we didn't have any adhesion. But if you looked at the door to closely, you could see the color difference where the door met the frame!

Western facing doors in sunny climates are no fun!

Thanks for all your answers and glad to hear I don't have to refinish the whole door. The shoe polish idea is tempting also. Froggy, hope you are doing well! The door is maybe two years old and is a poly/stained wooden door. After we moved in the cabinet maker came through touching up some areas on our stained indoor cabinets and all he did was take a soft cloth dipped in the poly/stain and do a light dab on the cabinets. You still can't tell where he touched up. The stain used on the front door is the same stain used on the cabinets and we still have some left. I may just do as y'all suggest and lightly sand then carefully reapply a light coat of the poly/stain.

Thank y'all so much!!
