We're finally going to get wood floors in our home. We currently have oak with a pretty strong bevel in our hallway, and then bland carpeting in our living room/dining room. We've been looking at wood recently, and decided we utterly hate oak. We really think kempas looks great, though we like Brazillian cherry too. (Of course, we have to have expersive tastes, eh?
)
I've never heard of kempas before. Does anyone know anything about it? We know it is harder than maple but not as hard as cherry. It has a very uniform grain (at least the grade we've been looking at).
We're doing about 600 sq ft. The job requires pulling up the oak and the carpet, a little bit of moving of furniture which my wife and I cannot handle, and of course laying the new floor. How much should something like that cost? We're getting a few quotes but they all are coming in around the same amount, and it's pretty gosh-darned high.
We're utterly inept, so there is no chance of us doing any of the work ourselves. I wouldn't even trust us to pull up the carpet, much less do anything more substantial. And we're so incredibly busy at work that just getting quotes had to wait for us to take a vacation! I don't want to be taken advantage of, so how do we assure ourselves that we're getting the best deal we can, given our personal innate limitations?
