Can anyone explain to me what "points" are? Who, what, when, where?

I've never said anything controversial (yet!), so I don't figure this would apply to me. I'm serious though. I know on another chatboard I go to (work related, not Disney!), people can post anonymously. However, there's always people talking about "I looked at your (something or other, I can't remember) number, so I know it's you." I'm just wondering how that works. I mean, if you're posting from a different computer or something, would anyone really know its you? For all that matters, could you actually have two user names on here? Maybe one 'secret' one that you use when talking about friends/family members that also 'Dis' so they don't know you're talking about them?
