Just back from the Wonder 4 night out of Galveston. A few thoughts and experiences I thought I would share.
We didn’t arrive early enough at the port because I kept reading not to come early but my husband was dropping us off and we didn’t allow for the amount of time it would take him to park and shuttle back, so we missed our port arrival time. It wasn’t a big deal, but I wish we would have arrived 30 minutes early because that is the time it took him to get parked and back.
The embarkation process was nerve wracking worrying about testing, but it only took us 20 minutes to get the results and then we headed up to the check in desk. We asked for an upgrade and the 1BR suites were already gone, they offered us the 2BR or the Walt Disney Suite. The 2BR was $6000. A good price compared to what the price was before we left but still too high for us. Someone in our cruise group said they were offered the same price and they were in a lower category than we were. We waited upstairs about 30 minutes before we got onboard. The little show they do after they announce your name is different than before covid but not necessarily bad, just different. Friends that had never been before thought it was great.

We had lunch in Tiana’s and it was really good. We were excited to be cruising again. The biggest disappointment was not having the sail away party. They don’t even tell you when you are going to be leaving. They aren’t walking around with the drinks in the souvenir cups, its very low key.

The food was really good, our servers were amazing. Palo was amazing for brunch as usual.

The ship felt pretty empty, we had around 1200 passengers

We did the Fury Catamaran port adventure, it was fun and I would definitely recommend.

On the last night we got dressed up to do family pictures, as we got in line we were informed they just had a policy change that masks must be worn effective immediately. I went to guest services to ask why since we are with our own group, no one is closer than 5 feet and the photo would take less than 2 minutes. They didn’t know but the change came from landside. We didn’t do it and we were all disappointed.

Overall I felt safe and that everyone was very careful the whole time. It felt safer than going to the grocery store.

I woke up early on the day we arrived in Galveston. I think what woke me up was the silence and the lack of vibration since we were aft. I thought we had already docked. There was an announcement at 6:45 that we couldn’t get to Galveston because of the fog. We were allowed to stay in our rooms after breakfast. They started posting movies and crafts for everyone to do, then around 10:00 they opened cabanas and the other food places up by the pool for lunch. We got off the ship around 12:15.
It was a great cruise. I do feel bad for the workers because I know they are taking a hit financially because they are serving so few families during each cruise. They are all very appreciative to be there.

Where do you currently go to ask for an upgrade?

Was on the same cruise. Had 10a and was offered the 2BR for $6000.

agree on the stress of waiting for test results. We were 1030 arrival time and tested and waited 38 incredibly stressful minutes.
Talked to some folks and they said we had 1400 people on board and 900 crew members.

Side note on the fog morning. We enjoyed staying on the ship til noon! It was nice not to rush off. Our flight wasn’t til 4 so it worked out well for us.
But we knew several people that had flights at 1130 or 12. I think 2pm flights woulda been tight as well.

Our servers told us 1200 but I wondered if they really told them. We were also told that the CDC only allowed disney to have 50% of capacity on board so not sure if that is correct either.

Perfect reason not to book an early return, I have never heard of that happening before but it would have been very stressful if we were trying to get to the airport. We watched movies and then had lunch before getting off.

There are reports a few times a year of a late arrival due to fog in Galveston.

We were on this same cruise. First time out of Galveston. Liked having some extra time on the ship the last morning as we had driven so had no flight to catch. Can only imagine the stress for those with flights.

Disney is very organized with everything, including protocols. Definitely fewer people than our last cruise. I was told there were 1400 passengers out of a capacity of 2500. Shows were great. Saw Encanto in the theater and they did a good job of spacing people out.

Our room host was replaced two days in. I asked his replacement what happened to him and was told he was in the medical station. Of course, that got me thinking that he tested positive for Covid. Although I will never know because DCL never informed us of being a close contact, if he was indeed positive. I heard from some others that their servers disappeared after a day or too as well, not to be seen again. There were a couple of rooms next to us in which their keys and lanyards were still on the doors the next day. Either these people missed the boat or they had tested positive and were turned away.

Great information.

So, it sounds like now they won't allow you to get your picture taken without a mask on?

When we cruised out of Galveston a couple weeks ago you could part at the terminal basically for $10 more than offsite parking. I highly suggest that to everyone.

I think they call it like terminal side or something like that.

For us it was dead easy. We finished our early breakfast and then they called the walk offs at that point. I know some people like just putting their luggage out but I prefer just finishing packing overnight and carrying our own luggage off.

The traffic was none as well leaving the area but we also parked right at the terminal so it was a very relaxing experience. We got off so quickly we actually drove to a playground near the airport for the kids to play.

He may have simply been a close-contact to another CM. Reports are that many CMs are in quarantine with negative tests but deemed close contacts, and the CM protocol is to quarantine as close contacts. A similar situation impacted the Fantasy last week, and in fact they ended up closing the Edge and Vibe for a few days because of staffing.

When the ships are full or when there are more than one ship in port, that onsite parking in Galveston can be a nightmare! One year there were so many people trying to get in it was taking over an hour just to get the car into the lot. So now we reserve a spot at an offsite place. They have a shuttle or it's a 10-minute walk.

It didn't exist until this fall.

I looked it up its called express parking. It would be pretty much impossible for it to take an hour. You are talking about the parking garage across the street I think with the walk way. The express parking is right next to terminal 2 (where Disney is) and is on the same side of the street as the terminal.

If you were dropping your bags at the terminal you already are there to park.

We parked four four days $70 prepay. It was one block to terminal 2. So easy!

Oh, wow! Will look into that. It used to be so terrible.
