Many a cruise rookie goes on a 4 nighter to try it out. Agree w/ a previous responding poster that indeed, cruising is not to everyone's liking. Both DCL ships are terrific, and I have done two cruises of each length on Disney, but I am also trying a second RCCL cruise this winter (fit the budget much better for both us and our friends) and am not averse to trying other, non-DCL at other times. Most things that are Disney have some sort of a premium price--simply, do you want to have that special Disney touch be part of your trip?
This board has oodles of good info--but there is a large majority biased heavily in favor of DCL. Just understand the built in bias, is all. And remember that it says something to have legions of devoted groupies. And you won't find such a devoted board like this for any other cruise line, anywhere. Frommers has a cruises and ports of call travel guide, very packed with info, that is rather unbiased I felt, and compares all the lines on an equitable basis.
That said, my bet is if you start on a 4 night Wonder cruise, the thing you will Wonder most is why you didnt just book the 7 night in the first place because you'll absolutely HATE to pack up on that 4th night...and you'll book a 7 day while on board. That's how i got hooked--and I'd already taken a 4 night RCCL cruise that I enjoyed but wasn't raving about. DCL made me rave--still does.
