Wonder in Alaska!!! May 27, 2013

It's official, we are joining this one last minute.

We live halfway between Seattle and Vancouver so if anyone has any questions for locals just ask.

Last time we took this we took the Amtrak train up and back. This time we will just park the car.

Lack of airfare made it cheaper than the repo cruise the week before for us.
Will read the threads and catch up.

Welcome!

Our 25th is on the 20th, embarkation day of the repo and our DD's 19th b'day is embarkation day of this cruise.

Lots of celebrating will going on for this cruise!

My family and I will be on the 7 night Alaskan cruise. :thumbsup2
Its me my DH 44, my 2 DS's 8 and 10 years and my mom and dad.
This is our second cruise, our first one was on the Dream in 2011. Double dip at Castaway Cay. This will be my parents first cruise ever. We have second seating for dining.

For those new to the thread and are on FB, in the first post there's a link to join the FB page.

My family and I are taking Amtrak from Los Angeles
I see there are two stations in Seattle. Which one should I plan for us to go to? My son wants to see the space needle, will we be far from that?

Can I ask where you rented you car from in skgway and how much it cost?
Thank you!

We haven't booked the rental yet - but from what I understand, there's three rental agencies in Skagway: Avis, Alaska Green Jeep and Sourdough Rentals. I've read some reviews about Sourdough not being that great, so we'll most likely be renting from Avis or Alaska Green Jeep.

About 1½ hours, maybe a bit longer. Basically it's a long street that leads to the docks, about 4 blocks long, with a few things/shops to look at along the side streets.
Found some maps online for you: http://skagway.com/walking-tour-and-trail-maps/

listing of shops: http://skagway.com/business-category/shops/

activities: http://skagway.com/business-category/activities/

Perfect! That's exactly what I was wanting - someone to let me know how long they think it takes to see Skagway. It's so hard to tell just by reading about a town how long it will take. Thanks for the links too! It will help me decide what's on our must see list.

You are most welcome. I found the website to be very useful, I'm glad I found it too.

Not sure if there are any volunteer or paid firefighters here, but the firehouse in Skagway has t-shirts and other items for sale. Last time we were there the one man gave us a tour of the firehouse and we bought t-shirts and also raffle tickets that benefit the AK Fireman's Association.

Hello Cruisers! Finally remembered to log in now that we've decided to keep this cruise date! I am on the FB page & sent a pm to Val about joining the FE.
DH, me & son - 9 & daughter - 8. We are from the Space Coast, very close to Port Canaveral! So has the FE group been named or an image picked out yet? We are sailing on Memorial Day, which is special to us Americans; however I see we also will be joined by quite a few from other countries! :wave2:
Many thanks to you all sharing info!!! We also saved just under $40, by checking our cruise price! TY

My wife is thinking of joining, though she may just be honourary as well, since she doesn't drink.

I have added the 2 families to the FE.. sorry it took a little while to reply... volleyball tournament all weekend!! :) good news is they got 2nd place!!

As far I know there is no official name for our cruise or logo. ( last year we did a cruise the same time and we named it Mickeys Memorial Day Fantasy.)

if anyone wants to design a logo.. I am all for it!! ( I can name things just not make logos!) :rotfl2:

Hi, I now have contact information for your event if you still need it. I am also setting up an event for our cruise on June 3-10 Alaskan also. I have called it The Glacier Gathering. Check it out on our thread. My event is open for men as well. Let me know if you need the DCL contact person. Michelle

Just a reminder that I have tiaras available for the Champagne Girls if anyone needs one. The price is $8. Please let me know. I have 9 left.

I have a luggage dilemma for this board....

Has anyone looked at shipping stuff ahead of time to the port?

Has anyone done it and had problems or successes? We are flying from the east coast and winter stuff is heavy. We thought that shipping it might be easier than hauling it ourselves. I am hesitant though because if the items are lost, I cannot just run to wal-mart and replace them. What do you think?

We have shipped a box to the ship and also to the hotel. Both worked fine. On one hand I liked the hotel because we could go through it, add some things to the box, etc. Just confirm with the hotel to expect it and confirm it got there. However, then you have one more thing to get to the ship. If it goes directly to the ship, no worries. :thumbsup2

We are driving to the Cleveland clinic to take my dad for his pre-op work up. His knee fusion is a week from Wednesday (yeah another hurdle closer to our cruise to Alaska!) We have four hours and are chatting about the trip...hence another post.

For those who have sailed this cruise before, we have a weird question. Is the ship winterized such that there are common areas that are sealed? So you can watch the scenery and not freeze?

I hope all goes well with his knee. It's not a weird question. We've been on the Wonder before but have also cruised Alaska on another cruise line. There are some indoor places although not a ton, but standing outside is not too bad either. The inside passage is really where you want a good spot as we are cruising. Of course, we're form SLC, Utah. We cruised the last Alaska cruise in September, we had a great time.

Hi there. My family is going on this cruise along with some friends. We actually live in central Alaska we are hoping to explore the port towns a bit.

I'm still looking at booking tickets and hotels and such. Anyone go through Disney? What are your experiences and thought about cost and what not?

TIA
Robyn

The only thing we go through a TA for is to book the cruise. The only reason we do that is Costco offers a cash card just because you book through them. The price between booking the cruise through a TA or Disney is none. What you will find are "perks", like on board credit (OBC) or Costco's cash card or the sponsor of this thread "Dreams" I believe does OBC.

Rarely have we booked excursions through DCL. Every once in a while it is worth it to do so. Do your homework though, most times it is not.

ANYWAY......Hi! We just booked. It's our 8th DCL, and 11th overall. We love cruising!

We're interested in FE's. Can you please tell me what our current counts are for cabins/people? Also, do we have a firm cut off date?

DH (Bruce) and I (Lori) are bringing 3 of our 4 kids (using "kids" loosely) they are DS 22, DS 18, DD 17.

And...Brumbie!!!! Stop with the pic's of Mickey Bars! Holy cow my mouth is watering!!!! :lmao:

My BIL is a firefighter, so we may have to stop by and get him a gift. Thanks for this info! :D
