Wonder in Alaska!!! May 27, 2013

I have to check if her distant UK cousin is up for another trip.

Corinna

Hm... Well if Hedgie and her cousin will both be attending the tea event, perhaps they wouldn't mind a little company from Eeyore? He normally stays in the room, but I think he can be convinced to venture out for a little like-sized company.

I just read that DCL does not allow over the door organizers as they scratch the doors. Of course mine arrived from Amazon last week. :headache: Also gel-type stickers/hangers (3m?) are not allowed on cabin doors anymore. Having never cruised before, will the lack of a hanging organizer be an issue? Alternatively, are the bathroom doors narrow enough that one might use a hand towel as protection between the hangers and the door? Thanks!

We have had all plastic ones before and didn't have a problem. You could easily put a washcloth underneath. But.....my best advice would be to wrap anything or any metal part with duct tape. Then it can't scratch anything and you can use it as you want, and it won't raise it as much as a washcloth.

We have never had an organizer and never needed one. There is amble storage space.

Corinna

I agree with Corinna that there is ample space, but I did enjoy our organizer too. It made it a little easier, although not completely necessary. I think the times it was the most used was when we had 5 people in a cabin. Extra bodies means extra mess. So, it totally depends on how many people you are dealing with. IMHO....3 people it's not needed. 4 or more, it definitely helps.

It's true that duct tape can solve almost any problem :thumbsup2.

Also, one of my favorite tips is a bungee cord to keep the doors open when you have a connecting room. It's nice to have those doors stay open when you want them too. :cheer2:

Absolutely --- does he have Pink? Maybe if you had a pink scarf?

Our second cruise I had read all the boards and had to have the over the door organizer. I don't think I have used it since - but there are only two of us. You could also hang it in the closet if that were an option?

Ooh, duct tape, great advice. It's times like this that I realize how spoiled I have become by my Owner's Locker. Yes, there's a roll of duct tape stored there. Do you think John would consider delivering to Vancouver? LOL!

There's just the two of us cruising so while there won't be multitudes of items, I think the organizer may help, even a little.

Thanks for your help also, Corinne. :thumbsup2

I think I'll pack the organizer anyway and see 1. if I need it and 2. if they make me take it down.

I'm such a rebel.:rotfl:

The gel type stickers/hangers have not been allowed on board for some time now, that's not new from DCL. We've seen many doors that have been stained by the gel stickers. Also, the 3M hangers have not been allowed for a while since they can damage the walls.

As far as scratching the doors, to me that means the doors are getting scratched by not only the hangers at the top but also by the plastic scratching the door when the door swings open and closed.
Would hate to see anyone getting dinged the $100 by DCL for a scratched door for trying to come up with an idea to still hang the organizer on the door. The best solution would be to hang it in the closet.

We have 3 in a cabin and have never felt the need for an organizer, there's plenty of room for DD, DH and myself to keep our stuff.

I put my organizer on the inside of the bathroom door but instead of using the metal over door hooks that are detachable, I strung two pieces of ribbon through holes that were in the top of the organizer and tied them to the robe hooks on the inside of the door.

Did anyone see the article in Conde Nast magazine about the woman who traveled to 12 countries for 7 weeks using one 28"X14"X14" bag?

Years ago, when my DH and I made our first trip to Europe for three weeks, we decided to only use public transportation. We each had 2 bags and a computer case. Changing trains, buses, and pulling bags on cobblestone streets was exhausting. Plus, we found that there were a number of items we didn't use and pants and sweaters weren't cleaned every time we wore them. We washed things in the sink. And we didn't like checking our luggage because every other trip on a plane meant at least one lost piece of luggage. So we made a deal with each other that we would only take what we could personally carry and would be carry-on for flights, limiting the size of the main bag to 20-22" (some international carriers only allow 20" carry-ons).

It's been interesting and a personal challenge to travel that way but it works for us and has taken a number of years of practice to make it work. I have to travel more so I can get more practice in...

I'm heading to LA tomorrow. My oldest DS works in the entertainment industry and has arranged through a friend of his to take me to "Dancing with the Stars". DH gets to stay home and I'll visit with my kid overnight. I'm so excited! I love to dance and I love that show!

It must be getting time to cruise as we are all chatting about packing!!!!! I must admit we are spoiled having lived in Florida, what is the big deal, toss stuff into the car, onto the boat, into the car.....HAHA. Now that we have had to fly to the west coast, we well understand, although I will not be using only two carryon! I envy your restraint. I am working on my "packing list" not because I am super organized, just the opposite. I am trying to see how to limit the number of white elephants being hauled on the airplane. This is the first trip we will not be hauling a full set of dive gear for us both which will be a huge plus. But I do not think I could manage with the two shirts and two pairs of pants approach.

What is the estimated temperature? I am used to living in shorts so I know I will be taking more warm clothes than many of you....But even with cutting back, I think we shall have one case each. I always pack a duffle in case the return trip yields the need to repack at the airport. I was caught on the Hawaiian cruise and did indeed need to restow.

Enjoy the Dancing with the Stars adventure!

Everyone else, have a GREAT DAY!!!!!

Someone has a new hat!!!!!!

Good Morning all -- One day closer to Cruising!!!!!

Love the new hat! My DD will be jealous since Hedgie's has ears and her's doesn't.

We will be spending three days in Seattle and one day in Vancouver before the cruise. Do you think we should pack an umbrella? For Alaska we were only planning on having a rain/wind jacket and dress in layers. But is Seattle as rainy as I think it is?

I always pack an umbrella. If I have it I don't need it. You know how Murphy's law goes.......

I live about halfway between Seattle and Vancouver. I own umbrellas. Usually bought on vacation. Not used at home. Plus for some reason my relatives think I need them here.

At first I did use them. Then I learned about the right coat.

I don't use umbrellas for rain here anymore. It is usually more of a mist rain rather than the torrential downpours in Miami.

Just had a hood on your jacket for layering and you should be fine.

Sunny and not a cloud in the sky today.

Atlanta gets more rain than Seattle.

Thanks for the update. I think of the movies and shows and it is rain rain rain :rotfl:

when it rains here in Atlanta... I always say.. um hello this is Hot-lanta not Seattle!!:rotfl2:

We normally just get wet, water in Florida is warm, but when we head to Disney, We pack ponchos.....and then we forget to pack them, the result, lots and lots of ponchos....:rotfl2:
