I have no clue how many ship builders there are, but is MW considered to be one of the best?

I would say probably yes. At least up to 145000 tons. The reason is that almost all of their work is done inside. Which is how they are able to crank out 3 ships per year. Very little is done outside. The majority of their ships are done early. The limiting factors for MW at least where the DCL ships are made is the gates ang the River Eems. The Quantum Class barely fit thru the gates to get to the river.

As far as the number of ship builders, the number shrinks almost daily. The yards that are left, are either highly specialized, or part of a larger yard. MW for example owns several yards. Newport News is the sole builder of US Aircraft carriers, and little else. Ingersall Rand is Al, pretty much makes smaller US Warships. STX which used to be a major player, is shrinking, and selling off its yards, most notable, Turku, where the Oasis class was built. I think they are back to only 1 yard or 2 in the Pacific. Turku is now owned by MW

So now that we know the Wonder will be returning to Alaska in summer 2017....

...will she be getting the ducktail during the dry dock this fall??

My understanding is that the Wonder CAN fit through the "old" Panama Canal locks with the one-time "special handling" procedures if granted by authorities for the WBPC.

The new locks are supposedly going to open this summer, so the Wonder wouldn't be stuck on West Coast as she could traverse the new locks on the EBPC.

Does the Wonder NEED a ducktail? Will she even be getting the Aquadunk or something similar?? I'm definitely excited to see

I think the ducktail concept is a new thing in the cruise ship design world. It's for stabilizing the ships better. Especially older ships.

The new panama locks will be inaugurated on June 26th, 2016. So, my guess is she's getting the ducktail.

The Expansion Program is currently 97 percent complete. Final testing will be conducting in the following weeks, leading up to the official inauguration of the Expanded Canal on June 26, 2016. More information related to the Expansion opening and inauguration, including media and non-media attendee registration, will be available soon on the Canal’s website.

Ducktails have been around for a while. Theres a few advantages to them, but primarily for the Magic class they are added to change the ships center of gravity lower to comply with the SOLAS/IMO regs after adding the Aquadunk.
As to whether or not she gets one will depend on DCL. If she gets the AD like the Magic did, shell get 1 for sure. If they don't, and leave the upper decks as is, then probably not. It all depends on how close she is to the current regs as to whether or not they'll have to add 1 assuming she does not get the AD or something similar.

Yes the Magic class can fit into the original locks with the ducktails, but its a 1 off request and theres no guarantee that the canal will say yes.
