Women's health spin off: Hysterectomy just curious?

I had one and wish I could have had it 10 years earlier. Definitely a quality-of-life improvement after years of issues caused by endometriosis, fibroids, etc. I say that even though I had a full abdominal surgery, some complications and a longer than normal recovery period. (If I'd had it earlier, maybe it could have been laparoscopic but I wasn't given the option.)

I had one when I was 41.......big cysts.
It was good. No laparoscopic.

I had mine in my mid-40s and really needed it due to severe anemia, endometriosis, cysts and fibroids. My life greatly improved afterwards but there can be issues later in life which are problematic. I would still have the surgery but wish I had known about the potential problems so I could have addressed them earlier with a gynecological specialist. PM me if you want details.

I had a hysterectomy three years ago and it was the best thing I ever did. I had to have transfusions due to blood loss and I was anemic. A hysterectomy solved the problem.

Who doesn't?
I had one. I was already post-menopausal, so there was no issue about my inability to conceive. However I had fibroids that were about the size of grapefruit and a golf ball (you know the old saying-"Most fibroids shrink after menopause"-well, mine didn't. In on Friday, out on Sunday, and a few weeks of not being able to sneeze, cough, or go up and down stairs without discomfort. After that I was fine with having had one.

Yes, I had one due to multiple large fibroids and am very glad I did. I felt terrible the few years prior primarily due to severe anemia.

I had a hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oopherectomy about ten years ago, for adenomyosis. Pain and bleeding were so bad I could barely walk prior to surgery. So yes, glad it was done. Ovaries only came out because of my history of breast cancer, which meant almost immediate surgical menopause. That wasn’t fun. But no regrets. The worst pain I had afterward was from my bladder, where they’d done a cystoscopy after the procedure (to make sure nothing was nicked) and then a ‘bladder challenge’ to get me to pee post-op. That wasn’t fun either but we finally figured out how to deal with it. (Pyridium for a couple of days, which was a very welcome relief.) It took me a little while, maybe a week and a half, before I could walk a mile again. I got stuck one day early on at the end of my street and had trouble walking back. I was trying to rehab and hadn’t realized that could happen. Really important to follow instructions post-op so adhesions don’t form. I found the Hyster Sisters video series really helpful for that. And always go to a good surgical center. Good luck all!

I did not have one. My fibroid issue only surfaced at 47. After a couple of cycles of issues, I was in the hospital getting multiple blood transfusions. All the male doctors were talking hysterectomy. My fibroids were small but right next to the uterine artery. A young female gynecologist came in and said "tell me everything". After four days in the hospital, I wanted the least invasive fix to the problem. She said with my being so close to menopause and not wanting more children, I was a prime candidate for a uterine fibroid embolization. So, that's what I had. It fixed all the problems without the surgery.

I also did my own research because no one could answer why it had happened. So, recognizing I had an estrogen dominance, I researched endocrine disruptors and made a lot of changes in health, beauty, and laundry products. The laundry products did the trick; even my daughter noticed the changes in her cycle. Three years later, I hit menopause. So, no... I didn't want one and I didn't have one. No regrets.

OMG, yes I had one nearly ten years ago after a lifetime of heavy bleeding, severe pain, fibroids, cysts, and endometriosis. I had a (male) gynecologist tell me to 'just have a baby and you'll be all healed.' I had two surgeries for endo and one for cysts. My ovaries were fused by scar tissue to my uterus, which in turn was so hard with scar tissue that children (even if I'd wanted them) were not possible. I finally went to a new doctor after bleeding for six months straight while wearing heavy-duty Poise pads night and day. She said, "you are an excellent candidate for a complete hysterectomy," and I nearly heard choirs of angels singing. I had the surgery, and have never looked back.

I had a hysterectomy a few months and I am so overwhelmingly happy I did.
My physical, mental, and emotional health are better for it.
Had a "move to the front of the long line" total hysterectomy in August 2023 after a botched procedure in Montana February 2023. It went from maybe you will need one (likely not); takes the hospital 6 weeks to call to set up the first appointment to you're scheduled in 10 days - go get these tests NOW!
I had to evacuate in Tampa 72 ours after surgery (hurricane); I moved my furniture off the balcony as mandated; drove to WDW(UGH - no pain meds for that) and checked into a 2nd. floor villa for 10 days. I did great until I walked to the main pool and couldn't get back on my own. The physical recovery was very, very good. My doctor said I was her fastest healer of her career.
The anesthesia fog seriously took the entire time other women said it would. I was post menopausal but guessing there was some hormone other than estrogen still being produced. It took 7 months to be myself again. The weight gain was real - I already lost my thyroid in 2012 and had whipped that issue. I gained 20 lbs. after the procedure and the hysterectomy. I've lost more than half of it now. My body looks different but I feel GREAT!
