Women: When you married, did you change your maiden name to your middle name?

yes, i did. my mom did it way back in 1969 in the midwest too and she told me it was not an uncommon thing then either.

when i changed my name after marriage, the guy at the ss office told me that was a really smart thing to do (keeping your maiden name in some way shape or form).

I dropped my maiden name. It is 13 letters lond so I was glad to get rid of it. I know a lot of people from a lot of different places who have done it either way.

I have a "what would you do" question that is sort of related to this topic. I am married (13 yrs) and have kids, kept my middle name, and took his last name. We are going to be getting a divorce. My question is I don't want to lose my(his) last name because it is the same name as my children....BUT what if one day in the future....way in the future... I want to get remarried. I would want to take my new husband's last name, but would I be able to or would it be weird to keep my ex-husband's name too for my kids sake?

Now, don't think I am already planning on getting remarried. That is the last thing on my mind. I just got curious after reading this thread.

I kept my maiden name as my middle name too. I have a friend from CT and she dropped her maiden name- she had never heard of dropping the middle name. I never liked my middle name anyway- sounds very 'country' when paired with my first name.

When I became a notary they had my full name on everything-

first middle maiden married

jinxed-- my SIL did that. She was divorced and kept her married name (that had a child) and remarried many years later and kept both names. She is a lawyer and that may have been a factor in her decision-- not confusing people on legal documents or something. But what I am trying to say it not unheard of.

I'm amazed by this thread. I thought EVERYONE who changed their last name to their husband's just added his surname onto the end. I've never heard of dropping the maiden name. My original family is too important a part of me to do that. I consider myself to have four names -- first, middle, maiden, last -- but I don't use my middle name legally.

BTW, I've lived in North Carolina all my life.

DW did this -- legally, she dropped her middle name and made her maiden name her middle name. She was changing her name to my last name anyways, so it wasn't any extra work. Her mom did the same thing, so I guess it's sort of a family tradition. :)

I combined my middle name and maiden name together and tacked on exh's last name. So now I have 2 middle names. It's a huge pain. I usually only go by my original middle name.

I kept added my maiden as a second middle name. I don't write the whole thing out though - I have 4 initials ALKA.

I was beginnning to think I was the only one who did this. I legally kept my maiden name as a middle name, so I now have two middle names (and 4 initials: JABW). My SS card reflects my full name. The problem I run across is that most computer systems are not set up for people in my situation. They will usually only allow for one middle name. In that case, I default to my given middle name!

My husband's family has never heard of this! They swear it must be a New England thing (they are from South Philly). They think I am crazy, so I am trying to find out what everyone else has done.

That's funny you thought it was NE thing, I always thought it was a Southern thing. Never heard of it when I lived in MI, but it's all over the place down here in SC..

I didn't even change my maiden name when I got married-but when DS6 came along, I did change it we could all have the same name...::yes:: I kept my given middle name, and gave DS6 my maiden name as his middle name..Confused yet???

Are any of you guys that now have 2 middle names Catholic?? I believe that Catholics also have a confirmation name in the middle, so technically, you could have 5 initials!!:teeth:

I dropped my maiden name and took DH's last name. I don't particularly like my middle name...but that's just what I wanted to do.

I plan on passing my maiden name down to my first born son (well - I BETTER have a son! heheh) as his middle name.

Nope, not catholic. lol. 4 names is plenty....I can't even imagine 5. My initials are MJPG. I wish I got rid of my married name when I had the chance (during the divorce), but I kept it so dd and I would have the same last name.
