WOC reserved seating

I was thinking of purchasing the World of Color Picnic with Reserved seating...for our visit in October.

Is it worth it? Or what do you suggest??

Well, the name can be a little misleading. By purchasing the picnic, you are getting a Yellow Fast Pass and that is it. No guarantee of a good spot or anything. It is the same Yellow FP that is given out for free during the day. You still have to line up at the same time.

Potential benefits: if you won't be arriving until much later in the day and won't be there when the free FPs are given out, obviously this could help you out.

You want the first show and don't want to hop over to DCA to get it in the morning, you don't have to if you buy a picnic.

You really, really want yellow.

Otherwise, I would say forget the picnic and grab the free FPs during the day. The picnics aren't super amazing or anything by themselves. So, you won't be missing anything.

This is why I decided to do the picnic for next Tuesday. I'm starting the day with MM at DL and finishing the day at DCA and didn't want to need to hop over real early in the day. Also, being a weekday in slow season, there is only 1 show that evening.

Be careful! There is no reserved seating. There is reserved standing.

Whether it is worth it depends. For most people it is no longer worht it.

We were there last summer and purchased the WOC dinner package. Was shocked to see that it was standing. Couldn't see well, at all. People stand in front of you. Was very disappointed. Show is amazing, though!

As we all learned last summer, with any WOC viewing location it is really important to be at a front rail those in front of you are less able to block your view.

We bought the dinner package. One thing I don't know, even after seeing the maps (both old and revised) is how many railing spots there are for PD. Is there just one rail that fits 20 people or are there 3 rails that fit 20 people? We've got our nearly 5-year old DD and want her to have a view. I feel like I'm at a race, but am nervous because I barely know the course.

While I haven't been to WOC yet (we're going in Oct), our son went last night. He got a blue FP and called me about where to try to stand while he was in the waiting area. I pulled up the WOC superthread and quickly, w/o me having seen the area in person and w/o him having the map in front of him, gave him a few options based on the ratings on the viewing map.

He got a rail position in the second grouping, basically where the "A" is on the map and later told us they saw everything except the really low stuff along the water.

He also said, even back that far, they got a little wet, so I'd watch for that if you move too close to the front.

Back to your comment about it being like a race. A few years ago I was doing the SF Marathon for the first time. With about 18 miles gone, they started alternating the runners in big bunches between a couple of different streets so they could open/close them for traffic. Of course, when I got to that point, I was one of the first to be told to go the other way, so I couldn't follow everyone else. I'm not fast; I don't LEAD races; I follow everyone else. But there I was, out "front" with no idea where I was going. A couple of other runners and I were laughing about that and had a feeling of responsibility not to get everyone behind us lost!

Good luck with the show. Our son loved it, although he said it was quite a time investment (getting the FP early, then the long wait before they let them to the viewing area, then standing there until the show started.

If you do the dinner package, I suggest doing it for the 2nd or last show of the night. It is less crowded. I did the last show the week of April 10th (2011) and after dinner, there was a specific area for the dinner packages (versus the picnic packages) to wait to be escorted to the viewing area (which was also sectioned off specifically for the blue tickets we had).

I just looked at HydroGuy's picture again and it looks like they changed it again? First the PD was big, then it was smaller but kind of zig-zaggy, now it's more compacted in the front? The zig-zag really had me confused. Looks like there are two railings that fit maybe 30 people each? Doesn't seem like it should be too hard to get a railing spot. Anyone know if the wet zone fills up before the back railing or vice-verca?

My son and his friend got there early with blue FP, but then his friend decided to go get something to eat. So when they started letting people into the viewing area my son had to wait (we were on the phone at the time) for him to come back. While he waited, he watched the bridge area fill up first, then the last couple of rows toward the right (toward the back).

So he didn't get in anywhere near the front of the crowd, but they did get a rail near the "A" on the viewing area map, although my son did let a small kid squeeze in front of him so he could see.

The second diagram (the one specifically about PD) has been in the OP of that thread since April - not sure last time you checked? The first diagram is new and I created that too to give more detail.

There is room for maybe 15-20 people at the elevated rail and maybe 20-30 people at the lower fron rail on the water. The first people into the PD area see the warning signs about wet zone below and refuse to go down there and decide to try their luck in the second or third row behind the elevated rail people. Eventually the later arrivers (within 2-5 minutes)decide it will be better in the wet zone than too far back in the elevated area and go down there. And then people pile into the lower wet zone area. Again this all happens within a couple minutes.

The critical thing is you really want to be one of the first few groups into the PD area. When I went with DS16 a couple weeks ago we were the third group and we got a great spot at the elevated rail.

If you are tall enough then the second or maybe third row is fine. If you have kids who are shorter you will regret not showing up early enough to get at the rail.

Also, there have been threads here lately about the people who let kids they do not know in front of them at the rail and the problems that caused. So be careful.

Guess I didn't look as closely at the second photo before. As the big trip get's closer, my entire perspecitve seems to be changing and different things become more meaningful. I guess the big map was all I cared about before, but now I need to prepare more carefully, so the closer picture takes on new meaning. Oh the humanity!!! LOL! Thanks HydroGuy.

The WOC Superthread linked earlier tells you all about this depending on your priorities. Go read it then I think you will have a better idea what you want to do.
