WOC and Fantasmic - saving "seats"?

I have read that some people save "seats" for these shows while the rest of the family continues to go on rides. Is this frowned upon or is this the norm? If it is ok to save space how do you do it? Would I need to bring in a blanket or something to put on the ground?

Great question, i'm curious about this one as well! Thanks for asking it.

For "F" many people just start early by putting a blanket on the ground and someone stays to "protect" their spot, but i have seen many times that other groups will start to infringe and as the show nears the CM's start making everyone cozy up. A lot depends on when you are going, how busy it will be. There are others more knowledgable about WOC.

Here is the WOC superthread for your enjoyment...http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2542717&highlight=woc

For Fantasmic many people do as Jack said above. There it's easy because it doesn't block a main walkway.

For the parades some people do, likewise for fireworks, when they set up thier stuff on the sidewalk/curb, because the pathways have to be left clear.

For WoC, it's totally different. You need a WoC Show Pass to enter the viewing area. When the time comes that people are let in you go in as a huge group and the vieing area fills up very quick. Once you have your spot you can let some people go in and out as long as they retain their Show Pass to get back in. It's very crowded though and not easy to do this.

How about before you enter WoC? I have a senior with me, so she will not be able to stand those 90 minutes before they open the entrance?
Can 2 people stand in line while kids & senior are seated somewhere else, or even in an attraction?

It is hard to say because it is hard to hold a WOC spot for someone for that long a time. It depends who is around you. If you are a larger group saving a spot for a smaller group then that might work. But a smaller group saving space for a larger group of kids and seniors is probably not going to work very well. Bottom line is I would not count on it working. Kind of a bummer because the show is so good.

It's not 90 minutes before they open the entrance/viewing area. What happens is your return ticket has a hour long window, and when you arrive before that window(which you should) you are lined up outside the viewing area. In total aim for about 15 minutes before the window, 75 minute wait in total.

In that case of the ticket in the picture, I would aim for finding the RED line at 7:45.

As far as staying together. Assuming you have a cell phone it should be easy to two people to hold the spot for two more. It does get crowded, so it may be better to all go in, establish your spot. Then let them leave. It would be real easy to ride LM, grab a snack or use a restroom. Just make sure you have your show pass to get back into the viewing area.

Thank you all so much for the great info. We are a family of 3 going during Spring Break (3-18-3/4) so it sounds like we will all just need to wait it out together. Now I need to figure out how to keep a 6 year old entertained for over an hour. :)

Hi, all,

I've read through the WOC superthread, but I still have a couple of questions.

We are coming to DLR in June. It will be our first trip in about 5 years, and we are looking forward to it!

My SIL will be joining us, and she has a bad knee so will be using a wheelchair because of the amount of walking. She can walk short distances and stand for a while with no problem, but the hour or more waiting for WOC would be tough.

Would we be eligible for the HC sections for WOC? Can we bring the wheelchair into the non-HC areas?

And a general question, do many folks just sit on the ground during the time between entering the area and the show starting? That seems like a long time for even able-bodied people to stand in one place!

Thanks for any advice you can offer me!

It is common for Fantasmic but frowned upon.

I wouldn't say it is frowned upon, especially in the seated section.
Now... what is frowned upon is leaving your stuff without at least one member of your party to hold the blanket. Upon returning, you will find that someone was kind enough to fold your blanket or hang it on the rail for you. :) Our experience was that about an hour before showtime, a Cm will go along and gather up unattended items to make room.
And infringing is totally the right word! We had a fleece throw to sit on and started out nice and stretched out. By the time the show started, we were in each others' laps. I don't know how it happened. Just one little movement at a time!

Yes she can go in the HCA zones. You still need to get WoC Show Passes to get you into one of the zones. In the HCA section are benches so you may be able to sit on them too. However the HCA sections get full and the benches are meant for people who can't stand so they get priority.

Yes you can sit on the ground as you wait. Some people do, and some don't.

When we went last summer we saw WOC twice. We had the blue section both times. The first time we saw it from the bridge, and were able to sit on the ground while we waited. The next viewing we were at the railing near the "wet" area. A few people started to sit, but then CM's came along and had everyone stand up to wait so people could be herded closer together to fit more people in. This was well before the show. It is a long time to stand and wait!

I can't speak for WoC but there shouldn't be any place saving issue at Fantasmic for your small party of three. I've seen quite a few families do it and IMO you don't take up that much space. It's when a single person saves a large space for a party of 8+ people (like laying out a King comforter) that some people in the crowd may start to get grumbly. ;)

JMO of course!

Now I got it! I was so confused, I thought I had to stay 90 minutes outside! I will have to get my MIL a wheelchair, there is no way she will handle that amount of time standing (she's 74, and never walks). We will be only 5, so we'll make do.
Thanks for clearing it for me.

First - I don't believe in 'saving' spaces - it's not my space - it's a 'space' and if someone shorter than myself is behind me I usually step back a few and invite them to a better view. It can get pretty serious in a large crowd and that's just no fun.
Anyways back to the topic -
Ok - I would never suggest this and it really was a joke - but I did find this useful when saving a space at WOC. We always stand in a back section that has good view but not in the thick of the crowd - one time, I had to run back to our room and get a jacket - I was going to tough it out and just be cold but my partner insisted and said the crowd wasn't that bad and he could 'save a space'. I ran to the room and got back pretty fast. The first thing I noticed was the look of defeat on his face like, "I tried, don't be mad" and he was spretty much surrounded. I didn't really care but I could see he didn't want to move back - when I got fairly close to him I blurted out, "Are you still GASSY or is that someone next to you"? The words came out much louder than I antcipated and sounded much more 'crazy old man' (no offense to the other non-crazy old men out there) than intended. He was confused at first but then caught on as the crowd parted like the red sea and we had plenty of space. So a few minutes of humilation and plenty of space for the rest of the show. I'm not saying it is right or saying to do it, but it is a fall back plan.

Make sure to ask about the HC seating for any who use wheelchairs, there are benches to see WoC from that seem to be pretty decent to see from. :)

As for F! it's fine to save a few seats but remember that others will want to squeeze in as well. :) We went to see F! once, we got there about 30-40 minutes early and it was already pretty full, but we were optimistic so we started looking for spots that might be open, we were not trying to take anyone's spot or infringe at all and the girls were small enough that they could have actually sat on our laps after we sat down. That was in fact the plan, DBF was going to sit with our older girl and the youngest was going to sit on my lap so we really only needed room for 2.5. lol There was a spot right under the rope that looked to be open so we asked the surrounding people if it was indeed available for us to sit in, they all said yes and so we popped under the rope and proceeded to sit. One group was happy to have us there but one lady started huffing and puffing and saying things like "I didn't put MY blanket for YOU to sit on, I have family coming" etc etc etc, she was being extremely rude. Keep in mind she had just OK'd us to sit there and we hadn't even fully sat down yet. There was plenty of room but she was being very rude. Turned out OK for us tho, the CM watching the walkway heard what was happening, came over and said "come with me, I have somewhere for you to sit" and took us to the VIP section where we had a great view of the show and altho we were still on the hard ground the girls were able to sit on their own and they were down near the front of the steps so they could see very well. :)

Ok that, paired with your s/n....... :lmao::thumbsup2:rotfl2:

And DBF is tall, he either stands near the back and makes sure that he's not blocking anyone else, or he stands directly behind me so we aren't taking up premium space near the front. lol We also (if we happen to be near the front) squeeze in as many kids as we can in front of us, I just wish others were as courteous. :)

I really dislike people saving space for others with a blanket spread out. Not only is the idea of saving space for people who aren't present while other people are present and waiting is distasteful to me (and just plain wrong), but the blanket is inevitably much larger than what is needed for people who aren't there. Then these people who are saving space, despite Disney cast members announcing that there is no saving space, act perturbed when crowds start "infringing" on what they perceive to be their space.

I believe that any empty space is there for the taking by anyone who is present. Those who aren't present can find available space when they arrive just like everyone else.

I agree with the bolded part. Often they save more space than needed. However, the idea of saving space doesn't bother me. I pay a lot for my time in the park. I can use it how I see fit. I choose to go on rides and shop until right before the show most of the time. I don't get a good view. That's the trade-off.

If someone wants to spend their time in the park waiting in one spot, that's their prerogative. If one or a few parents or party members are willing to sacrifice their precious park time so that the rest of their party can enjoy the show from a good viewing area, then they should be allowed. I think there is an unwritten etiquette rule that limits it to four or five spots for every person sitting waiting, though. One person holding seven other spots is too much. If it's to the point where everyone is standing, then I think you can save a maximum of one spot.
