Wnbc Hdtv ?

My DH broke down and asked me to come to the DIS with a question.

We are DIRECTV subscribers with network channels in HD. The NBC channel is WNBC (NY). On that channel, at the top of the screen, there is a strip. For lack of a better description, imagine a photograph dipped in liquid and the colors fade to pinks and purples.

We are fairly certian that it is not an issue with the television or settings. I checked NBC's HD page and see that the broadcast settings are the same as we view it. We've found no other channel where this occurs.

Are there others who experience this problem on this channel?
Is it an NBC/DIRECTV issue or does that channel look like that on all feeds?
Have you found a fix?

I know I can contact DIRECTV, but I'm a bit on the outs with them right now. And don't really want to deal with another endless call to trouble shoot and reset the receiver.

The channel hasn't always done this. I appreciate anyone who can verify that it's "going around."

I can tell you it is not an NBC issue. I don't have that problem.

The way you've described it does indeed sound like an issue in the television, specifically (perhaps) a lack of appropriate overscan. Hard-core video nuts hate overscan, but generally speaking, the picture should overscan at least 8-12 pixels. (The default on my tuner software is 16, incidentally, which is what a lot of folks object to... those extra 4-8 pixels.) It may not be overscan though -- it could be a physical problem with whatever technology applicable to your television. What type of HDTV do you have? DLP, LCD or plasma?

While not as likely as being an issue with your television, it is possible that it is a DirecTV problem. I don't know as much about satellite as I know about cable, but I do know that the satellite companies do a lot of nasty things to the video signal, including compressing the heck out of it.

It's plasma.
Ugh, DIRECTV. Guess I'll have to get over it and give them a call.
It's just weird since that channel is the only one that it happens with, and it's been a fairly recent thing, too.

I live in NY and have DirectTV HD watch WNBC HD news every day and I don't have that problem.

Our problem has been corrected.

The strange bar of faded color is gone. I'm out of town and spoke to dh last night. He said it was taken care of prior to the Sunday night game on NBC. We know it was there Sunday morning during the TODAY show.

He contacted NBC tech, via email, late Friday. Looks to be fine now. Still wondering what could have caused it.
