We checked in at the Wilderness Lodge Tuesday and found a HUGE safety issue for DGD age not-quite-two. While checking out out the balcony on the inner courtyard lobby-level room we found that DGD was able to stick her head entirely through between the last rail and concrete pillar. Those of you with little ones know that if the head can fit through, the rest will quickly follow. Fortunately, DD was watching her closely and was able to grab her before she tumbled to the concrete below, but it was a pretty scary way to start our stay.

Just wanted other parents/grandparents to be aware that it's a possibility, so be sure and check out your balcony when you check in.

Thank you for posting this warning. You have to be aware of safety issues, even at Disney resorts, you would assume everywhere was child proof, but that isn't the case. One of my main issues has always been the balconies at CR. It would be too easy for a child to climb up and over these, and many have posted pictures of this concern. Not everyone is out to sue Disney, and I'm sure the OP is not even thinking this.

oh no. you are going to sue disney right.

Wow....not sure where that came from.

Anyway....it's always a good idea to check out the entire room, inside and out, to be sure there are no safety issues. Kids vary so much in size, at the same age, that it's hard to make everything 100% safe for all kids, all the time.
I'm glad you caught this one before it ended badly.

I am a loving grandmother, and a concerned nurse who doesn't like to see children hurt.

If this is the kind of input (and it is, judging from a quick look at a few of your other posts) that you prefer to contribute to the forums, perhaps it would be better if you just continued your long time lurking.

And you, my friend, are an a**.
Ummm, avoidance of the word filter is a no-no. You may want to edit that one out.

:thumbsup2. Thanks for the heads up too! my baby has a big head so I'm glad hers won't fit:rotfl:. She gets it from her father:rolleyes1

Please also report this to Disney, it is always possible that they did not measure the railing correctly where it meets that pillar. They could easily add something in to prevent any accidents. They will never know if you don't tell them. :thumbsup2

That's a helpful heads-up for those with small children.

We did report it to the front desk, and they sent a manager to check it out. I think the issue is that the pillar is formed to look chiseled, and it narrowed as it went up; it was at that narrowed area that the space was wide enough for her to get through. We had a room down the hall, and that balcony did not have the same issue, so we switched rooms.

I agree many people are sue happy these days. What gets me is that nothing in this world is perfect and one must watch their children always. Some prefer others to make the world fit to them. There is no perfect childproof world. Never will be. Not even at Disney. Why would anyone not watch their child anyways. There are a lot more dangers at WL and Disney than mentioned here. There are pools all around resorts and lakes Watch out ohhhh!!!! and people you may not know too. Basically nothing is perfect or fool proof is all I am trying to get across

This had NOTHING to do with lawsuits, lol. I just want kids to be safe!

no it did not sound like encouraging suing and yes there are many people and some are professionals at suing. I saw a show on this awhile back where they caught people doing just that.

realizing this was not about suing but people should always be vigilant about their children regardless and I personally do not feel it is Disney job to make a childproof environment as on such a large scale would be impossible. I would not enjoy going to a place that was set up like a playpen
