Wk of Nov 19--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Goofyguy - Wow! That is some story. I'm sure Eric will be appreciative! I'm thankful that there are people like you on the course!!! Even w/ your stop and walking the last 10 miles, you still beat the tar out of my best marathon time :thumbsup2

WOW GoofyGuy! That was A wonderful thing you did! :thumbsup2 How awesome for Eric that you were there!

OK! Krista and Mel....I put my tree up yesterday too! We normally do it the day after Thanksgiving and have a real tree...my Moms parents own a tree farm in the mountains....but we knew we would not have another chance so we put up a fake tree!

Melissa - WTG on the 19 miler! I LOVE trail running!

Good job to all those that are getting in the steps. Keep it up - you are very inspiring!

Sorry I have missed so much. DH’s grandmother passed away and we had to make a trip to Utah for funeral. Did really well with runs during week, but missed LR last weekend. Headed out yesterday to do 16 and it was a story of the good, bad & the ugly. Pretty cold so ate oatmeal while rounding up another layer.
1 13:51
2 13:46
3 13:20
4 13:51 pop a few sports beans
5 13:50
6 13:51 eat half a breakfast bar
7 13:56
8 13:48 eat half a banana
9 15:09 change battery in mp3
10 14:38 eat rest of breakfast bar
11 14:07
12 15:22 take rock out of shoe
13 16:23 hit wall - hallucinating about hamburgers
14 18:27 face totally numb from cold/legs wobbly
14:25 Hobble home frustrated
Good: never gone that far and I pushed that wall back 4 miles before it caved in on me.
Bad: short a couple miles - need to back pace off so I can go the distance
Ugly: blisters starting on inside of feet
Going to have to do some big rah-rah pep talking this week, because the magnitude of going 12 more miles than yesterday’s outing is over whelming me. I really have to remember my goal is to finish 2 inches in front of the sweeper van and not to set any land speed records.

Have a great week and keep moving forward.

... you doze off, comfy and relaxed, in an ice bath. :p ... happened to me yesterday.

:teacher: Solicitation for tips on preventing nausea:

Anybody else get nauseous  during or after their runs? I was nauseous (and even "got sick") after today's 18 miles on the treadmill.

I don't know why... I'm not sick. Every now and then, I feel nauseous during workouts. I'm going to do some research on preventing this very undesirable consequence (electrolite imbalance, not enough food, not enough water??)

Please share your insights, and I'll post what I learn.

:woohoo: Keep up all the hard work, Team! :cheer2:

Teri, I found this article in response to your nausea. I guess the answer is "it depends" on several things and you need to try to determine how to best detect your situation.

Mike, it is truly a blessing that you were there. Sorry about your struggle to finish.

CJ, glad you got it done and that you have the insight to know what to do. You WILL do it!

Jen, good luck dealing with that back pain. It reminds me to make sure I get up in the morning to do my Pilates. That is what has helped me keep mine at bay some. Sorry you've got to deal with that pain and I hope yours lessens soon.

I did the 16 milesm on that TM. Yuck! It's done though. I did ok -- read I set the TM to the qualifing time and just struck out on the monotony. I watched 2 movies that were on cable and skimmed a couple of magazines that I wanted to toss out. Done!

Good Morning TEAM: :surfweb:

Mike - Congratulations on your marathon, but more importantly, congratulations on helping Eric. You are a truly special and unselfish guy. How lucky we all are to have you as a teammate. You're right, there will be another marathon for you, and now for Eric too.

CJ - Hang in there. You got your steps in, and you're making progress. I felt horrible on my 16 mile run, and then I switched my pace the next week and felt great on my 18 miler. You can do this.

Lily - I'm impressed with your 16 miles on the treadmill. WTG!!! You got it done! Movin' on...

Cam - How did your 16 miler on the treadmill go?

Amy - I'm glad you are posting more, and are doing well. No more injuries OK?

Jodi - How's your training going? Are you still on pace for Goofy?

Not much to report for me. Yesterday was a rest and recovery day. Yay! My princesses, DD5 princess: and DD8 princess:, wanted me to take them to Bagel Bin for breakfast. So I got up and had a "princess" breakfast while DW snoozed in bed. I never got my cold bath soak, but I did get to ice my leg a lot. I forgot to say, about my 18 miler on Saturday, I found a pace that really worked for me. I switched to 4R/1W instead of my usual 9R/1W. Wow, it felt so much better. The 4R felt really easy, and the 1W break came just when I needed it. So I think I found my pace for the marathon.

Another LR, another life lesson learned. DONT SHOP IN BOOTS ALL DAY THE DAY BEFORE YOU DO 10 MILES! DH, of course, said "duh" to that one. My feet started out sore. But it went better than expected since our high was 45 yesterday & it was windy. Garmin died at 8 miles but at that point my pace was 14:38 including warm up.

Dave-WTG :thumbsup2 on the 18 miles. And I've already checked too, only 2 more really LR's to go before taper :cool1:

Matt- :yay: Great job on the race!!!!!!! You are going to be flying at WDW!

Mel-I'm glad you posted a pic, I haven't figured out how to do that yet. I was planning on doing some decorating this weekend, but with shopping & wogging, I never got around to it.

CJ-dont focus on the total distance yet. That will get too overwhelming. Just stick to your current training program & you will do it!!!!

goofyguy-Excellent race report! I dont even know you, but I'm so proud of you :thumbsup2

Lily- Way to get those steps in! :woohoo:

Pat-funny story :lmao: I've never had a dog that wanted a bath, mine usually hide under the bed if they think they are going to get one.

Jen-take care of that back!

Howard- Good job getting that LR in!

:tiptoe: de-lurking...

I havent' worked out since last Monday...

LOVE Eminem on the mp3! :teeth:

In my defense (sort of), I am in the middle of a 13 day stretch at work.

...back to lurkdom until I am worthy of posting here.
:tiptoe:

Goofyguy - As the mother of an (almost) 15yo, let me thank you on behalf of Eric's mother. Your story brought a lump to my throat and made my eyes misty. :thumbsup2

taz4disney - very sorry about your loss. :grouphug:

Can anyone explain why the soles of my feet feel like I walked a mile on blistering hot sand after my LWs? :confused3 Yesterday I did 10mi and felt great - except for my soles. Could it be that my shoes are too loose and create friction as I stride? (On downhills I actually slide forward in the shoe.)

Anybody have tips? I'll be getting new shoes soon; these have 300+ miles on them. TIA.

Hi all!

I am making a Thanksgiving resolution to be here more! I feel bad when I don't post and so then don't feel like I can post...oh, I am crazy! :D But, I need the morale boost!

It is so good to come and read about all the long runs this weekend! Way to og everyone! Especially to those of you on the TM...I can't imagine!

MelR - WOW! My DD7 and I LOVED your race report. This is something I could so see us doing as she gets older. What fun! And you placed! Excellent!

Cam & Howard - So sorry for your loss. It sounds like Dave was an incredible man and will always live in your hearts.

Sunny - I am so glad you had a good doctor experience. I know what it feels like to not be heard and feel like you are banging your head against the wall with them. I hope you are able to work with him and find a solution. The book looks so interesting!

As for me, I did 16 miles Saturday. I felt like I was dying at the end - I walked an extra mile at the end because I read that was good for preventing soreness. I feel great now, but that mile about killed me! :D It was cold and I hurt so badly! But, the cool thing is that I finished a 25K, basically on Saturday...something I never imagined doing! It took me longer than I wanted...3:41, but that included my extra mile of walk...which was VERY slow! My biggest concern at this point is my migraines. It was pretty bad when I finished Saturday, and I will still have about 2 hours to go in the real deal.

So, I am having stress about having my longest run only be 20 and then three weeks later, doing 26. This works, right? I am doing the R/W plan from MFM. I REALLY need to have the "just finishing" goal, but that is so not my personality. Overall, I think I can do this. I can't believe it!

Here is to a great training week to you all!

Bekah

Oh yes, MUST get to Target to get one of those WISH ornaments...the tree goes up Friday! :Pinkbounc

Anybody else get nauseous during or after their runs? I was nauseous (and even "got sick") after today's 18 miles on the treadmill.
Teri - Just reading that you did 18 miles on a dreadmill made me feel sick! :teeth: You are a better runner than me...I coulss not go that long on the dreadmil!

Bekah - YES! You can do this!

I have already dealt with NC Medicaid this morning (and it is only 8 something!) :sad2:  :furious: So I am going to go run before I have to go into the office to deal with the stress...and I wonder why I have acid reflux! :confused3 I will be on the dreadmil so send some :wizard: for the poor dreadmill that gets me.

HI Everyone!

Goofyguy - For all the Eric's out there - thank you. I truely believe that our good deeds come back to us doubled and tripled. Sorry that the marathon didn't turn out the way you hoped. You are proof that there are angels among us.

But I have to ask - Why did someone let their 15 year old run a marathon without support? THat is WAY too young to be aware of the onset of hypoglycemia and all those other medical conditions that can lead to Eric's situation. Just makes you wonder.

I have figured out a way to avoid one of the long treadmill runs that I have to do this weekend. Yipee, I am going to run my neighborhood 3 times instead! Hills versus treadmill for 10 miles and the hills win. I must be insane.

We are almost there folks! Isn't it great!

Me too. I hope you figure out the nausea. I can not even imagine how long that run must have seemed.

Sorry, no time to take notes, so I know I'm skipping a lot of people.

Christa - Sorry about your stonker!

Kristi - Get back here soon! :cool1: (butt kicker ;) )

Cam - Congrats on the 16-miler! i was hoping to read more about it here, though. ;)

Krista & Steven, sorry about the steelers. You could have my Lions. ;) Thank for your condolences. It was close. I don't think we played our best, but I think OSU would say the same. I'm hoping of r a neutral territory re-match, but not holding my breath. Congrats on the LR Krista! I have oyu closer to 11 mpm!

Teri - OMG! I love the results of the ice baths, but falling asleep???? No way!

Mel - COngrats on a great run!!

Matt - COngrats!!

Goofyguy - SO glad dw is doi ng better. Way to go on being a great example of a true athelete!!

Bekah - COngrats on the LR! Please coome her emore often!

Kel - Shoes are definitely rnot right if they slip that much. I'd tie tighter for sure.

Bill - ROTFL on the cold. However, in the true spirit of this board, everyhting is relative and I'm sorry it was so cold for you. I get hot above 65 - 70 degrees adn I'm sure that's laughable to you!

solo - How'd it go?

Well, it was not too bad when we started Saturday. We ran an awesome path that went long a river and through some nice parks. I'll try to post pics later this week. It was calm and not too cool (low 40s) and no wind. SO, we dropped some clothing off after the first part of our run (about 4 mile mark). Well, it was one of those days where it got slightly codler as the day progressed, so I was a bit cold at the end. My right hand woudl not warm up. I got somewhat stiff the last few miles, but nothing terrible. We finished i at 2:55! Thats 10:56 mpm!!!!! I ocudl have pushed at the end but my legs were cold and I had a day of shoppingto get through, so I didn't. I don't know what last year's time was but I know it was over 11. Thi swas the first time I really felt like I was in better shape than last year, though. Last year, we were really hurtign the last 4 miles. This year, we could have gone further! My knee hip were ok, too, so life was pretty good!

Only 2 L-LRs to go everyone!!!!!!

Oh, and I have a new quote in my sig that's near and dear to my heart. Very appropriate too!

Mike – you are a hero! I am sorry you didn’t meet your goal, but I am sure Eric and his family will be forever grateful to you.

MelR– geez, you don’t train for a while and then you go out and pull off 19 miles with that awesome pace?!?!?! You are amazing! :lovestruc

CJ – I am sorry for your family’s loss. Sending a hug to your DH. I am sorry about the wall, but I am glad you have plenty of time before the big day to build up more miles.

Congratulations to everyone else who got out there this weekend! :woohoo:

Doing the 16 on the TM was not QUITE as bad as I feared. And I was pleased with my overall pace. Of course, it is much easier to maintain the pace on a TM than outside. I had a really awesome “moment” where my audiobook was finished and I still had about 3 miles to go. “Mountains” came on and it just inspired me so much that I jogged for almost the entire song at a 12:00 pace.

I broke the whole thing down into segments, since the maximum time you can program into the TM is 60 minutes and I figured that if anyone was waiting for a machine, I’d have to step off after an hour. But here is how it went:
First 60 minutes – overall pace 13:57
Second 60 minutes – overall pace 14:03
Half Hour (another potty break) – overall pace 14:09
Next hour – overall pace 14:36
Final 1.2 miles – 14:12 pace

Time – 3:47:02 – overall pace 14:11

I was hyper-aware of mental fatigue and while I think I stayed well-hydrated, I am definitely going to need to carry lots of sport beans, power bars, and/or cliff blocks on marathon day. I had NOTHING in reserve by the end and sat in my car for a while before driving home, just because I knew I was "out of it". The thought of going another 10 miles at that point was so out of the realm of possibility to me. Of course, that makes my next LR of 18 miles seem really intimidating, but fortunately it is 2 weeks away. I think on that day I'll start on the TM at 5:30 a.m and when I get completely bored, I'll drive to the fountain walk or the state park and make up the difference.

I am hoping to get in a total of 8 this weekend in Hilton Head. It is so beautiful there that I am hoping to just put on my Garmin and some great music and just start walking. We'll see how disciplined I really am, though. ;)

Oh, and I am really hoping my kayanos arrive today and that they are THE shoe for me.

ALmost forgot - SOmeone asked, mabe Bekah?, if teh MFM plan really worked. yes it does!! Dh and I di dit last year. Was 26.2 easy? No, but we did it adn the end felt pretty darn hot to us. SO, you should be fine. Just hope for not 80 degree weather! ;)

Cam - Way to go!! Great pace!!! Teh mileage will cme!! don't htink too far ahead. Lat year, we wanted to die the last 4 miles. Then, we flubbed 18, but we still did 20 well and finished the marathon. You wil be fine!!!

Good morning all. :sunny:

This has to be fairly quick as my friend's horse is not doing well and she asked me to meet the vet at noon since she can't be there.

Did eight miles on Saturday, that went like this:

13:33
11:52
12:55
12:37
12:29
12:30
12:51
12:20

I'm thinking 12:30 might be my target pace for the Half. :thumbsup2

I have a dozen or so questions for you experts but they will have to wait until I get back this afternoon.

Cam
- OMG! When I got to my mailbox Friday after work I got your package! I must call you later today. You are an absolute doll! :cloud9:

Oh Mel - We did almost the exact same run this weekend! And I am SO going to Target to get a bunch of those ornaments! Thanks for telling us about them! :teeth:

Susie - You're a funny girl! Draft off me?? :lmao:

Mike - Wow, what a sweetheart you are!

Amy - I keep thining of replues to you and forgetting to post! :guilty: I'm glad the injuries are going better. I really hop ethose blisters get better soon!!!!! You've tried powder in your socks, right?
