Wk Of Nov 11 - WISH Walking/Running Club

PandaDave Can I order my photo in a shadow box? Unfortunately, they don't give out medals at the Mud Hole Belly Flop championships, but they do have pork rinds in three flavors and all the chewing tobacco you can pack between your cheek and gums at the post event celebration. (I save the used chaw in baggies and label them from each event.) The only tough part is the judges seem biased against us Northerners, even when we create the biggest and highest splashes.

Good comeback Bill, we will make a country boy outta you yet. "I'm to sexy for my Overalls and RedWings", "I'm to sexy for my Pick-up", "I'm to sexy for my 12 dogs under the porch".

How's the back Bill?

Greetings -

Many thanks for those who sent me PD to get thru last night. I will spare you the torturous details, but my MIL made it painfully clear that my husband and I are quite boring. We spend all our time "going to Disneyland to ride the kiddie rides". And I spend all my time "cleaning that damn barn and working in that office". :headache:

Yup. That's exactly how it is. I took the high road so many times last night I think I earned an high-altitude driver's license. Although I was spittin' mad, I kept my cool.

I also got grilled my FIL on " exactly how far do you RUN?" He seemed to be skeptical that I was able to "run" at all. :sad2:

Anyway, ignoring all that....

Today is the second anniversary of my fist ever day of training! :yay: Looking at my training log I see on that day I did 30 min on the TM at 2.5 and I was thrilled with it!

This morning I did 45 min on the TM @ 1%, 25 of them at 4.0 and the rest at 4.2. It was really warm here but raining like crazy! I really really hope it's nice for Saturday. I have seven miles to do. I won't say "run" because we all know how boring I am that I actually don't "run" the whole thing.

Vic - OK I can understand not being able to keep up, but stick with us, will ya? Because I miss you when you don't post.

Terri - Oh no! I hope your mom is getting better. :wizard: "Cam crunches"

Steve - What a nice response to cquill! :goodvibes

Cecilia - Oh no! Not the flu! :wizard: Oh you poor thing.

OK, I'm going to pretend like I feel like working today. Oops! No, never mind. It's almost lunchtime! :upsidedow

Judy, Darlin, repeat after me, "I'm to sexy for my inlaws". Now look fondly in the direction they live and say in your best Goofy voice, "Bite Me", followed by your best Goofy laugh.

Happy Panda:hippie:

Hi all,

Reading about everyone getting ready for WDW in January is really making me wish I was running, but it is also making me more and more excited for the Minnie!

Also I just registered for my second marathon! Rock 'N' Roll San Diego - anyone else thinking about doing that one?

OK! I think I am going to go into taper mode!
Let me explain and please let me know what you guys/gals think!

B/c I was at WDW I swiched my 22 miler on 11/2 for nothing and moved it to the next week...11/9 (last week).

Clear as mud so far?:lmao:

Anyway, I did 20 on 11/9. THis week was supposed to be a 24:eek: miler but I was "just" going to do 20 or 22. But all my running buds in Charlotte think I should just go into my taper and do:
Tomorrow: (11/16)12 mile tempo run at race pace...with neg splits
Next week: (11/26)Slow 15 miler..at 9:45/10 MPM pace
The week after that (12/1......1 week b/4 marathon) 8 miles slow...9:45/10 MPM pace
12/8 - Marathon day!

THis would give me a LOOOONG 4 week taper...but they think I am very well trained for this marathon and doing another LR (back to back) would put me at risk for getting hurt.
FYI: I did 2 20 milers....1st one in 2:55 and 2nd one in 2:56. that is around an 8:40 pace.
And you guys know how much I run/bike...ect....:rolleyes1

So what do you think? Is this what I should do?

CAtching up from last week:

Helen - I hear teh DL Segway tour is awesome. You even practice in teh park. Hate to say it, but that may be your better choice.

Dana - Sorryyou had to cut your LR short. I can't do over 60 min on teh TM, so I can't imagine going as long as you did. We had a stonker fro our 18-miler before 06, but our 20-miler went fine. You will be fine!

OK, did 5 miles Saturday adn wante dto keep a 12 mpm pace, so that I could give my all in teh 5K. WIth seemeingly little effort, I did sub 11:30!! It was very hilly too. (Dave, across the highway from Kensington in Island Lake). We had a little more time than I wanted before teh race, but I didn't want to have to push my pace to get to registration in time. Plenty of tiem to change into dry clothes. It was a bit chilly, but a beautiful fall day.

ABout 60 people in teh race. There were walkers, so we were not last. One girl did a w/r. SHe had just started in Sept. I was so proud of her!

Started off wayy fast,a s it was predominantly boy cc runners. (Um, Scott, we're sub-9, think we could slow it down a little?) Well, my goal was sub 11 and we didi 10:47!!! WOo hoo!!! We averaged 11:10 fro teh eight miles. FOr teh first time since May, I feel like our 5 hour marathon goal may be possible!!

Had 2 more great runs this week! on for 45 min tonight adn then we'll do our 16-miler on SUnday. This shoudl tell us a lot about pace and how my leg is holding up. Has felt great lastely, though!

OK, now to start reading this weeks thread. :upsidedow

Hey all... 40 minutes on the TM last night and it was forced. I so didn't want to be doing that. Tonight is Bootcamp, I am kind of liking getting beaten down every Thursday!

Judy - OH dear! Tongue biting is a good quality with the in-laws. My MIL could care less about my running. She told everyone that I am doing a 10K instead of a marathon so now everyone thinks I am wacko for being excited about the race. I mean it's only a 10K... you know anyone can do that... right!!!

Carrie - YAH on getting the running back! I am so happy to hear that!

Oh... gotta run... lunch time.

Stacie
Bill: how's the cold?

It is a little better today. At least I don't feel like my head is about to explode into millions of pieces. I would still enjoy being able to breathe normally but I'll take my head not hurting instead. Tonights run is not looking very good right now. It may turn into a walk or possibly a nap on the couch instead. :rolleyes1

Bill

Christa - I am in no way an expert, but I honestly think you'll be alright. I also think that your friends are right, you are awesomely (is that a word?) trained for this race, you have put in 2 - 20 milers, along with your kick butt bike riding. I think that as long as you keep the distances in check and maybe throw in some nice Marathon pace miles in those runs that you will do just fine!! You are attempting sub 4 this race right?! I think you can definately do it!! And a 3 week taper will give your legs that extra amount of rest!!

Dana

Oh my....it's been forever since I posted here. :rolleyes1 So I finally delurk. Long story short is that last year my marathon training TANKED starting with a long string of injuries beginning with post tib tendonitis then achilles tendonitis and ending with a hip nerve injury that caused my training to stop after my longest LR of 16 Miles! :sad2: Sooo....I never got the long runs in...and never trained past Thanksgiving last year. I did finish the marathon thanks to my running partner (SCOTT!!! :goodvibes ) and lived to tell the tale. I guess I quit posting b/c it was so hard to face the possibility of not being able to run...and feeling sorry for myself...yada yada. Now this year...I have been keeping my journal but was afraid to jinx myself by posting LOL!

So what does a girl do who has a tremendously bad experience with her first marathon??? Umm....sign up for the :goofy:. Go figure ;). Made perfectly logical sense back in February. Not sure I'm all there!

Training thus far has been very good for me. I found that Pilates got me through the injury and helped me recover...so I decided to get my certification. I think that has helped carry me through the difficulties of marathon training this time around! I've run two Half Marathons since WDW 07...both were successful and injury free! :goodvibes I've modified my training this year and I only do 3 runs and 1 walk/run...currently one 6 miler, one 5 Mile tempo and the obligatory weekend LR. In adition, the day before the long run is my half distance walk/run (trying to maintain under 13 mpm). I also do two days of cardio XT...and between teaching and taking classes log about 6 hours of Pilates per week. Phew! So far that has worked for me. Like Craig...my body can't handle the punishment of lots of miles...so I'm just trying to keep the distances reasonable so I don't fall apart. Showing up healthy is goal number one this year. It stinks to run a marathon injured and sick. I've been keeping my LR pace just under 10 mpm and starting to get my short runs in the low 9s FINALLY! Not setting any land speed records but I feel pretty comfy in this zone. It's been a long journey back from injury land!

Goals for the Goofy: FINISH! Going to walk/run the Half and enjoy the experience. As for the Full...I plan to run it and hope to redeem my abysmal experience from last year. It is going to be grueling...but I want it to be rewarding too!

Thanks for listening. I will try my best to keep up with this thread. You guys are uber-chatty. Everyone is so inspiring and doing a fantastic job with their runs! Train happy Wishers :sunny:.

Hello

As with my partner up there...it's been a looonnngggg time since I've posted here on the events thread. I've been lurking and following many of your stories and successes...but for now, please allow me to do one big generic GREAT JOB to everyone!

I won't rehash a lot of what Amy said up there, I too completed the full in '07 along with two half marathons (ironic? I think not :rotfl: ) and am training for the Goofy this January. Ok, ok...maybe that should have read "I'm training to get those super secret cool medals that they are going to hand out this year in honor of the 15th running" ;)

My goals are the same (see a pattern yet?)...to FINISH. But I do want to have a ton of fun along the way...taking it super easy during the half and then shoot for a respectable time during the full.

I wish everyone the best of luck with their respective trainings and am looking forward to being more involved here with this thread.

...off to go prepare for todays wind-infused slightly chilly 5 miler!!

Have a good day!

I forgot to mention about the safety clinic I went to last night at my local running store. Mostly stuff I knew, but they also had these two guys that just about beat each other to death. We went over some moves, but seriously I'd think you have to take their class on a regular basis to automatically do what they were showing us in a situation.

One thing I do know, I gotta lose the headphones. I tried it a few times but went back to them. Last night they showed how easy it is for someone to run up behind and use your headphones to strangle you with. It was quite an eye opener.

So that's a cheery thought about the headphones, Shan! :scared1: I always worry about keeping the volume down so I can hear traffic- didn't think about this problem. I probably need to end my dependency on the iPod and just save it for the TM.

Did 5 miles outside after eating Thanksgiving lunch at DD's school. For those of you running on Thanksgiving, I'd recommend running first. I made it, but it was SLOW. :rolleyes1

Hope everyone is doing well!

Wow, that is scary about the headphones. I know I do try to keep the volume down low, but there have been times when I have been startled on the rail trail when someone passes me. I never thought about the headphones being used as a weapon against you.

No time to read through all the posts. This week so far 5.5 miles on TM Tuesday, 4 miles TM Wed and will be going to pump class tonight and try to get in a couple more miles before class.

OK...so I wanted to just catch up with a few of my old events thread buddies!

Carrie! GREAT job on the race! I know you've been battling the injury bug this year. Sounds like you are in great form now!!!

Jen in GA....Wanted to post that your 5K time was SMOKIN' last weekend! Total envy of the speed. GREAT effort out there....you should be so proud!

Shan...did you ever go for that pilates class? :) And hey...that is terrifying what you learned in that class. I'll never look at my iPod the same way :guilty: .

Cindy...RnR SD! OMG...was hoping to do that one LAST year but the injury sidelined me! I can't wait to hear how it goes. I really plan to run that one someday in the not too distance future. Just not this year unfortunately. I just ran the RnR San Jose and in the spring did the Country Music in Nashville. those races! They are so well organized...and great support along the course! Congrats on signing up!!!!

Cecelia...sorry to hear you're sick :(. I had to cut my run short yesterday. A stomach bug just snuck up on me and I've been kind of laid out all day. Ugh! HATE missing training. I feel like i'm losing my mind today. I really hope you recover quickly!!!!

Judy...Ugh...the in-laws  . Does your FIL work for Pearl Izumi by any chance??? ;)

Um, yes Amy...I forgot to tell you that I signed us up for all the Elite series events in '09 ;) Talk about medal hoggin' :rotfl: :rolleyes1

Christa - I think you should be fine w/ a 4 week taper!

Nothing going on here. Boy is out of school next week, so nothing will be going on then either. I did do an 8 mile run today w/ some big hills. Still sore from the 17 1/2 hrs of adv. race. I did start a weight lifting program AGAIN!! Maybe I'll stick w/ it this time. I would like to do that 50k this year w/o a TON of knee pain.

Cecelia - I'm so sorry to hear that you have the flu. I hope you get better soon. Your dr. can give you some anti flu meds to shorten it if you are not very far along into it. At any rate, get better soon

Hi guys - I got another 4 miles in today over lunch. It was so nice on the pathways - I have to eat up the sunshine before the snow really and truly moves in. I ran it in 42:57, so just a bit slower than yesterday's time, but I had slightly more consistent mile splits.

Tomorrow is a rest day, then it is 6 miles on Saturday and 12 miles on Sunday. This Saturday is the Ryan Shay 5.5 Mile Memorial Run in your hometown. It is a virtual race in honour of Ryan, so I'm running 5.5 miles for him, then the last 0.5 miles for me.

Another virtual race is 8 on the 8th. You can check out the link here in case you are looking for a little bit of extra motivation:

On a sad note I've had to quit curling. Work is absolutely insane right now and I'm going to have to spend most of my weekends at work between now and Dec 14th. Between that and running I barely have any time left at all, so curling unfortunately had to go. I am so going to need my Christmas vacation....

. . .

I did the RnR half in VA Beach this year and the whole weekend was a blast. I agree with you about the organization and support - I would definitely recommend that race to anyone. Finishing on the beach and being able to walk out in the ocean after the race was great. And you bib gets you into the music events all weekend - including the 3 headliner concerts.

Um, yes Amy...I forgot to tell you that I signed us up for all the Elite series events in '09 ;) Talk about medal hoggin' :rotfl: :rolleyes1

I was thinking that since I am doing the full in June, I might have to sign up for one of the fall halfs - just to get a third medal (or maybe both the VA Beach and Philly halfs - the Beach to Bell Medal is pretty cool)
And, now that they are adding another marathon in San Antonio, I bet they are going to have to come up with another heavy medal :rolleyes1

Hey guys---unfortunately, I haven't been able to keep up with the thread, but I have been training this week!!!!! This is the first week in awhile that I have gotten in 3 workouts during the week, and they all went great!!! My knee has been a little sore the last week and half, so I started wearing a knee brace and bought new shoes, and low and behold...no more knee pain!!!!!! :cool1: :cool1:

Tomorrow is a rest day before my 17 mile LR this weekend!!! I can't wait!!!

Keep up the good work!! I am going to catch up on the thread later on tonight!
