Wk of May 18 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Craig - Wow.....

Pat - congrats! That is really a cool idea.

Duckie- bummer about the crash and picture loss. Sounds like you did manage to save most of them.

Mel - We've got a one bedroom at OKW for marathon weekend so willing to offer up the space for ice cream! Don't make my own but sure enjoy eating it!

Ang - WTG!

Jeff - sounds like nasty stuff. If killing crops you know it's gotta be damaging to ones health.

Big Hello to everyone!!

As for me, moving better today. Getting up and down is easier but twisting and bending are still nasty. We're going camping this weekend and were supposed to do a 2 day bike event. Appears Patrick will be riding and I'll be reading. It's depressing as I was really looking forward to this but can't risk trying to do 30 miles and making it worse. There are far too many other things I want to do over the next couple months.

So what's everyone got planned for the long weekend?

ANswering Liz's question, I am runnign teh MAckinaw Bridge! Yay, one of my favorite littel races, and I do mean little. Nothing like a sunrise adn a hot catered breakfast, though! :)

Craig - I so WISH I was with you! If I ever get there, must take you and Martha with as my tour guides!

Jen - DOn't you love teh yellow coating on everything. Sadly, we'vve been waiting fo rthis. lol about dd. Glad you are ok fo rnow. ;)

Pat - COngrats! Woo hoo! Hey with my OT this week, I have an extra 8 hours too. lol

Liz - Hope you are better soon!

No workouts to report, worked late yesterday. Just emans more time off in teh future, though. SHoudl eb cool runnings tonight.

DUckie - :grouphug: Losing pix is the worst! :guilty:

Off to Mel's party......(in my dreams)

Whoops. Forgot to post earlier, but I did Days 1 & 2 of Week 3 (C25K) this week. I'm going to hit the track and do Day 3 tonight. My shins were sore all day yesterday -- so glad it was a Rest Day! I'm afraid I may be developing shin splints, but with Race for the Taste coming up, I just can't afford an injury! I was SO glad to wake up relatively pain-free.

With Couch to 5K, is there a good reason to have 2 rest days at the end of the week? I'd like to stick with an every-other-day schedule if my body can handle it. I'm really enjoying the program (so far!) and realized I can finish a bit quicker if I skip that second rest day at the end of every week. But if this is a mistake, I'll follow the program to the letter instead. What has your experience been?

Oh thank you for sharing that with us Craig! How incredible that must have been. Lucky lucky you!

ksoehrlein - I can't speak to C25K, but some programs have two rest days so that you run on the same days of the week. I would think that one rest day should be enough unless you are nursing an injury.

Nothing exciting to report. It's nice and quiet around here for a change so I am catching up on almost 6 weeks of paperwork. I haven't written a ministry report since April 14th. Next week the kids will be out of school and then the real fun begins!

I'm glad you asked this. I would rather run every other day, with my Yoga on my off days. I haven't been adhering to the 2 rest days with the C25K and wonder if I was making a huge mistake. My history has been if I take off more than 1 day in a row, and not nursing a injury, I tend to get lazy. ;)

Aloha Jeff: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson? I love him--he always give 100% ;) , just like you. (Seriously, he cracks me up.) Sounds like Les is his only little cloud of VOG. (Btw, the VOG you did show us is pretty, if that's any consolation and so you don't think I'm insulting Les.)

Amykab: I'm glad your DD is feeling better and that you are too! I'm so impressed that you're thinking in terms of fueling and hydration. That's some pretty serious training you've got going on.

Amy: So, if your humor is lame and sophomoric, what does it say about that I laughed out loud? You know what would get me on board that Running 50 marathons/50 states bus? Having celebrity marathons hosted by, oh, say Patrick Stewart, Anderson Cooper, Dave Navarro. Hey, I say throw Kenneth Branagh, Avery Brooks (Sisko from ST: DS9), and Steve Buscemi in there (never said my taste was anything but, er, eclectic) and I'll be a roadie for sure. Of course, I don't think my little crushes will cause quite the stir in these parts are yours has! :rotfl2:

Stacie: In my best on-key sing-songy voice: "Monday morning you look so fine..." :rolleyes1 Maybe you just need to sign up for more races, get more awards!

Carrie: Yoga on the beach?? That sounds wonderful. Maybe they'll make a video of you all, because isn't a beach setting one of the conventions of the instructional yoga on DVD-genre? NOW I get your main office/parents conundrum. Oh, I'd be commuting if I were in your shoes. (And if your parents were my parents...) About your Mackinaw Bridge run; I'm going to ask my dad if he's going to be there, filming/broadcasting the event for the local news channels. (He operates a remote satellite truck.) Wouldn't that be cool?

Leana: Star Trek experience? I didn't know Vegas had that?? Beam me up, straight to Quark's Bar. P.S. Pared back is not quite the same thing as taking a rest, but thanks for trying to distract us. :rotfl2: Oh, and Happy Upcoming Birthday!!!!

Scott: :worship: For all your posts that make me laugh out loud. That's pretty much every post. I need to catch up with your blog, but I'm expecting something outrageous there, too. (Be warned. My expectations are sky high! Maybe some before, in-progress, and after pics?)

Jeanne: Shout-out to another Mole watcher! Be seeing you. (That's a gratuitous reference to The Prisoner for you speculative fiction/sci-fi fans.)

Morgan: Dang job, getting in the way of you maintaining your cultural literacy! Don't you feel, *cough, cough* that you're *cough, cough* coming down with something? Maybe something that only the Wii Fit can cure? (Guilty confession--I've not seen any of the Indy movies in totality. And am planning on seeing this one!)

Liz: I remember that commercial, and I loved the spoof of it in Airplane! I'm so glad to hear you're moving better and that you're riding the smart road to recovery, even though it means no biking. Better to take it easy now and have an active summer than to risk further injury.

Ms. Duckie: So sorry to hear about your MacBook and the pictures. I'd be despondent. I hope your buddy feels better and all is not lost. But in news that lightens all our days, I am irrationally fond of Chunky Monkey, particularly since Scott's ice-cream personality test evolved. Bananas, nuts, chocolate....all my favorite food groups and very descriptive of my slightly-askew nature.

Mel: What a WO week you've had! (What, pray tell, is pre-pilates?) Wait, did you say ice-cream party? And suggest there was HOMEMADE ice cream involved? I'm so in!!! Let's plan this somehow. And Scott's got the bar/lounge scavenger hunt. And isn't Dennyha floating the idea of an Illuminations desserts party? Sorry folks, I'm not going to be able to run, there's noshing to be done!! :dance3: (Or, as Aloha Jeff says, maybe I really do need to "run to eat.")

Pat: That Poker Walk, especially in light of National Employee Health and Fitness Day, sounds too cool. Oh, and congrats on winning. 8 hours PTO. What are you going to do with that? Sounds like another day at Disney to me!! Pat, strike that. I like Bill's suggestion better.

Bill: You are brilliant, have I told you that? Gotta love someone in support of creative financing of the ice-cream party. I'm sure Pat wouldn't mind. ;) I assume Billy and Timmy wouldn't be opposed to such festivities, either?

Jen: I'll bet your DD7 has all the makings of a great P.I. How are you going to get away to your next Disney event? (Which is...)

Megan: WTG with your 3 miler! And it sounds like you're not only feeling good about the running about the training! :woohoo: As to classes, we belong to a FC. But when we moved here, we asked for passes to various FC so that we could get a feel for them; usually we were allowed to take the classes as well as use the equipment. So you might want to go around to various places and sample their offerings. (Sort of like the free food at grocery stores. Hmmm. I think it's time for a snack.)

Ang: (I'm shifting to call you Ang, as I think it will be clear when I'm talking to you and when I'm talking to Angie.) Nope, I'm a newbie to the running thing. I just talk a lot. :upsidedow And I have the benefit of DOOD's years of knowledge to draw on. Now, if I only had his speed. CONGRATULATIONS on 20 minutes of running. That's such a milestone!! :cheer2:

Craig: I loved your icing tip, and the peas sound like a good low-tech/cost solution to some of the athletic packs I've seen. And your run sounds beautiful, awesome (in the awe filled, non Valley-girl way), and meditative. I'm happy for you. P.S. I know you'll check this thread rather than my RR, so I thought I'd say that DOOD wants to have a fun (vs. PR) run for the January marathon, so if you're looking for someone to run with in addition to your regular group or for a PR.... He's the serious football fan in the family, with me tagging along (running along) behind him.

ksoehrlein: Are you doing any shin exercises along with your training? I think this month's Runner's World features some. (Anyone confirm?) It is better to take rest days now than to risk injury, of course, so I'd recommend some time off now. Following RICE, of course. As for C25K, I think everyone I know has tailored it to fit their own needs. My impression of the program was that it was set up for a weekly progress, which provided some consistency and which might fit in nicely with people's work lives??? Just guessing, really. I know I did a MWS program as it fit in nicely with my other training plans. If a MWFSu/TTSa two-week rotation works for you, go for it. That said, remember your shins!

As for me: This was my first day running since Sunday. It was a short little thing, as I didn't want to exacerbate my blisters, and I took it to the TM for the same reason. My legs, knees, shins all felt good--and I credit all the XT and stretching for helping me with these issues! I'm definitely making a well-rounded active lifestyle a priority! :thumbsup2 My HR was a little elevated, so the run was mentally harder than I would have liked, but not horribly so. All in all, I'm pretty happy with the progress I've made since January. Now I need to think what I'm going to work on, specifically, between now and marathon training.

And this one's not about me, but an announcement: Pittsburgh has committed to bringing back its marathon in 2009 (I think the date is May 3rd), now that Dick's Sporting Goods has agreed to a 3-year sponsorship deal. Okay, so it's hilly here, and I don't know how or if they're going to work around that, but I do know the course is going to go through some lovely neighborhoods, including the university-oriented Oakland and my soon-to-be home of Squirrel Hill. Here's the story, so you won't think I'm making it up.

So, if anyone wants to do Pgh next year, here's my offer. Not offering to run it, although I assume I probably will, dependent on work schedules, etc. I will take any WISHers participating, however, on an ice-cream tour of my home! (Unless, say, you wanted to see the inclines, or the Carnegie Museum or Art, or the Cathedral of Learning or some such nonsense....:rolleyes1)

So, for you Janet Evanovich fans, I think the Rock could make a passable Ranger. And DD15 thinks the guy from that vampire show on Friday night could be Morelli.

Oh yeah!

This morning I did my first run in Paris, and it was pretty amazing. I tried to take it easy, but as I covered the miles and the monuments and buildings came into and out of view, I appreciated the layout and beauty of the city even more. At one point I thought to myself, "this is sort of like running around EPCOT, because I keep seeing the Eiffel Tower  .

:lmao: :lmao: :lmao: Have a wonderful time!

:dance3: (Or, as Aloha Jeff says, maybe I really to need to "run to eat.")

So did anyone say we actually have to RUN during marathon weekend?

After several weeks of great training, this week has been mostly devoid of any activity. I have done one Pilates workout and one upper body, and DH and I took the dog for a 3 mile walk, but running is conspicuously absent. And Saturday's group run is a 5++ mile (their words, not mine!) hilly route that kicked my a** last year. I was, however, sick as a dog that day, so I'm looking forward to enjoying this run.

Hi...I met Debra at the RiteAid Cleveland Marathon on 5/18 after I fell in love  with her shirt!

My name is Paula and I had gastric bypass surgery 11/2006...I've lost 99 inches and 108 lbs with my new tool (I'm down to those last 10 stubborn pounds). I've gained self-respect, a ton of new friends, and a possible "transfer addiction" to wogging (fast walk/slow run combo). I did my first 5k in early Sept07 and placed 93rd in a pack of 93 but completed in 45.36 as the only walker. I then walked a 10k portion of the RoadRunner Akron Marathon as part of a five person relay team. I finished in 1.29.30...our team finished 493rd of 507!

So far this year, I've finished the 10k walk at the RiteAid Cleveland Marathon in 1.33.25. :woohoo:

For the RoadRunner Akron Marathon, I am focused on having a relay team completely comprised of postop bariatric patients and plan on taking the last 12.2k leg as my own...I can't wait to wog into the stadium and meet up with my teammates!! :grouphug:

I'd love to try a 13.1 "stroll" after that!! :lmao:

Paula "Dream, Believe, Achieve!" :cheer2:

:welcome: Paula!
What an inspiration you are! :worship:
With everything you've already accomplished, you will have no problem doing a half!

I have been too busy lately to get any training in. I did manage to get 3.5 miles in on the TM on Tuesday. Today I signed up for a 5k on Monday so I have to get out tomorrow and do a run (good thing I have a half day as the afternoon today was pretty rainy)

Welcome Paula - great story about how you found WISH - congrats to you on the weight loss

Hello Fellow Wishers...Here is some catching up I have tried to accomplish:

Paula: :welcome: Glad to have you on the team, you have a great attitude. Keep up the good work!!

BigVic: haha, I see your bananas are dancing. I don't thnk I could give as good of a massage as my "killer" massage therapist. He is a tough dude.

Michelle: Good job working on the swimming!!(especially during the summer.) It's funny but I prefer to swim under the water.

Carrie: I like the idea of "gentle" yoga, maybe more my style.

Jeff: Nice VOG photos!!

AmyKab: Glad to hear things are getting better.

AmyBeth: I know "THe Rock" as Dwayne Johnson who played football for the University of Miami Hurricanes Football team while I marched in the band!! Now that's a small world. He was on the 1991 National Championship team!!

Debra: Not too sure about the comment of Scott and I with massages involved. There might be someone who wouldn't approve of such a thing and not sure if Scott cold get a plane flight down here with his hectic schedule. I agree that AmyBeth is very good at getting us to do our CORE work. Thanks for the offer of the House Ice cream tour!! :)

Scott: I am up for the the running/walker desert coordinator. I had the same thing tonight. (I really needed it, that's my story and I'm sticking to it!) WOw, that story about the dark creepy woods, was very scary. I think you need to give a rating before you start.

Leana: I think the heat is here to stay!! Yeah, today it rained!!! I could hear the grass and trees take in a cleansing and collective breath!!

As for me: hmmmmm. Today was not an easy day. We are down a person at work the the last two days. Today was busy. Then after the last patients of the day I had my job and the other girls job to do. I had to trace 5 cephlometric xrays and then gather up all the retainers models, print out their prescriptions and bundle them out for the lab to pick them up. I was at work for an hour past normal. I then changed my clothes and got in my car. As I am pulling out I get a call on my cell telling me not to get on the highway because it is backed up to the on ramp. SO, I go the only other way and that is a bit backed up. Also its been raining (sprinkling) since about 3:30pm. I get to the park and its not raining. I decide that even though I am tired and exhausted to just get it over with. I got in 3miles with a decent pace of 14:05. Got home and took a shower, ate alittle something something and had my ice cream!! YUM YUM!
-Hurricanes won tonight's game at the ACC Championship.:cool1:

Congratulations, Paula, on all your recent accomplishments and.......:welcome:

Duckie: So sorry to hear about your laptop harddrive and your photos :sad2: !!!, Big suggestion - get an external hard drive and use it to store your photos!!! You could also use it to back up your laptop's hard drive.

:welcome: Paula!

I just got this email from one of my Galloway group leaders. Don't think she'll mind my sharing. It's a great story of how walk breaks work!

Finally, I have to share with you my husband’s race results from the Green Bay, Wisconsin, marathon this past Sunday. He’s in a faster Galloway group and has been running 5’s and 1’s (5 minutes of running and 1 of walking). His best marathon time was 7 years ago at 4 hours and 38 minutes, but he had several marathons since barely finishing under 5 hours and even one about 5 hours and 30 minutes. He has been doing speed work because he really wanted to set a personal record. He had planned on running 5’s and 1’s until he heard Jeff Galloway talk about running marathons in under 5 hours by running 1 minute and walking 1 minute. Reluctantly, since nothing else had increased his time, he decided to run 3’s and 1’s (like we do). The result? He set a personal record of 4 hours and 34 minutes (and that was even waiting for about 4 minutes for a train to cross over the marathon course). His experience is proof that putting in walk breaks (even more frequently than you think you need) will help you finish faster!!

I'm not sure of his exact age, but Whit's somewhere in his 60's, and like Randy said, he's in a much faster group than we are for our Saturday runs. Just thought it was a really nice story!

Jackie

I'm hopping on the treadmill for W1D3 in a few minutes. My plantar faciitis had been acting up so I wore my orthotics today. I don't think I can run with them though. Be back in about 20 minutes!

Jackie - Thanks for the little blurb. I did a run2/walk1 yesterday with my dog because my allergies were wild and I felt rotten. And I was pleasantly surprised with my pace. And BTW, the Green Bay Marathon (GO PACK!) is about 90 minutes from me. I ran it last year and it was very nice. I was planning to do it again this year but Pat coerced me into running Madison this coming weekend.

That felt great! I was able to comfortably increase the speed of the jogging sections. We'll see how I feel when I start next week! Thanks everyone for your encouragement this week!

My training report:

I went out for a 6 miler today. Not the usual pace due to the heat and the VOG. Good enough to get in my 60 minutes of homework.

No official clinic on Sunday due to the three day holiday weekend, so we'll be running at 6:30 am when it's much cooler. We normally run at 7:50/8:00 am when the Doc finishes his weekly talk.

Happy Aloha Friday everyone, enjoy your weekend.

Good morning WISHers!

Hoping everyone one is have a great Friday morning.

Taking today off, just because.

Out for 3 miles last night. Nothing significant to report.

To our new teammates - :welcome:

Everyone - Have a great weekend, and keep up the great work!! :thumbsup2
