Wk of Mar 11--WISH Walking/Running Club

Jim,

How close was your maximum heart rate to the 220 - age formula? Also was this a study or did you need to pay for it. I would really like to have this test, but the cheapest I found was $150.

Thanks,
Scott

I paid $100 for it. It was a true test, hooked up to the computer via vacuum hoses while on the TM. My max heart rate got to 185, but I tapped out early. He said there was no real reason to go beyone the AT except for my knowing what the max was.

Well, I'm just glad HM won't be closed when we go for the Minnie! What are they going to do in there anyway? Dust? Hey, maybe they can get Vic to do it! :rotfl:

:rotfl: That was TOO funny!

Paul - CONGRATULATIONS!! :yay:

Kristi - Good for you for finishing the walk. Hope you can figure out where the energy is going!

Carrie - Feel better!

Kevin - Looks like a great start. Hope the weather stays decent.

Martha - Your run was awesome! Enjoy your solo weekend - you could come down here and run a 5K with me; no one seems to be doing any 10Ks here any time soon.

Jennasis
- :welcome: I'm doing the half for the first time too. And I love it when we get new WISHers from NC! (I'm originally from Winston-Salem but now in Raleigh.) As for a pedometer, most of us use some version of the Garmin Forerunner - a little more expensive than a pedometer, but gives you a lot more information. It keeps track of your mileage and time - if you ever use one, you'll be hooked for life!

Thanks for all the congrats on my mile this morning. I've been on a high all day - sounds like a really small thing unless you know what it's taken to get there. I told DH tonight, and his comment was "I thought you'd been doing that all along." Apparently my DIS friends are more aware of my training than he is? Anyway, I couldn't wait to get off the TM this morning to share. Thanks for all the support.

Jackie

Paul - Anastasia is gorgeous! Best of luck to you and your family!

Jennasis - Welcome :welcome: to the group.

Terri

Wow! It seems we are surrounded by celebs here. Dave the radio star (now don't go getting all Howard Stern on the poor lady), Kristi controlling the fate of a million school children with weather related school closings on TV, and Jen the video star. Such talent!

Paul - Your daughter is beautiful. Congratulations again. She doesn't happen to be a taper-baby does she? I'm a little nervous about that phenomenon.

Dave - Have fun with the race. With your pace lately you may want to be sure to stick around for the awards at the end.

Well, I'm just glad HM won't be closed when we go for the Minnie! What are they going to do in there anyway? Dust? Hey, maybe they can get Vic to do it!

Judy - You always say something that makes me laugh!

Good news and bad news for my run last night. The good news was that the weather was so nice I got to try out a new pair of running shorts. The bad news is that wearing running shorts (considerably shorter than shorts I normally wear) incites fits of uncontrollable laughter :rotfl2: and more than a little ridicule :sad1: from my DD's. We'll save the whole commando discussion for another day :scared1: .

Have an excellent day everyone.

Hi Everyone-

I have been AWOL. I just found it very difficult to read about everyone else's training when I was completely sidelined.

That and this whole building a house thing has been a major time consumer. My dh is driving me nuts - every waking second is spent looking at cabinet choices or countertops or flooring etc etc etc ad nauseum. I keep telling him - we don't have walls yet this can wait!

Anyway, my left leg is still not healed completely. At least now it only hurts when I run instead of all the time. I am going to a PT next week but he insisted on rest until then. Staying still is making me insane.

So between the manditory rest and the house building decisions I am a complete and utter witch. um, actually, that is a little harsh on witches. This is the first time in 20 years of being a non-smoker that I actually wanted a cigarette. well the first time it was bad enought to consider buying a pack.

I now have even more respect for those of you that managed to survive injuries without committing a felony or being institutionalized.

Dave - Wow, way to go speedy! Guess you will be finishing WAY ahead of me next year!

Paul - She is beautiful. It takes an absolutely incredibly beautiful baby to hit this old lady's maternal chords but for a second there I thought "its not too late to have another." Ack! Oh she is sweet - lucky you - enjoy her.

Why does it always come down to speed work.

I dunno, but I might have to post that quote in my siggie.

With my luck a light fixture will fall off of the wall and hit me in the noggin. ;)

Ahhh, so much to catch up on! I will try my best! Sorry I haven't been around much lately, but I have been sick too. I have been running though and I'm very happy to report that I ran outside for the first time since the marathon yesterday and it was GREAT!!!!  At first I wasn't going to run because I was tired, had a major headache, and was incredibly congested. I planned on spending the evening on the couch. Then I said to myself, "Krista Erin, it is 80 degrees today, when is the last time you ran when it was 80 degrees?? Get out there and enjoy the weather!" So I did. Hines (my dog for the newbies) and I headed out, I couldn't decided between 3 or 4 miles, but when I was in front of my house at 3.38 miles and Hines was dragging behind me, I decided that was enough for us. It was so great to be outside again and thankfully I didn't have any IT band pain at all. I was really nervous about that first run outside, but it was fine. The only thing that was slightly disappointing was I was so sure I would have to reign in my inner race horse because I haven't run outside for so long and I didn't have my TM to pace me. Well, my pace was fine, not too fast, which was good for my IT band, but I would have like to have been able to fight the pace more. I am blaming the warm temperatures!

Paul--She is beautiful!!! Look at those cheeks!! And her color is so good. I come from a family of slightly jaundiced kids, so to me newborns are yellow. ;) Congratulations!!

Kristi--Good job sticking with it and getting your steps in when you didn't feel like it. Get to the doctor soon please, it sounds like something is not right.

Carrie--Hope you are feeling better soon!! :wizard:

Dave--You know I have a degree in Broadcasting and I was on the radio on my college's station. For the right price, I would be happy to share some pointers with you. ;) Good luck, Speedy Gonzalez!!

Mike/Optimator--I bought Stephen some running shorts for Christmas that are rather short. He hasn't been brave enough to wear them in public. You know when you buy things on-line, a 4 inch in-seem looks much longer on a ruler than in real life! :rotfl:

Jen--Don't ya love those training videos? I have been in a couple for my work. The last one I did I had to pretend to be a sorority girl wanting to rent a sno cone machine. It was NICE!!!

Welcome to all the new people!! I love how our group is growing!!!!

I know I missed lots of people, but I have to get back to work. I'll be back if things slow down today.

Vic - :lmao: Forgive me. You just remnded me of a really bad day I had in school. Was cleaning up my room before going to a movie. SOmehow, I broke teh light buldb in my desk lamp. So, put loft ladder up to vaccuum. Teh ladder fell adn hit me in teh head while vacuuming. I said I should stay home to be safe, but stillwanted to go. Had to make a sharp turn to get to teh ATM on teh way. Very icy, steep hill, hit a parked acar. Had to enter very popular bar to find out who's car it was. Oh, it was the singer/guitar player on stage. Great. Yup, your luck and mine sound similar. ;)

Cecelia - Hang in there!! SOunds like they're coming at you frm every angle! :grouphug:

solo - Sorry, that was grumpy sick me who was jealous of anyone who could work out, let alone be outside. I have tosay, though, being an environmental engineer, the best I could do would be to contaminate your drinking water or something. ;) No mechanical devices for me. Plus, I'm lazy. That would be a lot of thinking. :p Glad you made it out!

Mike - :rotfl2: Sorry about the laughter.

Jackie - SOrry, I missed your mile info. Belated congratulations! We do know what these "little victories", as others might say, mean. Way to go!

Well, I did get out fo about a 30 - 40 minute casual walk last night. We walked the boardwalk. It was windy, but great to be out at least. I'm feeling much better today and hope to run 40 to 50 min tonight. There's a chance of rain, but I don't know if that will keep me from being outside. I need to get on my bike path!

The Bingham book sounds great. Ummm.."the penguin"???What's that all about? Does the guy walk a little duck footed? Cause my wonderful Dh does actually havea pronounced penguin-like walk (duck footed) and he's afraid of either embarassing or hurting himself by running. I've tried assuring him that he'll be fine.

Our goal is to enter and finish the race. I don't care if we're last. We'll get healthier while we train, have a HUGE goal to work towards together and score a trip to WDW!! What more could we ask for.

Can anyone recommend a good but inexpensive pedometer so I can accurately track how far I'm running per minute? I don't mind roadwork for training but around here (NC) running on a road is akin to Russian Roulette. The drivers are scary bad.

From my understanding, the Penguin thing has more to do with speed and "shape" that it does with running style. It really just refers to us slower runners and walkers. I would highly recommend picking up his book-- it's loaded with great information and it's incredibly inspirational.

As far as pedometers, you can usually find a good one for about 20 bucks, but a lot of us use the Garmin GPS system which tracks distance, pace, time, etc. (Other companies out there make similar products.) These retail for anywhere from $75-300, depending on the model. If you can somehow find the 201/301 models on clearance, that's a good way to get one inexpensively. The updated 205/305s are considerably more expensive, but do come with some upgrades.

Hope that helps!
Kevin :earsboy:

Krista - lol. I would have thought 80 was a reason to stay in. ;) Way to go on getting out there. I was disaapointed on my last outside run too. I just thought I'd cruise when I got out there. Nope, but it still felt good. The main thing is that there was no IT pain. Yay!

Martha - Way to go on your lunch run! Holy cow you were cruising!! Ugh, I may need to do more TM priograms from you-know-wher to keep up.:scared1:

Good morning folks! I am waiting for my caffeine to kick in this morning - yikes! I went out for my run yesterday - 3.1 mi at an 11:43 min/mi pace. It snowed quite a bit Monday night and yesterday morning, but by the afternoon it had stopped and the sun was out in full force. Made for a nice run.

Some of you guys really amaze me on your paces! Maybe one day I can aspire to be that speedy. Way to go Dave! Good luck on your St. Patrick's Day race.
Martha - Hope your hip continues to feel good. Great run yesterday!
Yay Mel - I'm glad the R/W combo worked for you. Your poor DD though! Hopefully she can find a sunscreen that works.
Andrew - Good luck on your 5K this weekend! Hopefully you have some great weather for it.
Craig - Glad you found some drugs that are helping to make you feel better.
Terri - Good luck in the drawing. I seriously can't believe how quickly that race filled up. I guess there must be a lot of us gals out there clamoring for the Tiffany's necklace you get at the end!
TxAng - Great run and good luck with your mom's move. It sounds like you are making some great progress with your runs.
Yay Jackie on your running for a whole mile!!!
Colleen - I'm sorry to hear your husband may bail on Boston. Fingers crossed for you guys that he still makes it.
Paul - Congratulations to you and your wife! Your daughter is beautiful.
Kristi1357 - Sorry to hear about your 5 miler. Hope your next run is better!
Carrie - Hope you are feeling better.
Kevin and Krista - Good job on getting out there.
Minnie - Good job getting out 2 days in a row!
Cruella de Mom - I hope your leg start to feel better soon.

OK, I think I am caught up from Monday.... Sorry if I missed anyone!

Jim - Thanks for the info, the one I was looking at the full blown one as well. Maximum something or other with gas collection.

Paul - Congrats on the new addition she is beautiful

Jennasis - Welcome to the boards!

I used to do a lot of running on the track. I liked that I could have a good handle on my distance and time. Plus where I was living at the time there really were no good routes to run or sidewalks around the neighbourhood. Take my word for it though - trying to do a six mile on the track is boring! But, for when you do run on the track, be sure to switch directions every once in awhile to even out the stress on both sides of your body. Running on the slight angle of the track in the same direction for an extended period of time can actually cause injury.

That being said, while running on the track is attractive because it is flat, hills are definitely your friends! They help you build strength in your legs to help you get faster.

As for your question about a pedometer, I bought a cheapie from Academy but I have to admit, I've never used it. You have to calibrate it to your stride length, so I was never sure how accurate it was going to be. I just bought a Garmin Forerunner 205 which I LOVE....but it is a fairly expensive investment if you are just starting out. Before I had the Garmin I used to map my routes out using
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/
so I would know how far I went. Or else I looked for maps on the net for trails in my area that gave specific distances for the trails.

I haven't checked out Bingham's book (lots of people here swear by him), but I am a fan of Galloway's plan. He preaches a run/walk philosphy to help make the race easier on your body and build your endurance. You can get quite a bit of info from his website, and his novice training plans seem less advanced than Hal Higdon's. http://www.jeffgalloway.com/

Good luck!!

Hey a fellow NC WISHer! How far are you from Charlotte? That is where I am.
I have to agree that drivers are scary for runners...and bikers.:scared1:

I purchased an Omron HJ-112 at Walmart for $18.99 and it has been EXTREMELY accurate for me. I'm just a walker, so that may be why I can get away with such an inexpensive device, but I really love it. The only thing you need to do is measure your stride. Mine was originally set for a more leisurely pace so when I started walking to train my stride changed a little (shorter but quicker) and I needed to tweak it a bit. Our local Y has an indoor track that I used to help me calibrate it up or down. After just a little trial and error, I've got it so it's completely accurate. If you go to Walmart, they are near the pharmacy section with the diabetic aids. If you don't see them, ask.

Just a quickie here...

I went to FIT Class last night -- a strength training class. My poor little body!! Well, not so little. I also weighed in last night and despite my diet and exercise efforts, I have gained 3 pounds since starting this adventure. I hope it is just female weight that is going to go AWAY soon!!!

I wanted to run after, because it was such a nice day, but I needed to grocery shop for my St. Paddy's Day treat for the kiddos (I teach 2nd grade, and I often forget that they really aren't MY kiddos!).

I am wondering something for all the women in this group. Do you run when it is dark outside? I get so scared, but I live in a nice little town!! I think I am just being a chicken. I want to wake up and run in the morning, but the sun hasn't risen yet at 5:30 or 6:00. I have reflective bands, and would purchase a vest if I thought I would be doing it often, but get so scared. I shouldn't be - I left my garage open for 16 hours the other day and nobody bothered anything! Sometimes, I might also want to run in the evening hours. What do you think?

Anyway, I don't really have time to catch up on here otherwise. It is my short prep time and I need to finish my breakfast!

Happy Hump Day!
Ashley

Ashley--I'm always a little nervous to run by myself after dark too, and I live in a very safe area/neighborhood. I never run when it's completely dark out but I do run when it's dusk and I always bring my dog with me. He would never hurt anybody, but he has a BIG, deep bark and is VERY protective of his momma. Although judging from my picture in my siggy, you would just think he is a big goofball!! Is there someone you can run with, just to be on the safe side?

:car:Hi TEAM, I have to do a drive by this morning because DH wants to go & check out the fishing holes. I think it's alittle too early in the season for that, but what the heck. Anyway, I did 5 miles yesterday on my "summer" walking path and found the conditions still a mess. I opted to use my yaktraks instead of my snow shoes and boy did I regret that. The snow is still deep so I sank alot in spots and snowmobilers have used the path, which caused alot of deep ruts, so I really had to watch my step. It took an hour and a half to get back home, but I was glad I went. Good workout. Ok gang time to find a good fishing spot! Enjoy your day!

Jackie – WOOHOO!!! Congrats on running a mile! :woohoo: I am so happy for you!

Wow, Dave, you are smokin’ those miles! You HAVE to go back to your beginning posts and read those and give yourself a big old thump on the back! And here’s a hug from a WISH friend who is so proud of you!

:welcome: to all our new WISH team members! I have been doing some recruiting on a nutrition and exercise board that I have been frequenting, and am hoping we will have some more race participants and WISH team members joining us soon. The more the merrier, even if I can’t begin to keep up with all the posts anymore! ;)

Not much to report here. I’ve been continuing with TM wogs about 3 times a week. Regardless of how little time and how much stress I have, I try to do the 3.1 and improve that time. After almost a week between TM sessions, I was relieved to clock that in 40:10 Monday night. I have a 5K this weekend and another on 3/25 but just have not had the time or energy to get in the LRs I need to get in for Minnie training. Now that the taxes are turned over to the CPA and some work stuff is calming down a tiny bit, maybe my training will get back on track. :goodvibes: We also just booked a 4 day Wonder cruise for Howard, Jenn and me while Andy is away at performing arts camp this summer. I have seriously been daydreaming about doing morning runs around deck 4. That is now my happy place. I have to find out how long the distance is to run that deck and then I am going to just focus on the pleasure I will have of doing that each morning.

I am hoping to get truly inspired by keeping up with at least reading this thread, even if I can’t keep up with posting to it!

Mel – I hope DD is doing better. How sad that she had that happen when the sunscreen was supposed to protect her!

Congratulations, Paul! Anastasia is gorgeous! :cloud9: I hope you can get some rest now that your family is all home safe and sound!

Christa – I am not surprised that Lucas was lovin’ all over you! I bet he just LOVED having his Aunt Christa spending time with him. Next time you see Bree, please give her a hug for me and tell her her WISH buddies miss her!

Kristi – I hope you are feeling better soon and that your doctor has some answers for you. Those splits are still great, you know! :woohoo:

Oh, forgot to mention ( Kristi you'll love that you made me think of this! :rotfl: ) – I think it is time to schedule an appt with a podiatrist. My right big toe nail is coming back in black and seems to be pushing against the skin that it is ultimately supposed to be covering. ICK!!! And the left big toe nail is white and funky looking. There is also an area around the base of the 2nd nail on both feet that is “bulging” and purplish. Can you say too gross for words? My feet are so hideously ugly that I am actually embarrassed to walk around the house barefoot. I think my dog is even repulsed by them! :lmao:

Colleen – so sorry to hear about DH’s knee pain. I hope he can run pain-free soon, even if not in Boston!

Okay, wanting to congratulate everyone on their great runs forced me to carve time out to post today. I have been missing you all terribly. I am going to continue with the crunches and pushups every day and hope that helps me past this woe-is-me phase I am in about my weight and my shape. And I'll be sure to check in here to get my motivation back for a structured Minnie training schedule!

Nooooo! No! No! Friday night into Saturday....rain turning to snow by morning. GRRRRRR! So much for my plans to get outside for the first time. Grrrr. Maybe the track will be OK. I'll have to see.

This morning I did 10 on the bike then 2 miles on the TM at 4.0 at 2%. I upped the incline a bit. At first it was a little harder then I got used to it.

Kristi - Umm, I don't think those splits were so ugly. :rolleyes1

Carrie - Thanks, it's good to be back. Now, if I could just get work to stop interfering with my DISing...

Jen - See, I want so badly to run outside. I haven't been outside since the Half either. But, well...I'm a baby. I don't want to get my Kayanos wet. I'm still having a love affair with them. :cloud9:

Oh look! There's Kevin! Yay! :yay:

Jennasis - :welcome:

Minnie - Did you go out with your co-workers today? Nothing like people waiting for you to get you going, eh? :thumbsup2

Ohhhhhh! Red Dragon and Calcio are kissing! :love2: I'm telling!!! :rotfl:

Yeah, Martha, that housework plan sounds good in theory...

Jackie - How'd we do today?? ;)

MikeOptimator
- Glad I can keep you amused! I have to say, sometimes I crack myself up!! :lmao: BTW, I'd like to see a picture of you in those shorts please. :rolleyes1

Vic - No more self-induced injuries please. :upsidedow

Krista - Oh I'm so glad you got outside and it went well! YAY!

Cam - :wave2:
