Hello everyone!

For those new to us, we're a group of people who are planning to participate in walking/running events throughout the year. Some of us are training for the 2006 Disneyland Half and for the 2007 WDW Half/Full marathons. We'll also be posting news/training for various other events throughout the year. We range from non-running beginners to triathletes. Come join us, whether you're training for an event or walking/running for fitness!

Hello all:

My name is Robb and this will be my first "Disney Marathon". I am a clinic instructor at the Running Room up here in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada.

My family and I are planning on traveling down a making the most of the Marathon weekend.

I am looking forward to virtually training with all of you.

Cheers

Welcome Robb, as an instructor what exactly do you do? If you are basically a coach you will be asked a lot of questions here on these boards and all will be very nice and attentive to your answers.

I am off to run (with the over 6 inches of rain yesterday and a couple more inches expected today I may be swimming) my very first trail race this morning and am both nervous and excited because I really love running in the dirt. I grew up in farm country in the mountains (this is relative to those who live in actual mountainous areas) of NE PA and we were always running through the woods so I become a child again once I hit the trails. Wish me luck!

Goofyguy- good luck w/ your trail race this am! It sounds more like a muddy buddy race :teeth:

Christa - Glad you had such a good time in HH. That is wonderful that you were able to ride and run daily!

Dave - My SS bike is a mt. bike, but it is fully rigid (no shocks in front or back) I think she still needs a little bit of tweeking, but I did ride her around the block and down and up our big neighborhood hill. It felt really nice. I'm sure I'll be hitting the trails w/ it soon, but it is very unlikely that I would race w/ it.

Amy - Great job on your trail race. Great pace!

Today is the last day of our vacation (although we are at home now) We are going out to run a 9mile trail loop near town. It is a multi use trail that i bike often (i always fall on the bike, but not running!)

Hope everyone has a good week of training! Oh yeah, I'm going to sign phil and i up for the marathon on Monday :-). I'm really glad we have decided to go. I thought we wouldn't b/c he is going to adv. race nationals in so. cal in november but he said he wanted to. I may have to start running to disney just to save (only prb is, idon't run that many miles. Sunny, could i divide the bike miles by 4 and put in a quarter for each of those (unless it is mt. biking and then i get 50centss!)?

:welcome: Robb! I think I recognize you from somewhere, maybe not this board? You've had some great 1/2 times :cool1: What kind of training program do you use?

Mike...good luck with that trail run! Sounds like you'll need a running boots :umbrella:

MelR...Happy belated birthday! :cake: :bday: :cake: Any photos of your new ride?

I saw the pod on Friday. Apparently the alternative to $450 orthotics is weekly taping until my foot heals...yeah...he said EVERY week. So by the time I have 15 visits, I will have paid for the orthotics  If I'd known tape was the answer, I'da just gotten a big roll of duct tape...that stuff fixes everything, right? ;) I'm not an ortho specialist, but I'm pretty sure I can manage the taping myself, if necessary...just don't think I could stand several weeks of tape. So...I went to New Balance yesterday and picked up their ultra arch support insoles ($45)...if they don't work, I may actually consider the custom deal. I'm cautiously optimistic...wore them walking the mall yesterday and felt good. I'm going to try one more week with no running, then I may give it a whirl again.

Have a good week everyone!

Welcome Robb! This is a great virtual training team !

Mike-good luck & have fun getting muddy :laundy:

MelR-that's great you guys get to go!

I did 3 miles this a.m. 14:26 pace incl warmup. Not bad. It's so humid from the rain you could "feel" the air. But better than direct sun :sunny:

Have a great day everyone! Going to the church to decorate the sanctuary & make final preps & make sure everyone has what they need, etc, etc, .....

Well that was the hardest race I have ever run in my life but I loved it. The guy that put it together is a very, very sick man, and the non-stop rain did not help any. At the start of the race the director apologizes for only having 3 climbs in the 15 k and states that he will work on that for next year. Well those 3 climbs were between 3/4 and 1 mile long on very steep mountains with single track rock and root and mud and, did I mention rocks, roots, mud and then rain too. Oh, you get the point. Apparently there were around 400 crazy people running the race and I shockingly came in 108th overall at 1:36 (now on normal races 9.3 miles takes me about 1:08). At the end of the race I had so much mud on my legs that I walked right into the lake and sat down - the problem here is that I had a hard time standing back up. Will I do another trail race you ask. Hows this for an answer, there is another 10 mile trail run at the end of July that I have already signed up for. I am a masocist!

Mike- Great job on the trail run!

Welcome to Robb and welcome back to Wish I lived in FL!

We survived my DD's Disco Dance Party sleepover. They all fell asleep around 1 am. Not too bad. My DD and my mom made a disco ball cake with silver icing and edible glitter. My DH described it as a big grey hamburger, but my DD thought it was the best cake ever.

No exercise for me this weekend. I bought a new gym bag today, and I will return to the gym tomorrow morning to start officially training for DL. I have to travel on Thurs & Fri, but hopefully can fit in some training on the road.

Have a great week everyone!

Wow congrats Mike...you rock :thumbsup2

Welcome Rob, you'll love this site..alot of super people here

I only did 1 mile yesterday and 2.65 miles today. I'm hoping to ride tomorrow, then heading down to Denver on Tues. & Wed. for FIL b-day. See ya on Thursday :wave2:

Hey everybody!! Can you believe that it's almost July? The year is just flying by. I was thinking yesterday, I only have like 8 weeks until I start training for the marathon. I keep going in between being really excited and being really scared!! I did 4 miles yesterday, it was the longest distance I've done since the Flying Pig. I ran it pretty slow and finished in 47:06. Hines did the first 3 miles with me and I did the last one by myself. He was SO tired last night, he just laid around the house, which was great!! I think we're doing 3 miles tomorrow, I need to get back to the Community Center and start cross training and lifting weights again.

Welcome Robb!!

Melissa--Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!! Glad you had a nice vacation, it sounded very relaxing. I'm excited that you and Phil are running Disney next year!!

Christa--I am so jealous that you've been at Hilton Head. Stephen and I have talked about going there next summer, if we can tear ourselves away from WDW. I haven't been to the ocean in 6 years and I'm really having withdrawals. Did I read right that you're running Disney next year too?? :cheer2:

Mel--My dad swears that anything can be fixed with duct tape!!! Guess what, only 74 days until the NFL season kicks off!! :cheer2: :cheer2:

Tiff--I'll be thinking about you this week!! Today was our VBS program at church, it was a Fiesta theme too. I'm thinking it's the same curriculum. I teach 2nd grade girls Sunday school and all my girls were wearing their lime green t-shirts. I was thinking about signing them up for the scream team!!

Rhonda--Still thinking about you. :grouphug:

Heather--The party sounded like fun!! Good luck training this week. I really don't know how you juggle everything.

Ohh, one more thing, remember the sock episode? Guess what, the sock is STILL in the street!!!! Yesterday was the first day I've run in our neighborhood since then, and I couldn't believe that it was still there, especially because we've had some pretty strong rain lately. It's now
black and matted into the street, but it's still there! :joker: :joker:

I ran 10.5 super hilly miles in my wish socks today!!! My teenaged babysitter came into the house, said "hi" to phil and the boy and then looked at me and said "cool socks!" I smiled like a dork and said "oh, really?", but I really wanted to say "yeah, I know" Anyway, we got a good run in. This evening I rode my SS about 6 miles of hills and a mix of pavement and gravel. I wanted to see how i would be able to climb. It felt really good and i was able to do all the hills. it may be time to take her off road.

Good morning everyone! I made it to the gym this morning. :) I did 45 minutes run3/walk2. I took it slow because it had been 3 weeks since I last ran (Yikes!). I bought a lime green New Balance shirt yesterday and wore it this morning in honor of my WISH team buddies. I dedicated my run this morning to Sunny. I know how she is struggling, and I wanted to run for her today. PD to all who are hurting and healing. :wizard:

Judy- How's your cat? Looking a little under the weather yet? :lmao: Make sure your MIL does not watch your babies while you are at WDW!

Off to work :surfweb:

First, thanks to all for the prayers and PD for my father. I was in Austin all this weekend. Thursday I was told that the most recent round of surgery lasted almost 5 hours. My dad was placed in ICU. I was on a plane out there first thing Friday. By Saturday afternoon, he was still in ICU, but that was only because there was not any availability in the intermediate care facility. Yesterday morning, his doctor came in and said that they may even move him to a regular hospital room! :goodvibes . I don't think they would be moving him out of ICU unless he was getting better! Thank you all for the thoughts and prayers. I am now back home, because it appears that he will recover. He's got a long road ahead of him, but things are definitely looking up.

I got back home yesterday in time to do a 7:00 PM 5k that I signed up for a few weeks ago. It is the Cherry Garcia 5k...so you know they have ice cream at the finish line! And PIZZA! I came in under 30:00 for the 5k...not my best time but still ok when you consider I spent most of the afternoon on an airplane!

Welcome to all the new people! We keep growing and growing.

Now I have to catch up on 4 days of posts! Happy training everyone.

Paul

Paul - Glad to hear things are getting better for your dad! I'll keep praying for a quick recovery (or as quick as possible at least)

CHrista - I didn't know you might not do WDW!!! SO glad that's changing!

Mike & AMy - WTG on the trail runs!!

Mel - How's that foot?

MelR - Happy belated birthday!!

Rhonda - Still thinking about you & your family! (((hugs)))

Krista - YUCK!! That's pone ansty sock!

Heather - Way to go for gettign back on track! It's not easy, I know!!!

Sunny - Hoping you're continuing to improve!

Welcome Robb!!!

Glad you're back for another year Wish I lived...!

Thanks fo rall teh undeserved sympathy for my feet. They're pretty ugly at the moment, but they did ok on my run! Whew! Still too hot for me, but I did much better on Saturday! OK, so my optimum running temp is from about 45 to 65 F. Not a great window. :(

Robb - welcome! This is a great group - I think you will like it here.

am off to run (with the over 6 inches of rain yesterday and a couple more inches expected today I may be swimming) my very first trail race this morning and am both nervous and excited because I really love running in the dirt. I grew up in farm country in the mountains (this is relative to those who live in actual mountainous areas) of NE PA and we were always running through the woods so I become a child again once I hit the trails. Wish me luck!

Goofyguy - from my view in IL that sounds beautiful!

MelR - glad to hear you will make it this year. I look forward to meeting everyone.

Mel - I bet you could tape it yourself after you saw the MD do it once or twice. I hope your foot feels better soon.

Please add me to the WISH team. I wore my shirt for the Minnie!

Wished I lived in FL - I am a walker too! A pretty slow one at this point! We can walk together!

Hey everybody!! Can you believe that it's almost July? The year is just flying by. I was thinking yesterday, I only have like 8 weeks until I start training for the marathon. I keep going in between being really excited and being really scared!!

Krista - I agree this year has flown by so far! I have more time before training starts since I am doing the half. I just hope I am back in to action by Sept.

I can't believe we are only 6mo away from WDW! I booked a room today at All Star Movies. Officially it will be ds2, ds4, my mom, and me. My dd15 won't be able to miss that much school. We will be there Thurs-Tues. My bday is that monday so I think I will treat my mom and kids to a dinner at Ohana that night!

I have a babysitter today, and am going to try a SLOW walk on the treadmill at the gym. If it is miserable and aggravates the pain, at least I have physical therapy tonight at 6pm.

I am going to work on being better at keeping up with the posts, I don't want to get to WDW and not know anyone! :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Have a great day!
Maggie :surfweb:

Good morning.

I ran over the weekend. I don't know if it was a big mistake or not, but I just couldn't take it anymore.

Sat, I walked 3 miles and then ran 1.5 with no sign of pain. Sun morning I woke up feeling better than I have in weeks so I went to the Y with DD and did the elliptical.

Then Sun evening, Dx drove DS down to my Mom's and the minute they cleared the house I was out the door. I walked half a mile and then ran 3 straight and then walk/run intervals for a total of 5. Today I woke up with a lot of pain, but no more than usual. I see the neurosurgeon tomorrow, I'm hoping he will tell me what I can and can't do. As much pain as this causes me, there is no pain while running. That makes it all the harder to not run.

It felt soooooo good.

Sunny

First off let me tell you a little back ground on me.

I started running about 2 ½ years ago at the ripe old age of 37. As new father of his 2nd son who was tipping the scales at 202 I felt that it was time for a lifestyle change. Call it an early mid-life crisis

There is a bunch of stores up here in Canada (and a few in the Minneapolis area) called the Running Room. These were started by a man named John Stanton. Much like my self when he started running due a mid-life crisis and was over weight but was a smoker also.

They have “Clinics” which the run approximately every 2-3 month that I joined on that was called “Learn to Run”. This running program is very much like John “The Penguin” Bingham starting at running for one minute and walking for two and then working your way up to running for ten and walking for one.

I set a goal for myself to run a marathon before I turned 40, which I succeeded on doing 15 months ahead of time. Taking my experience I have had thru the clinics I have taken at the Running Room (Learn to Run, 10K, ½ Marathon & Marathon) I decide to pass my experiences on and instruct/coach a clinic.

This winter/spring I coached a group of 55 people to run the Mississauga & Ottawa ½ Marathon in May. All of the team did much better then there goal that they set at the beginning. Some it was there first attempt at the distance others it was the 2nd or 3rd. Coaching a group of people of different abilities and talents was one of the biggest challenges I have had to overcome.

I will gladly assist anyone with my knowledge and expertise.

Currently I am instructing/coaching a group to run a 10K race that will take place mid August. Our runs right now are anywhere from 6K thru to 8K with a max of 13 in a few weeks. Yesterdays run was great, the temp was in the mid 60’s and the sun was out.

For my first tip I will talk about pace. The biggest thing that I learned from training for my first marathon was to find my different training paces. For an example when training for the last half marathon here were my training paces.

Long Run 6:34-7:23 per km or 10:34-11:54 per mile
Steady Run 6:34 per km or 10:34 per mile
Tempo/Hills 5:55 per km or 9:31 per mile
Speed 5:10 per km or 8:19 per mile
Race Pace 5:41 per km or 9:09 per mile
Walk Adj Race Pace 5:27 per km or 8:46 per mile

Determining what your paces are and teaching yourself to run at that pace is in itself a challenge. Personally I found it very hard slowing down to the Long Run pace. But with the assistance of my Garmin it proves to be an invaluable tool.

Cheers

Well, it's official....I am a menace to my own self.

I really hurt my back this weekend. My lower back on the left side. I felt something pop. I think I blew out a muscle. I guess pulled it is the correct term, but it really felt like it blew out. So I didn't do my LW yesterday. However, I did train this morning. It took me so long to put on and tie my shoes! But then once I got going I was OK. Standing up straight isn't the problem. It's doing anything else that hurts like heck.

So I did my usual 45 @ 3.8 @ 1% but no running today.

BTW we started using the dehumidifier in the same room as the TM. NOT a good idea! Whenever the dehumidifier kicks on there is a bit of a power surge and the TM almost stops. Twice I almost went flying! Memo to Honeibee: Turn off dehumidifier before getting on TM.

I started WW on Saturday and lost 4.4 pounds already. I realize the first week is always the best but it sure feels good!

This is probably the dumbest of all stupid questions I ever asked but will my Garmin work in Italy? :confused3 I am assuming so since it is a GLOBAL positioning system, but I thought I'd totally embarrass myself and ask anyway.

Minnie - We had monsoon rains this weekend so I didn't go ride. :guilty: I really want to though, maybe the weekend after next, because in three weeks we are going to Tuscany and we will be riding there.

Anne - "Dr Judy??" :rotfl: Thanks for the Monday morning chuckle! I'm no doctor, I'm just gettin' old, so I know what hurts the creaky old joints and what doesn't.

Christa - YES! :cheer2: Please please please register!

Robb - :welcome: Glad you found us!

Mel - Oh I hope the insoles work for you!! pixiedust:

Mike - OMG what a race! You did fabulous! :thumbsup2 You masochist you! :teeth:

Heather - "A great big grey hamburger"......What a visual! I'm sure it was really neat! My cat is just fine today, thank you for asking. She's perfectly healthy and was purring away when I left the house this morning. :cat: No sign of an impending burial. Please. I wouldn't dare let her take care of any of my babies. Don't get me going on my MIL. Soon I will have to spend ten days with her. TEN days. TEN DAYS! Lord, please hold my hands so I don't end up choking this woman. :furious:

Krista - You crack me up with the Sock Saga! :lmao:

Melissa - Wow, you ran ten miles... :worship: ..I'll never be able to keep up with you guys....

Paul - Oh I'm so glad to hear this about your dad. That's great. :goodvibes Cherry Garcia, hu? Do they have a Chunky Monkey 'cause I'd sign up for that one!

Carrie - I'm glad to hear your feet did OK on the run. :yay:

Maggie - Can you tell me how you get multiple quotes in a reply? :confused3

Sunny - Oh my goodness! I'm sooo happy for you, but cautiously so. :goodvibes I know what it means to you to get moving. BTW I read your treadmill Nirvana post for the first time and really enjoyed it. I started WW this weekend and thought of what you said about recording EVERY bite! So, I did. :woohoo:
